  • uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Bright Eyes IS a religion.

    at least it's mine.

on christmas we hang cds on the tree.

  • i cant find another song writer as good as conor. i guess kevin devine comes pretty damn close

  • Well, that was different.

  • @rockabye63 different as in AMAZING. :)

  • who the hell they are!

  • Conor isn't the new Dylan (although that's pretty high praise) he's the heir to Elliott's throne. There will never be another Elliott Smith, but Conor Oberst has certainly taken his torch and run with it! Thank you for that!!!

  • Like art could save a wretch like me... i love that line

  • so beautiful

  • So much emotion.

  • How is he not more famous?

  • @ghost2694 Actually he's very famous... His shows usually always sell out at big venues.

  • @indiereplicant more famous

  • so much better than the shallow music most people like.

  • "brother of a folk singer"

  • Where is the motherfucking "love" button?!

  • is it not jockying for posision?

  • @ALfaDuB101 yeah but ive noticed he tends to make up different lyrics sometimes lol. he skipped "my head feels weak" at 4:31

  • @jumpergirl93 yeah but strange choice of words, jerking each other off lol

  • @ALfaDuB101 lol. okay ill give you that one. idk why he changed it.

  • 7 people don't like wasting paint

  • how can anyone not like this?

  • One detail I took note of is that his singing voice in this recording is the same as the recording on his CD...

  • @mrraraibyouka Are you saying he lip syncs or do you mean hes not autotuned or editted or anything when live? O-o

  • @Xxgirlover413xX Hm. I mean that he's not autotuned live-- or on his record. Some performers sound very different live vs on the CD. Oberst does not, because he's good, and doesn't need to be. He also does some impressive vocals which sound unnatural, yet he manages them naturally. Impressive.

  • @mrraraibyouka nope it's not.

  • god.

  • hes so amazing, perfect song writing and melodies. on a side note - gosh hes beautiful.

  • He looks high!! Rock on Conor!

  • Comment removed

  • Conor shouldn't be compared to anything... Not even Bob Dylan.. Sorry to say but hes better than Bob Dylan..

  • I used to hate Bright Eyes. Then, I saw this video and now I quite enjoy them.

  • @chimpanzeethat1

    @Biltospill

knock it off. it's a fucking song. This is a beautiful piece of art, and if you don't like it, then please leave. No one cares about your opinion here. We don't even know you. Who cares whos big or not? Like what you like, because you like it.

  • 402 nebraskaaaa ;)

  • " no no i'm a student of medicine, the brother of a folk singer you don't understand"

    he changed it haha

  • this song is to the point.

    bright eyes is gold.

  • I think there's enough space in the world to fit as many talented artist as we can get.

  • Bright Eyes should be a religion, not a band.

    Conor is God

  • Will my number come up eventually?

Like love's some kind of lottery

Where you scratch and see what's underneath

    It's sorry, just one cherry

    I'll play again, get lucky

    Conor is genius

  • I love Conor and I love Bob Dylan. They are both talented.

The only difference for me is I have to be in the mood to listen to Dylan.

But Conor is every mood for me.

  • over-rated song, to say oberst is better than Dylan is hilarious ...oberst is oozing with pretense

  • @chimpanzeethat1 i find it odd you chose this song to spew your 'pretentious' divel about oberst is oozing wih pretense. Did you listen to the song or just hear it? Are you blind but can see? to suggest this song is OVER rated suggest there is a rating system for music.. im curious, please eloborate on how one rates a song or musician over another? While its often played in arenas music is not a team sport. If music was a game what would the score be? Dylan 4 Oberst 3? How does one score?

  • @Biltospill Your comment is the type of cringe inducing pretense i'm talking about. Idealism derived from pubescent self-indulgence. So you think that all Musical artists are all equal and none is superior to anyone else??On that logic vanilla ice should share equal critical merit to the smiths or the clash, and the godfather should be fall in line with Saw IV? Get a grip sonny, graduate from your teenage years, explore the world of music, art, and life in general, then come back to me.

  • @chimpanzeethat1 lol you are a joke. Music is judged by the individual not the charts. wtf is critical merit? Is that the measure or method used to score one artist to another.. and is it not true critics themselves take on a form which needs measure? DO yo get it? No! So you like Dylan over Oberst and another differs, get over your pretense or should i say pretentious love afair for Dylan for 5 seconds to realize music is personal. I had no idea you were the single know all of music.

