  • As i child i used to have a picture of the a VF-1 tomcat on my wall... 15 years down the line i still do.

  • rofl I love these kinds of documentaries...so retro...and informative...not like the brute force "look at us we're so cool and badass" modern ones...fuckin hate it

    love the old America

  • F-14 Tomcat and F-15 Rules the World! :D:D:D

  • 9:27 that guy's like, "hurry up; park that shit. A storm is coming"

  • Does the Navy still fly any version of the A-6 Prowler? Just curious.

  • @Judyiack There's only a few left, they're quickly going away. As the Prowler has been phased out in most carrier groups, the multi-purpose 'Bug' has taken its role as an EA-18 "Growler".

  • i love F 14 TOMCAT what a beauty

  • Does anyone know where to download this music?! I love 2:00+

  • Replacing this fighter with the Super Hornet was the biggest mistake they made. The Super Hornet doesn't have the speed and range required to defend the battle group and the carrier. It simply can't perform its main duty of protecting the carrier. The Super Tomcat variants that were proposed should've been today the Navy's fighters, not the F-18s. In fact, all F-18s should've been retired and replaced with one or the two variants of the Super Tomcat. Quick Strike or Super Tomcat 21 would've been

  • the ideal choice. They had bigger range than the F-14D, bigger weapons payload, better engines and they also would've had outstanding ground attack capabilities. The Super Tomcat 21 would've also incorporated 3D TVC and supercruise capability. Replacing the F-14 with the F-18 was the biggest mistake they made.

  • @StiviGun1 I agree fully!

  • @onblock7 The problem is that there it seems like there's nobody that tells these kind of things to the politicians that take the decisions regarding weapons procurement.

  • @StiviGun1 I think you hit it right on the head there.

  • @onblock7 Well, too bad that people who really count don't do this. :)

  • Why dont they bring this aircraft Back !!! damn it

  • I love that theme song.

  • Very upload !

  • Thank you for such great uploading. What year was this produced?

  • MAN THIS JET ALWAYS TAKE MY BREATH AWAY!!!!

  • CVN-65 Big-E. West-Pac 76-77 V.A.W.-113 Represented.

    Vf-1 & 2 N.A.S. Miramar "Fighter Town U.S.A." Well, used to be.

  • I miss shows like this

  • The start of this show is pure awesome. This was the zenith of American naval power. The variety of potent aircraft on the ships in the 1980s was the reason for this. While ,more advanced in electronics, an all Hornet flight deck will lack the ordnance delivery punch of its 1980s counterpart. Back then the Navy could take names and prosecute action anywhere anytime.

  • I miss wings!

  • Yes, it was one of the most beautiful American aircraft of the Jet Age, but to all things there is a time. The F-9, F-104, F-4, A-4, A-7. Beautiful aircraft all, but the world changed around them.

I myself mourned the passing of the HH-3f in exchange for the HH-60J. I consider the Jayhawk to be an inferior aircraft, but the truth is the H-3 was underpowered and very, very old. (But, the H-3 didn't make me airsick. The H-60 did)

  • @barkon Not only was the Tomcat beautiful, but it could out-run, out-gun, and take a hit. The pilots would often not even have to eject until after they got hit by a missile because the Tomcat would stay together to enough of a point that you could get out safely.

    F-14D FTW!!!

  • but you have the A-10,f-22, f/a-18, F-16---Air superiority.

  • All I wanna know is, where can I buy the soundtrack?

  • 2:24 monkey clap.

  • the f-14 visual proportions made it having a more beautiful look than all curent aircraft. it fitted the role of the good guys aricraft, with the su-27 fitting the role of the evil DR zorgs aircraft, because of it more menacing look. they were great for manga comics.

  • @jeetendrag10acc2 "Made it having"????? Are you retarded, or Turkish, or what?

  • @TheBearcat222 huh?are you a fucking turkish english teacher? i am talking about planes. this is not place for a proper english asshole like you.Go drink your tea elsewhere, tweed coat pussy. And stuff an english raisin muffin up your gay proper-english ass.

  • I miss WINGS!!!

