We've been voted Best UK Airport by ‘Which? Travel’ members, in the large airports category. This is great news for us & all of you that travel using our airport. Read the full article here >>>
I think Britain will follow suit, currently Heathrow is a mess and BA isnt investing anywhere near enough or ambitiously in wide bodies.
However when London Gateway Airport which will 6-8 runways and capacity for 200 million pax is built I think BA will order a lot more A380s and compete with the world players such as Atlanta, Chicago and Dubai.
Frankfurt, Paris and Amsterdam will be left behind however theyll probably keep adding new runways to compete.
By that time EK would have taken passengers away from airports such as London, Frankfurt and Paris. Its simple math, an airline who will have 387 aircrafts (EK) with unlimited money.
BA, LH & AF (168, 135, 128 aircrafts CANNOT compete with EK 10-15 years down the line. European airports will get smaller and DXB will be hugeee because of EK. its simple!
very good point however I would count EKs chickens before they hatch, Lufthansa is going to every effort to not allow EK to take over, and dont forget Qatar and Etihad as 2 huge competitors. IF and thats a big IF Gateways opens it will certainly give both Daxing and Maktoum a run for their money.
However I AM pretty sure Gateway will one day happen as the UK cant sustain its rather mediocre airports system Heathrow is a bit of an embarrasment IMO
@steven8hamilton I work for QR. One thing u have to understand is Etihad and EK are from the same country. Its not like other countries where both airlines are different companies. EK and Etihad are essentially run by the same line of family of Sheikh's. When Etihad's orders are met, they'll have 127 "Heavy's". EK with 387. That's a total of 514 "Heavy Aircrafts". EK and Etihad can both afford to keep prices lower than any US or European carriers because of low oil prices for them and A380's.
@steven8hamilton BA will only have 168 "heavy aircrafts" when their orders are met. 135 for lh and 128 for af. All 3 of these carriers does not have money to purchase more aircrafts like EK, QR & EY. How do you suppose BA, LH or AF is going to compete with the "UAE" aircrafts with a fleet of 514 aircrafts with 168, 135 and 128? THEY CAN'T! The fact is in 10 years time, EK will have a monopoly on intl traffic. BA, LH & AF will have a hard time filling their aircrafts = bankruptcy!
I also find it rather sad that the Gulf has this secret ambition to kill off all other airlines I was rather upset the other day to see some Arab say he was looking forward to seeing AA, BA and UA collapse and EK be the worlds ONLY airline, I mean come on its not gonna happen. People wont let it happen, the Emirates are going bankrupt anyway and EK and QR are state subzidised whilst BA, KL and UA are NOT subsidized. It wont happen EK will NOT be as powerful as the Arabs wish for
@steven8hamilton Lets say Gateway does open. When Emirates start taking passengers away from other airlines because of the size of their fleet and low prices, the traffic of Emirates if going to go through Dubai not London. That means you will start to see the traffic of London decline. Daxing will continue to do good because most of their traffic will be domestic. Trust me on this, I've studied aviation and airports for a very long time!
well that is a huge possibility however I am sceptical about EK and its 'huge growth'. Sure itll be huge however I doubt London's traffic will be anywhere near as badly affected as Frankfurt or Amsterdam. London is mainly OandD traffic so with Gateway we will be able to expand our destination network. EK is mainly after transfers which is LH and KL markets, BA to an extend but not as much. However BA, KL, AF and LH will not allow EK to kill them off, remembers that!
@steven8hamilton BA 168, LH 135 & AF 128 aircrafts is WHEN their orders are met, not right now. Right now, its even less than those numbers. AF & KLM has no money. BA and LH is barely holding on. Both their ceo's have said they had net losses. I agree Frankfurt, Paris & Amsterdam will be hit harder than London. I'm not saying these airports are just going to disappear from the map. London will still be in the top 5 after Dubai, Daxing, Beijing etc.
@steven8hamilton The middle east carriers are offering a much finer product than the europeans (qatar-5 star airline, EK-best IFE, Etihad-best premium seat etc) One thing you have to understand is, it doesn't matter if airports in europe is building bigger airports, larger terminals, more runways etc. At the end of the day, you need PASSENGERS to come through that airport to make it busy, right?
@steven8hamilton How do you suppose that's going to happen is EK, QR & EY is taking all the passengers that would typically fly through europe, instead bringing them through dubai, doha or abu dhabi? Its the passengers that dictate how busy an airport gets. A large airline like EK can dictate the passengers because of the size of their fleet, product and cheap prices. The future of international air travel WILL be through the middle east, like it or not.
well you know neither of us could be rights, for all we know Ryanair might become the world's largest airline and Dublin will become the world hub???
we can only tell in 10-20 years how much the worlds aviation scene has changed.
Having flown with both EK and QR I was very satisfied with the product and wish them well in the future, they will undoubtedly be a several places higher on the 'worlds largest airlines' list in a few years
@steven8hamilton Oh and I was born in India, Grew up in the US, and fly for Qatar. So I kind of look at this from a global perspective. I've talked to plenty of other pilots about this and they agree. So i guess we'll see what happens 10-15 years down the line. =)
Ive spoken to my uncle about these things who is now of course retired (50s) and flew for Dan Air and BA and my grandfather (80s), I am in my 20s at the moment but both of them have flown for BOAC and later BA, they both live in Manchester and both enjoy watching the 2 daily A380 EK flights coming in :D
btw is their rivalry and competition between Qatar and the Emirates??? after all they are both after the same markets
@steven8hamilton I think there's a rivalry for sure. Not so much between EK and Etihad because (same country, same family etc) Qatar is supposed to have 193 "heavy's when their orders are met which will be even bigger than BA's. Not to mention the new Doha airport will have capacity of 93 million. I've seen the products of the major european carriers and I would say its nowhere near the product the middle eastern carriers offer. (and at a smaller price too that is)
I have noticed ME carriers are always more expensive, KL is always the cheapest for me, and as for quality most people I know dont care about quality and awards they only care about who can get them fro X to Y the cheapest which is currently how not very remarkable airlines like KL and LH succeed so much and heck even Ryanair.