  • @chimpanzeethat1 by your logic katy perry, because she gets 50 million hits on youtube is rated higher than even dylan himself... So do tell me again how we measure.. critical merit? Is it not just personal opinion that truly matters and if not why listen to music at all? is it because you find a pretense to listen to cool music and have cool friends and are more interested in the image than the actual art itself. You are a complete contradiction.

  • @Biltospill did i mention anything about charts?...brain donor!t i very much doubt people will be listening to conor oberst in 40 years time. Its like trying to say a piece of graffiti is better than a van gough, you might think it is, and that's fair enough, but that opinion more so reflects your incompetence to judge..do you even understand what pretense is? ....anyway, don't you have have some homework to do or parents to rebel against or something !

  • @chimpanzeethat1 pretense is a claim that is made or implied.. what did you think it meant?because Van Gough is popular does not mean its better, does that escape you?It appears this is simply a popularity contest. And what you are telling me is that because so many people listed to Lady Gaga or Like lady gaga or have talked about lady gaga, she is by far more popular than Dylan therfore she is better. But what really matters...cannot be told to me by people like you beacuse its POPULAR.GET IT?

  • @chimpanzeethat1 let me make it simple for you... your OPINION that DYLAN is rated higher than OBERST is a personal evaluation backed by how you FEEL. No one will argue that you feel that way. But not everyone likes Dylan. You have danced around the question and i suspect its because you have no answer. Tell me how you rate one musician over another and we can continue this debate... otherwise I will wait for your dance. (critical merit??? name the critic)

  • @chimpanzeethat1 and more importantly, conor says himself in road to joy, 'Well I could have been a famous singer If I had someone else's voice But failure's always sounded better" he isn't famous like dylan, no but hes not cheap like dylan either. hes real hes heartfelt and he make better music than you can comprehend because you can't see past the imperfections into the perfection underneath

  • @Mistevity hey now don't be hating on dylan -_-

but yes, all the attributes you mentioned about Conor are true, he be awesomes. well, awesomes most of the time, some of his songs become predictably depressing, while other just make you say wow.

  • @chimpanzeethat1 hey 'chimp' vanila ice, the smiths, the clash, the godfather and saw IV ARE ALL EQUAL its not a matter of equality its a matter of personal preferance

  • I fuckin cried

  • @Crapsghetti you really need to get a grip - mental midget

  • @Crapsghetti me too man

  • So ridiculously good. His poetry is beautiful. He aint half hot an all.

  • he's so beautiful.

  • Cant decide if this or To love and be loved is the best song ever. Maybe both.

  • reminds me of the first time I listened to Tangled Up in Blue.

Funny because I heard this song months before listened to Tangled up in blue.

I hear new things every time I hear Connor's masterpiece.

  • please dont kill bright eyes conor!

  • @mkoscienski1 bright eyes is just a name, yeah? All I hope for is that he keeps on making music. I loved all his music under other names, ya know?

    :)

  • @oak1236 i dunno the bright eyes stuff has always been it for me. i dont doubt any direction he goes will be anything less than amazing, just sayin the bright eyes stuff has a place in my heart like nothing else in the world.

  • How sad: six people missed the like button. But, I didn't =]

  • I've listened to this atleast 20 times in a row:)

  • "when someone receives the prize that was promised, by those fairytale's that drugged us" oh my god...word

  • TROLOLOLOL

  • Good music begins with the lyrics.. this is excellent song writing, one of my favorite bright eyes songs.. too me a song that doesnt have anything to say ( 99% of the junk they play on the radio) is horrible regardless of how good the instruments are played..

  • He is a magnificant singer and poet, mike mogis and matt wolcott are also musical geniuses.. <3

  • @KaruneshAmigo nate wolcott ;)

  • This is the first time I am hearing this song, and though I think the lyrics are beautiful and read like poetry, I am not a huge fan of the music composition. His voice has inflections of pain and is saturated with emotion, but it does not stand out for its musical component. It is all in the words, for me...

  • @in2ennui thats the thing, the music composition seems a bit off to me, i love this song, but like the way he squeezes syllables in idk it just doesnt seem to fit sometimes. i love the song regardless

  • What amazes me more than the beautiful content and message of his songs is the fact that he has such profound wisdom and insight at such a young age. He is truly a tired old soul.

  • amazing.

  • I love this song.

  • love the verse about the couple who fit together like a puzzle....it's brilliant. <3

  • i keep watching thissssss its fuckin ace

  • @RUSKOFAN88 A truly accurate statement Special K

  • one of my favorite live performances on youtube. Thanks for the post.

  • Eoic!

  • I think it is "Student of Medicine"

  • ya it is

  • it most certainly is , hence Justin Oberst beeing a Student of medicine.

