They made a first version of far beyond metal years ago (before 2000) but they re-recorded it for the new black album in 2006 and made some changes. hope that clears the confusion up people.

@ellioman The recording of Far Beyond Metal you'll have heard on The New Black is not the original. Far Beyond Metal is track 7 on No Sleep 'till Bedtime from 1997, they then re-recorded it (as well as changing it around somewhat) on The New Black.

Give the original a listen, it's a damn fine song.

I think they liked to play it only live, as a tribute to Metal reserved to a consistent audience.

Devin must have had felt SYL would be dismissed even before The New Black was recorded, so I think we can see the song as recorded only years later because they were not sure they could record it later on.

I'm thinking the same thing. Might be one of those songs that they had "lying around" but never did anything with 'til The New Black was being written. I think Dev was just about "over it" with SYL at that point, based on his interviews since, so maybe they pulled FBM out as one of the songs in lieu of writing a new one. Great song regardless.