I think EK, QR and EY focus too much on quality and less on price, TBH nobody I know cares about who has 5 stars or not only how ££££ it will cost
@steven8hamilton I don't know about Europe but from the US to ME or South Asia or other way around, I've noticed ME carriers are consistently cheaper. I don't have to worry because I get to fly for free. A short trip might not matter but when you're sitting on an aircraft for 13-15 hours, trust me, a 5 star airline matter. I've flown KLM & LH in the past on long haul routes and felt that QR was a much finer product in every aspect. Big reason why I wanted to work for them.
@steven8hamilton One other thing I wanted to say is (being a south asian myself), (true story) one thing that's consistent is that when travelling internationally the asian/me community will almost 100% of the time chose a ME carrier or sometimes an asian carrier. I've rarely heard of them flying an American carrier or a European carrier. Even though AA or Delta in some cases are cheaper, they still take ME carriers for their service. just something i noticed.
@steven8hamilton I can't post the link on here because for some reason youtube won't let me but on bbc it shows that for BA (the flag carrier lost E531million in the 12 months to march. That adds to the E401million lost in the 2009 financial year. BBC also shows for EK The dubai based airline made a net profit of 5.4billion dirhams (1.5billion dollars in the year to march. Passengers were up 15%
OH btw your info on Doha Airport, the new airport will still be smaller than Heathrow with 2 runways and capacity for 93 Million, even Heathrow has capacity for 98 million and Gateway for 200 million.
You also forgot to add that Dubai lost ALOT of money in recession, and is falling with Abu Dhabi paying its bills, but when the oil runs out........screwed
@steven8hamilton You won't let go of this "Gateway" thing, will you? loll. Gateway is not even a real airport, its just an idea! Atleast Al Maktoum & Doha is being built. Daxing has been approved. You can't talk about an airport that doesn't even exist. Atleast wait till the government has approved it which it hasn't. BA did have profit in 2011 but were at a loss until march 2011 & for years before that. Once in a while, they do have profitable years.
@steven8hamilton EK and QR, I believe never had a loss in a year in recent times. At some point, losses for months but never for a year. Ryan Air should never even enter this conversation. They don't really have an intl presence. Just Europe with whole bunch of 737's similar to southwest airlines. Dubai might have lost money, but its not affecting the airline. Its growing faster than ever. EK is getting a new aircraft EVERY MONTH!
@steven8hamilton You talk like Abu Dhabi is a different country, Its still the UAE, same country, just a different city run by the same Maktoum Family of Sheikh's. Oil might be running out in the world, but you talk like oil will run out next week or next month..they have oil for the next 100 years.
@steven8hamilton Qatar just won Airline of the year, Best Business Class, Best Lounge etc. Emirates is always best IFE, great First and Business Classes etc. IMO Qatar along with SQ is the world's best airline's. Emirates is a definite top 5 in my opinion. It would be interesting to see how those 2 rivalries play out in the long run along with Etihad who just won best first class seat & a great business class for sure. that's why i said the future of intl travel is thru mid east
(Part 3) P.S. by "Heavy Aircrafts" I mean, Aircrafts that can typically fly internationally. From Airbus - A330 or larger. From Boeing - 747, 757, 767, 777, 787. Truly a mind blowing strategy from Emirates Airline!
(Part 1) By the year 2020-2025, the way they have placed themselves, they will be able to completely control the international market. They will take routes away from BA, LH & AF forcing all 3 carriers to shrink in profit and therefore reduce their fleet making Emirates even stronger once again! 1 more thing is that airports such as London Heathrow has already hit its max and cannot expand any further. Al Maktoum has a capacity of 160 million and can even expand even further if needed.
(Part 1) Emirates' airline's strategy is simply amazing. When their current airline orders are complete and in service, they will have a fleet of "387 Heavy's". In comparison, the 3 largest European carriers (British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France) will have a "Heavy Fleet" of 168, 135, 128 aircrafts when their orders are met. That's 219 more aircrafts than BA & not to mention, they will be using heavy volume aircrafts such as the a380.
@shadowromeo22 Notice that this is the only international airport in their country. The USA has more than a dozen international airport so not really an entirely equal comparison.
@iAmlyplyp yeah but that's enough for the size of dubai...our smallest state probably has a bigger budget anyways so we have the means of creating more innovative structures but we don't because most of the money is mal-used

you forget that BA, KL, LH and AF keep ordering aircraft as well, yes not as crazily as EK or QR but none the less they are slowly growing.
Paris CDG is already larger than the new DXB airport in size anyway
Heathrow is a dump but IF Gateway happens thats a new 8 runway competior, 3 runways MORE than DXB
Frankfurt and Munich are adding new runways
AND you forget than BA now owns IB and is buying BMI so it is growing as well as AF with KL and LH buying Swiss and Austrian
LH is 2 times EK
