love this guy on full boil. He's just a machine. I dont normally like thrashy superfast metal, but combined with devy's superthick sound & amazing arrangements, hoglan is just a perfect match and the result is balls to the wall greatness.
I got to know what song they were playing at the VERY beginning. If anyone says it's "Oh My Fucking God", you're wrong. I mean before that. I need to know what plays at the very first seconds of the video.
I was at this show! My first time seeing SYL and it was a life changing experience indeed! \m/ Little did I realize that I would meet them years later and have the opportunity to perform on and have my name in their final album.
@hlandry9 tnx very much. that´s right. he is really a beast of a drummer. what i hate most is when people without playing any instrument on their own dare to say shit about any other musicians or artists( not here on this page). many ppl are so ignorant and stupid and say the best drummer in the world is the drummer of their favourite band. for my opinion i think, no high-level metal band can allow to have bad musicians in their rows. tnx again for explaining fin machine. greets from vienna

gene has timing and excellent neuro-wiring to allow the fastest thought to action response time. add in natural musical ability, experience and loads of practice.
They made a first version of far beyond metal years ago (before 2000) but they re-recorded it for the new black album in 2006 and made some changes. hope that clears the confusion up people.
One thing I don't get. "The new black" was released in 2006 and the title of this video says that this souncheck was in 2000. So did they write and practise "Far beyond metal" way before they ever released it or was this soundcheck done later than 2006?
@ellioman The recording of Far Beyond Metal you'll have heard on The New Black is not the original. Far Beyond Metal is track 7 on No Sleep 'till Bedtime from 1997, they then re-recorded it (as well as changing it around somewhat) on The New Black.
Give the original a listen, it's a damn fine song.
@THEREV468 A big show off you serious. You obviously dont know who he is. He is the neil peart of metal drumming. fuck the rev he sucked and mike portnoy is good but anything just shows off having to kits put together. Learn to get out of this "era" of musicians and learn the musicians that really matter
A question to you drummers: Is there a real reason for him hitting a cymbal with a horizontal motion or is it just for show? Because I have only seen drummers do it vertically, as does he in some parts of this video.
@funney61303349 not really,if it was easy more drummers would do it but a tiny percentage of drummers can have the speed and power on all 4 limbs like him
I think they liked to play it only live, as a tribute to Metal reserved to a consistent audience.
Devin must have had felt SYL would be dismissed even before The New Black was recorded, so I think we can see the song as recorded only years later because they were not sure they could record it later on.
I saw them in 1997 on Testament's Demonic tour, back when no one (including me) knew who they were. I just knew Gene Hoglan was drumming, I was afraid they were going to be a lame punk band judging by the name, god was I wrong. They were a dfferent animal back when CITY came out, INTENSE. I'm trying to think if they played Far Beyond Metal, maybe.
I'm thinking the same thing. Might be one of those songs that they had "lying around" but never did anything with 'til The New Black was being written. I think Dev was just about "over it" with SYL at that point, based on his interviews since, so maybe they pulled FBM out as one of the songs in lieu of writing a new one. Great song regardless.