  • Hahaha check out the cheesy music that kicks in at 02:21 - It has to be the most uncool music ever created - the kind of stuff you'd expect to hear in an Albanian disco.

  • f14 had so much potental for modernization. the perposed super tomcat would have been a MUCH better choice rather than the super hornet. its a shame that personal greed and goverment stupidity infest or nation as it does others.

  • LOVE this plane.....this plane is to one generation what the P-51 was to another generation

  • This music is totally, epically awesome. I need to find it in an MP3 format.

Great show. Awesome aircraft. I wish there were a few left to fly!

  • @Jim21680 The music in these older military plane docs is always awesome.

  • I think this airframe was prematurely retired; it was the only Mach 2+ capable plane in Navy service, and it could have had a future in other roles besides fleet defense. Unfortunately, Iran has proven determined and resourceful in acquiring parts for their old American hardware (it's still the best they have); so remaining examples had to be shredded instead of being retired to the bone-yard.

  • Yeah oldschool Discover Channel!

  • I really miss this program

  • everytime I the song at the beginning it gives me nostalgia, I miss this program, I really thank you for posting this video

  • Wow when did this first air? Classic discovery channel. Mabey in the late 80s?

  • i use to love this show when i was a little boy.

  • The Iranian F-14s have not been airworthy for a very long time.

  • Like jets? Sign up now to protect Dick Cheney's freedoms in Afghanistan! You are an army of one, especially when you git wounded and then have to battle the VA all by yerself to get treatment. Hoo-aahh!

  • If you want to by a real fighter you can go and buy an f-5 for about $3 000 000 from a company called pride aircraft. The US Navy still uses them for ACM training. Can show up and fly away with it. You can also get a Ukrainian SU-27 from a company in Illonnis(sp?) for around $5 000 000 Less than 20hours on the airframes/engines since complete rebuild. Can track down Mig-29s and a few other fighters just google warbirds or the name of the fighter you want plus type for sale plenty around

  • Ive seen this video as a kid, thanks for sharing! Love these 80s aviation docs and their soundtracks, brings back memories. They're a part of the reason i pursued a carreer in aviation. Best decision i ever made.

  • crap music, i wish they were as informative as with the soviet aircrafts.

  • Thanks for sharing (Y)

  • I got much money and i don't know what to do with it. But now i already decided! I will buy jet fighters.

Where can I buy one of these?

  • you might consider to buy more beer, so it would feel like you can buy an aircraftcarrier instead ;-)

  • i don't need to buy it, i produce it massively.. ;)

  • At the end of its service an F-14 costed 38 MILLION dollars first you need a lot of money, second training the FAA wont let just anyone fly a fighter jet, and the light chance you could buy one of the few special and rare tomcats left

  • it was also very large you could fit 80 f18s where you would normally only be able to fit 40 f14

  • can you lend me £20 please?

  • lol my problem is getting the money, its easy to locate and buy anything you want if the funds are available. i can even locate a carrier for you if the price is right (finders fee) ofcourse!

  • 100000$ is enough for you the get me a fully operation F-14? ...without weapons... i want it, to be a private recreational aircraft...

  • since i doubt your qualified to operate a multi jet engine aircraft (100,000 budget)

i would not waste my resources on such a request but if you want a multi crew military trainer aircraft for $99,900 heres your chance to get a 1941 NAVY N3N-3 with 650hrs Since Complete Restoration in 1994, Lycoming R680 rated at 300 hp my(finders fee) will be announced if you truly wish to persue your interest. i have the owners contact info as well.

  • 100000$ was my bid for your fee... anyway i don't fucking care about your doubts, i want a jet.

But thanks anyway, i'm searching in other places..

  • Comment removed

  • i'm thinking about it...

  • $100k? why, just sell them to the philippine government. two tomcats with standard radars can cover our whole country.

configure one for ground support, and the tomcat may finish off insurgents.

configure another with LANTIRN surveilance packs and it can direct ground attacks.

  • Not possible. Other than the Iranian squadrons, there are few F-14s left! Last time I was at AMARC, they said there were only 16 that had not been.....recycled.

Thanks to the Iranian crazies, even parts are sequestered.

