I have the same problem this happens on start up and random times when on the pc the solution for now that i wouldn't reccomend is punching your laptop screen that usually gets rid of the problem but then slightly after it comes back i then went to a colder area in the house and the problem faded but then as the laptop started to get hotter at the bottom the problem was back i'm getting frustrated and about to throw my Dell laptop out the window
@p053ROO it needs a repair called Reballing, where the solder on the video chip on the motherboard is replaced. getting another motherboard won't solve the issue for long because they have a flaw.
This was the WORST PC I ever purchased. It was non stop problems from start to end. The item overheated and broke down constantly. In the end Dell replaced it, and the second one broke down with the same problem after just four months. I stopped using it and then contacted Dell last week. They are sending someone to change the motherboard again. I would NEVER buy another Dell product. I regret spending my hard earned money on this junk.
This just happened to me yesterday. I was using a "seminew" xps m1330, it was bought in 2008 but supposedly it was not used much. I got it for a low price and now i regret it. I thin i will avoid buying any Dell branded computer now. American companies seem to be lousy electronics manufacturers, first Microsoft with the Xbox 360 and now dell. cheers.

Try my copper shim to lower your gpu temps and keep your laptop from failing. It is only $7 and comes with thermal paste. Search for "M1330 copper shim" on ebay.
It's the video chip. What happen is the chip over heats and it slightly pops up off the board. What I do is I hot gun back on the board. My friend has the same identical laptop as your's and I read that the Dell M1330 has a GPU overheating issue. During extensive use the GPU gets hot and overtime it will pop off the board. That is why you have stream liens in your screen. What I did to my friends laptop is place copper shim which as a mini heat sink for the GPU to keep it cool.
I wonder if you could give me a bit more info on where this copper shine goes is it on the cpu or exactly where. And what do you mean when you say hot gun it back on the board,I would appreciate your time for replying thank you.
my xps has fried 6 times, all of this are the chipset on 8400m GS nvidia burning... my warranty is out and this iits still... FOR NOW... till it burns again, i bought a 50$ thermaltake cooling pad with a 150mm fan on it and keeps it kinda cool now quick question. I have a15 bios and i saw the new drivers they say you need a14... should i down grade or what?
yep, i just fixed again and mod it with copper sheet on Nvidia chipset and cpu chipset, average idle temperture Nvidia is 58 c (on atmosphere temp 22 c) vs 67 c without copper sheet.
-and i believe that if battery not hold charged it would cause this problem as well.. when i fixed with brand new 9 cell battery i let it run 8 hours no problem, i put back 6 cells near dead and problem occurs...this is so weird, but anyway if it run fine in 30 days i will sell mine.
I not sure it Bios or Bios problem, when i update to Bios A15 i had this problem and i downgrade back to A14 and problem still happen but it was back to normal in last few days, i don't when it will happen again...but anyway i look like Bios A14 is most stable and reliable for M1330.
-This piece of crap cost me too much money, i just purchased another 2 batteries (6 cells and 9 cells), warranty is out 4 months ago.
Had this problem with my Dell XPS 1330 when out of warranty. Laptop was on its way to the bin when I tried their support line. Turned out Nvidia extended the warranty on the GPU that was causing this problem and I had an onsite engineer form dell out to fix it (replace mobo) within a week. Haven't had the problem since.
same problem on my M1330 happened after I closed the screen and put it in the laptop bag assuming it would power off in sleep mode when the screen closed, but it stayed on and got real hot, I took it out 1/2 hour later and it was real hot and now the video is messed up just like this youtube example, and crashes. sigh
Same problem, had mine fixed at a local shop (I think they replaced a chip). The problem is due to insufficient cooling; no matter how many times the MB is replaced, it will always have a risk of breaking unless you make sure the fans are fully on which makes such a loud noise...
Had my xps fixed 3 times so far (all under the local shop's warranty)...
I have an XPS and it is the second time that I have this problem. They have repaired my xps with the same faulty hardware, and now my warranty is expired....I shall have to throw it in the trash
my Xps m1330 crashed like 9 months after i bought it and i got my motherboard replaced with the video card. Unfortunately it crashed again like 13 after that and my guarantee was only for 12 months. Now a new motherboard costs 450$ and i dont think ill ever buy a dell notebook again....
That's not a flaw with the computer model, it's a result of your graphics component breaking. You'll need a new motherboard since the graphics processing unit is built in to it.
I have the same laptop and what I'm thinking is that unlike the other PCs, when this crashes and the diskcheck runs through the files, there is a display issue and for the duration of the diskcheck the screen remains black (not very helpful). I I If you allow time for this check (the only way is for the display to return), it boots up as normal.
I just got this problems few weeks ago.. exactly the same as describing here.. after 24 months of using it... i don't playing games though. My warranty is already expired.. so.. I don't know yet what's gonna happen.. does anybody get replacement from dell even though the warranty expired? Thanks
This isn't really a Dell problem. It's an NVIDIA graphics problem that effects all latops with an 8xxx M series NVIDIA graphics card. HP, Acer, Toshiba, Gateway, etc. laptops the NVIDIA mobile cards are prone to this issue as well. My advise is if you have one that is still working is to sell it off on Craigslist ASAP, and buy another one with a 9xxx M series card or better yet, one with an ATI card.
Mines just done exactly the same thing as this one. Contacted dell support and now waiting for a response from them. Problem is I bought it last Feb so technichally it's now out of warrantly. I'll be pissed off if they turn around and say I have to pay for this to be repaired considering it's a massive design flaw with the laptop!
thanks for posting this video, it makes it very easy to explain to a Dell support tech what the problem is. My M1330 has exactly the same issue, after 1 year.
