Eddy Merckx 77 Glenryck cup Eastway(part4)

Just found this so thanks! I used to race at Eastway and was there that day (I think I still have the programme somewhere!). It was such a thrill to see the great Eddy Merckx in the flesh!

I was in the crowd just past the finish line and clearly remember Thurau taking at least one lap out in the finishing straight not too long before the end of the race. I did feel at the time that it was a little unfair that he got to have a 'rest' before winning!

So I spoke to the man who got fourth place and he is insistent that Thurau took a number of laps out during the race, one lap out is allowed in a circuit race but any more than that and your out of contention. So it looks as if there was a certain amount of collusion between the organisers and one of the stars on the day.

I got this vid of the Glendrick Cup at Eastway circa 1977 - acording to the record Taurau should never have won this race as it doesn't show but he took a lap out for a mechanical after five laps to go in which case he should have been demoted to fifth place