  • i love the f-14 wings... they can swing back.. lol. cool

  • I believe these planes were retired to cut off any chance of Iran getting any parts for theirs.

Iran still has them in service in some capacity.

  • Not quite, F-14 died in 1994 when congress refused to upgrade it beyond F-14D (effectively Super Tomcat) after they had been duped into accepting the F/A-18E (super hornet) that was less of an upgrade but a complete re-design.

Post Cold War, there was not enough budget to support 2 jets of such similar performance, so it was all-in for the more recent Super Hornet.

F-14 wasn't retired till 2005, 26 years after Iran went hostile but long enough for the Jet to go beyond it's useful service life.

  • I agree with most of Treblaine. But the Rhino cannot come close, in speed, carrying capacity or range to the F-14. The 14 was retired in 2006 because, beyond gross Navy shortsightedness, of maintenance issues. Cheney cancelled the D which solved the A's early engine and electronics issues. It was a sad loss for the Navy

  • It does make you wonder, now the Cold war is over and the War on Terror is in full swing, is the Tomcat's role as a massive missile launching platform outdated?

It is becoming more and more about close air support, precision strikes at ground targets. I wonder if the F/A18 that replaced the Tomcat is more manoeuvrable at low altitude or otherwise fundamentally more suited.

Tomcat was perfect for defence from Soviet Nuclear Bombers, but for Air Supremacy the F/A 18 might be better.

  • Both have their respective strengths. The F-18 has more modern avionics to be sure, but the 14 has proven marvelously adept at ground attack via its own Lantirn configuration. In some ways is is even superior to the 15-E. But most telling in Afghanistan, the 18 can't reach the battle without multiple refuelings. The 14 can, while hauling more ordinance.

  • @CRsBeem Avionics are easy to change and upgrade nowadays. What's important is the design, structure, and airframe...the F-14 was a winner in every aspect, ESPECIALLY range and speed...this thing could fly out way ahead of the carrier group, kill whatever it had to, and return home.

The F-18 is a jack of all trades; it's a support aircraft. It needs a high-end performer to clear the way for it to operate, and that was the F-14 for awhile...

  • @Spjungen Agreed, brother.

  • @CRsBeem I'm sure they could've given the F-14 state of the art avionics and glass cockpit if they wanted to, and even given it a stealthier airframe; there were already plans and offers by Grumman to do so, but the navy refused in favor of the jack of all trades.

    Big mistake.

An iconic aircraft, the US navy's prize fighter, was done forever.

  • gorgeous old girl...so sad that its gone

  • jus love that "fantastic" beat, 04.19-.423ish!! and the beat before that bit.wow 1980s! and the F14!

  • i'm going to miss the F-14, it's hard to believe that this magnificent aircraft isn't in service anymore.

  • yep they still use them every day tho "in service" seems to mean "priority"

  • @ThunderHenshin32 but 40 of them still fly in iran even if there flying our jets and they hate us but the jet still flys in another part of the world at least the appriciate it enough not to retire such a powerfull machine like the tomcat is check out iranian f14 hot new clip

  • @KEEPitGREEN4201 i agree but i doubt most of them are used by Iran. .in my opinion I'll seeing the F-14 on airshow rather than in combat in other parts of the world. Peace out.:p

  • @ThunderHenshin32 NOT MOST OF THEM ON 40 OF THEM FLY AND THERE A MODELS BUT I GUESS UR RIGHT BECAUSE THE TOMCAT IS MAERICAN NOT IRANIAN ..1 LOVE

  • I LOVE THE F-14

  • Bullshit decision from the pentagon, That sucks

  • @ThunderHenshin32 But it is still in use in Iran.

  • Very true! If one actually studies the design carefully it becomes obvious how ahead of it's time the tomcat is.

  • T'was a sad day that a great, aesthetic aircraft, symbol of America was set to be destroyed in 2006, thanks to Mr. V.P.'s endorsement of the f-18 Super Hornet project , and subsequent fear of Iran. BTW, I loved wings. This episode dedicated to my favorite aircraft, plus the one called future wings. This music is quite retroactively awesome.

  • Very true.

  • The F-14 Retirement was a bulllshit decision of the pentagon, fuck them