You have to replace the entire motherboard since the graphics card is integrated, you should call dell, they are offering extended warranty since this is a known issue with the nvidia 84 and 86 series.
I had this problem. If you built yours with the 8400GS graphics card (which is soldered to the motherboard) extensive use (such as playing games) causes so much heat that it actually damages the motherboard.
I had mine replaced... at that point they had 6 different revisions that all experienced the same problem. I don't play videogames on my m1330 anymore...
This is not graphic card problem! It's Toshiba WLED issue. I already had CMO, Toshiba and Samsung WLED in XPS... Toshiba crashed twice! Samsung is brighter and much better WLED screen!
This is no WLED problem because it happend the same thing conecting the laptop to an external screen. I had only 1 year of garanty, and now I'm screwed. Really desapointed with Dell...
Same thing happened to me over Christmas on 12month old 1330. Managed to arrange extended warranty so that complete motherboard can be replaced. It's a 'known problem' with the Nvidia graphics card. A new card is now built into the replacement board so hopefully the problem will not repeat.
My 1330 went through similar problems until it does not boot any more. It's an expensive paperweight. The cust srvc techs had me replace video drivers 3 times over 3 months - just enough time to let my warranty run out. Now, they kindly offer to let me ship it out to the depot. What I don't understand, if it's a known issue - why didn't they advise customers of potential?
had a similar problem 1330 11months old got a whole new motherboard fitted which only means i'm in the same position as when i bought it ie it could happen again
only thing i wanted to know was how it affects the warranty ???
dell have yet failed to reply to this question for me
so as usual as soon asyou hand over the money your screwed
nad that has nothing to do with the graphics card...I still have a 14 day return period so Im going to see if Dell can give me an extended warranty. If not I will go to best buy and look at small computers with the same Specs for around teh same price...if not then ill keep this XPS and hope the the best
hey people i found the solution if dell is not replacing your motherboard with nvidia chipsets, 3 reasons cause this to happend, so im making a video right now on ho to fix it!! regards!!!
I have had the same problem and everybody but Dell reps seem to know about this well documented problem. It's been 3 weeks and I still haven't had mine repaired due to backordered parts and really slow and confused Dell service.
dell has made a update profile for the nvidia graphic card for it's bios.. they said it was a problem with the graphic cards heating the heat was not distrabted well.. it's not dell's fault actually it's nvidia(nvidia) has made a public note on what happen with there high end notebook gpu.hp experiences the same problem
I've had similar problems with my XPS m1210. I got tired of their horrible laptops and I've switched back to using Apples laptops, now with the ability to install Windows in Leopards "Boot Camp" feature. well i work in dell on dekstops when a screen apears like that or something similar we uasally just take out the dimms (RAM) and clean the gold bits just like blow at them and then clean them with a shirt and put it back in and turn it on
i had the same problem as well. called for a technician to come over and he replaced the graphics card. it took less then a week to replace it. as long as you have warranty still you should be fine.
Hey I am having the same probelm with my dell xps m1330 too. I just wanna ask, did it take a long time for them to fix it? and does it cost you alot ?
I had the same problem it is not the motherboard but is the screen + video card you MUST you MUST format your HDD and install a clean copy of your OS. this will fix the problem =)
can't help you. The wierdest thing. People have all this trouble with dell and I have had dell for since forever. Never one issue relating to dell. I have had problems with my computer but I caused them and I know how to fix it... So I am happy with dell
Ok, I am 16 now and our family has owned a dell computer since I was 6. We had one dell computer which actually got recycled about 3 years ago. That computer was like 5 years old and my mom has a 5 year old computer and I have a 1.5 year old computer and my bro has a 3.5 year old laptop all from dell. They have never had a problem.
this shit is happening to me too. shiza.sometimes it works when the power plug is connected and sometimes it doesn't and sometimes it works when only the battery is plugged in. its weird.
I have this problem now. It took me also the whole day to get them to send somebody over to fix it for me u_u. Whatever you do, DO NOT USE CHAT SUPPORT, you should call them a couple of times until you get an American to help you. No offense to the tech support in other countries. It just seems like theres a lot of miscommucation when speaking to somebody from another country.
Yep. I'm having the same issue now. At first it would happen once in a while but it would start up after I shut it down for a few minutes. Now it goes straight to the vertical lines. I have to call in to have a tech replace my motherboard when I get time :(
The same thing happened to me. Dell sent out a technician (contracted - didn't actually work for dell). He replaced the screen. The problem persisted. He came out and replaced the motherboard. The board was dead on arrival. So, Dell asked me to send my comp to them. They told me the motherboard was installed incorrectly. When they returned my comp, the LED screen flicked when I turned it on, and will now no longer switch to his brightest setting. I will never buy another computer from Dell.
Dell sent over a technician to replace my motherboard, which resolved the problem. The technician informed me that he has been replacing a lot of motherboards on the XPSM1330 model and even replaced a motherboard earlier that day. I also talked to someone who worked for Dell at corporate headquarters and this person told me that the XPSM1330 model was having a lot of their motherboards replaced. The technician told me this model is a time bomb just waiting to blow out its motherboard.
I've had this problem once and had to send it into dell, it was fixed but recently it started happening again, the lines are now solid colours rather than shades of grey
I had the first generation XPS laptop and it had the exact same issue. I was able to fix it however I can't remember what I did to solve the problem. It had something to do with a software setting in the driver I think.
I want this video on my Hitz 2206 phone.

