rofl I love these kinds of documentaries...so retro...and informative...not like the brute force "look at us we're so cool and badass" modern ones...fuckin hate it
@Judyiack There's only a few left, they're quickly going away. As the Prowler has been phased out in most carrier groups, the multi-purpose 'Bug' has taken its role as an EA-18 "Growler".
Replacing this fighter with the Super Hornet was the biggest mistake they made. The Super Hornet doesn't have the speed and range required to defend the battle group and the carrier. It simply can't perform its main duty of protecting the carrier. The Super Tomcat variants that were proposed should've been today the Navy's fighters, not the F-18s. In fact, all F-18s should've been retired and replaced with one or the two variants of the Super Tomcat. Quick Strike or Super Tomcat 21 would've been
the ideal choice. They had bigger range than the F-14D, bigger weapons payload, better engines and they also would've had outstanding ground attack capabilities. The Super Tomcat 21 would've also incorporated 3D TVC and supercruise capability. Replacing the F-14 with the F-18 was the biggest mistake they made.
@onblock7 The problem is that there it seems like there's nobody that tells these kind of things to the politicians that take the decisions regarding weapons procurement.
The start of this show is pure awesome. This was the zenith of American naval power. The variety of potent aircraft on the ships in the 1980s was the reason for this. While ,more advanced in electronics, an all Hornet flight deck will lack the ordnance delivery punch of its 1980s counterpart. Back then the Navy could take names and prosecute action anywhere anytime.
Yes, it was one of the most beautiful American aircraft of the Jet Age, but to all things there is a time. The F-9, F-104, F-4, A-4, A-7. Beautiful aircraft all, but the world changed around them.
I myself mourned the passing of the HH-3f in exchange for the HH-60J. I consider the Jayhawk to be an inferior aircraft, but the truth is the H-3 was underpowered and very, very old. (But, the H-3 didn't make me airsick. The H-60 did)
@barkon Not only was the Tomcat beautiful, but it could out-run, out-gun, and take a hit. The pilots would often not even have to eject until after they got hit by a missile because the Tomcat would stay together to enough of a point that you could get out safely.
the f-14 visual proportions made it having a more beautiful look than all curent aircraft. it fitted the role of the good guys aricraft, with the su-27 fitting the role of the evil DR zorgs aircraft, because of it more menacing look. they were great for manga comics.
@TheBearcat222 huh?are you a fucking turkish english teacher? i am talking about planes. this is not place for a proper english asshole like you.Go drink your tea elsewhere, tweed coat pussy. And stuff an english raisin muffin up your gay proper-english ass.
Hahaha check out the cheesy music that kicks in at 02:21 - It has to be the most uncool music ever created - the kind of stuff you'd expect to hear in an Albanian disco.
f14 had so much potental for modernization. the perposed super tomcat would have been a MUCH better choice rather than the super hornet. its a shame that personal greed and goverment stupidity infest or nation as it does others.
I think this airframe was prematurely retired; it was the only Mach 2+ capable plane in Navy service, and it could have had a future in other roles besides fleet defense. Unfortunately, Iran has proven determined and resourceful in acquiring parts for their old American hardware (it's still the best they have); so remaining examples had to be shredded instead of being retired to the bone-yard.
Like jets? Sign up now to protect Dick Cheney's freedoms in Afghanistan! You are an army of one, especially when you git wounded and then have to battle the VA all by yerself to get treatment. Hoo-aahh!
If you want to by a real fighter you can go and buy an f-5 for about $3 000 000 from a company called pride aircraft. The US Navy still uses them for ACM training. Can show up and fly away with it. You can also get a Ukrainian SU-27 from a company in Illonnis(sp?) for around $5 000 000 Less than 20hours on the airframes/engines since complete rebuild. Can track down Mig-29s and a few other fighters just google warbirds or the name of the fighter you want plus type for sale plenty around
Ive seen this video as a kid, thanks for sharing! Love these 80s aviation docs and their soundtracks, brings back memories. They're a part of the reason i pursued a carreer in aviation. Best decision i ever made.
At the end of its service an F-14 costed 38 MILLION dollars first you need a lot of money, second training the FAA wont let just anyone fly a fighter jet, and the light chance you could buy one of the few special and rare tomcats left
lol my problem is getting the money, its easy to locate and buy anything you want if the funds are available. i can even locate a carrier for you if the price is right (finders fee) ofcourse!
since i doubt your qualified to operate a multi jet engine aircraft (100,000 budget)
i would not waste my resources on such a request but if you want a multi crew military trainer aircraft for $99,900 heres your chance to get a 1941 NAVY N3N-3 with 650hrs Since Complete Restoration in 1994, Lycoming R680 rated at 300 hp my(finders fee) will be announced if you truly wish to persue your interest. i have the owners contact info as well.
Not possible. Other than the Iranian squadrons, there are few F-14s left! Last time I was at AMARC, they said there were only 16 that had not been.....recycled.
Thanks to the Iranian crazies, even parts are sequestered.
Not quite, F-14 died in 1994 when congress refused to upgrade it beyond F-14D (effectively Super Tomcat) after they had been duped into accepting the F/A-18E (super hornet) that was less of an upgrade but a complete re-design.
Post Cold War, there was not enough budget to support 2 jets of such similar performance, so it was all-in for the more recent Super Hornet.
F-14 wasn't retired till 2005, 26 years after Iran went hostile but long enough for the Jet to go beyond it's useful service life.
I agree with most of Treblaine. But the Rhino cannot come close, in speed, carrying capacity or range to the F-14. The 14 was retired in 2006 because, beyond gross Navy shortsightedness, of maintenance issues. Cheney cancelled the D which solved the A's early engine and electronics issues. It was a sad loss for the Navy
It does make you wonder, now the Cold war is over and the War on Terror is in full swing, is the Tomcat's role as a massive missile launching platform outdated?
It is becoming more and more about close air support, precision strikes at ground targets. I wonder if the F/A18 that replaced the Tomcat is more manoeuvrable at low altitude or otherwise fundamentally more suited.
Tomcat was perfect for defence from Soviet Nuclear Bombers, but for Air Supremacy the F/A 18 might be better.
Both have their respective strengths. The F-18 has more modern avionics to be sure, but the 14 has proven marvelously adept at ground attack via its own Lantirn configuration. In some ways is is even superior to the 15-E. But most telling in Afghanistan, the 18 can't reach the battle without multiple refuelings. The 14 can, while hauling more ordinance.
@CRsBeem Avionics are easy to change and upgrade nowadays. What's important is the design, structure, and airframe...the F-14 was a winner in every aspect, ESPECIALLY range and speed...this thing could fly out way ahead of the carrier group, kill whatever it had to, and return home.
The F-18 is a jack of all trades; it's a support aircraft. It needs a high-end performer to clear the way for it to operate, and that was the F-14 for awhile...
@CRsBeem I'm sure they could've given the F-14 state of the art avionics and glass cockpit if they wanted to, and even given it a stealthier airframe; there were already plans and offers by Grumman to do so, but the navy refused in favor of the jack of all trades.
Big mistake.
An iconic aircraft, the US navy's prize fighter, was done forever.

configure another with LANTIRN surveilance packs and it can direct ground attacks.