The XPS series are full of problems.
My computer came with a few shitty drivers.
The sound card only worked with headsets.
Video driver crashes every half hour.
Windows spent 2 hours installing patches and then turned off before finishing, that ruined mu hard drive.
And now my computer doesn't connect to the monitor or usb and the cpu fan acts like the processor is on fire.

My experience with dell
I order a laptop XPS studio13 on March this year
In May after a lot of calls asking what happened they send to me an ordinary email saying that is lost in the send.
That I have 2 options, they can send it again or return my money.
I didn want to wait another month so I ask for the money (but it will take 48 days)
However they charge the 3 monthly quotas from my credit card.
Now in August Im still waiting for my money, the support number.. no solutions really useless.

i had the same problem as well. called for a technician to come over and he replaced the graphics card. it took less then a week to replace it. as long as you have warranty still you should be fine.

can't help you. The wierdest thing. People have all this trouble with dell and I have had dell for since forever. Never one issue relating to dell. I have had problems with my computer but I caused them and I know how to fix it... So I am happy with dell

your the only one mate, I know ten people who bought dell and never will again

Ok, I am 16 now and our family has owned a dell computer since I was 6. We had one dell computer which actually got recycled about 3 years ago. That computer was like 5 years old and my mom has a 5 year old computer and I have a 1.5 year old computer and my bro has a 3.5 year old laptop all from dell. They have never had a problem.

I had this same problem. They replaced my motherboard but now about 5 months later I'm having this problem again.

I have to call in to have a tech replace my motherboard when I get time :(

since there's so many cases of graphics issues on the m1330, i guess i should just get an inspiron instead.

*UPDATE*

I have the same problem. I've bought in the US and brought it to Brazil. Now Dell Brazil, doesn't want to fix it !

I had the first generation XPS laptop and it had the exact same issue. I was able to fix it however I can't remember what I did to solve the problem. It had something to do with a software setting in the driver I think.

I had no idea about this issue. I think you're just an unlucky man. Maybe you've got a uncompatible shiti driver runs on it.