  • he amazeses me everyday, no word of a lie!

  • This is my top song of the last decade.

  • i'm in love with this song

  • whoa the complete silence after he says "echo" at 5:32 is just holy. i think my heart stopped for a second

  • and when the voices blended they sounded like 'angels'

favorite part :D god he is such a good sir.

  • I'm a really big Bob Dylan fan but this is better than anything he ever wrote

  • >_________>

    I wouldn't go that far.

  • @mnelker Oh, please. It's a very good song. Let's not get carried away.

  • @mnelker LOLOLOLOLOL DID YOU REALLY JUST SAY THIS KID IS BETTER THAN BOB DYLAN

    ROFLROFLROFLROFLROFL OKAY

  • Comment removed

  • @mnelker bob dylan is a dead beat loser from birth stfu dont compare you aint a critic

  • @leapordonmyright That was completely unnecessary. The music Bob Dylan makes is similar to what Connor makes, and there are a multitude of comparisons that can be made.

But obviously they aren't the same person, which means there's no reason to insult one for being compared to the one you like better.

For his time, Bob Dylan was what Connor is to many people today.

  • @mnelker It's alright ma mops the floor with this! Just kidding... to say anything is better than anything else is foolish. All these musical arguments that come to be due to these silly comments are all senseless and laughable.

  • number one

  • never noticed this

    2:23

...im a student of medicine brother of a folk singer you dont understand.

    haha pretty cool

  • it might of been "..medicine, son of a lawyer..."

he says later "though your fathers name is kwn"

    ! hes so good!

  • he changed that lyric when i saw him live and everyone screamed, but i guess this audience is polite.

  • this is by far my favorite bright eyes song, and i doubt i'll ever find one that enthralls me more

  • yeah, it's mine to. It's so strong and true.

  • You know you're a good artist when you make a beautiful song that sums up are your work in like 5 verses creatively, and call it all shit in the same song.

  • he is the best writer of all times,

  • Dylan, baby.

  • this song hurts to listen to...it really is beautiful

  • Comment removed

  • gah i've seen this video so many times. every couple of months i find it again, and ever single time i do, i'm moved by it. it's a beautifully simple song, and he sings it with such feeling.. i just can't get over it. thank the stars for conor oberst.

  • how can you NOT feel this music in your hole body?

  • this is the first song i herd from him.

    this is like..

i cannot find words for how much

    i love this song.

    my god

  • this song gives me chills.

  • How old is he?

  • I think now hes like 27 or 28 or so, maybe even older 0_o...And this is in 06 sooo...yeah.

  • Wow, really? He looks like 19 in this haha.

  • Actually he's 29.

  • NO YOU.

  • god I fucking love this song. he's great live

  • "It's clear to see it's not them but me Who's lost my self-identity And I hide behind these books I read While scribbling my poetry Like art could save a wretch like me With some ideal ideology That no one could hope to achieve And I'm never real, it's just a sketch of me And everything I've made is trite and cheap And a waste Of paint, of tape, of time" Spoke to me in a way that a no song ever has before. Beautiful.
  • so ive been listening to this song for a couple months now. i listen to it almost once a day but ive tried dipping into his other songs and most are too country for me any suggestions bright eyers?

  • You may just not be a true fan. But I'd be happy to help you sink into the beauty of Bright Eyes. What other bands do you like. That would help me see what type of music you do like. Get back to me.

  • Beatles, Modest Mouse, Brand New

  • It's so hard to fit the glory of Oberst into a few songs but, I will try. I suggest Perfect Sonnet, Endless Entertainment, Amy in the White Coat, Laura Laurent, I will be Grateful for this Day, Don't Know When But A Day's Gonna Come, and Haligh, Haligh an awful lie. Those songs show a wide variety of Bright Eye's without the country sound. Be sure to try out the "hit" songs too, such as Lover I Don't Have To Love and Easy/Lucky/Free.

  • where is this country sound you speak of

  • I don't really catergorize any Bright Eyes as full blown country, but there are some songs that are more country than others. Wide Awake is known for it's country, folksy sound.

  • yeha folksy not country.

  • I too don't consider any Bright Eyes country, but some people who don't like folk consider folk and country the same thing because they hate that sound all together. But..... as any treu Bright Eyes fan knows.. folk rocks!

  • o yes folk rocks

  • I'm not categorizing him as country but some of his song def have a country sound.... not even dogging him but it's true (as my opinion) i'll call it folk and say it's awesome. any other recommendations for songs?

  • Sunrise, Sunset. Dont Know When but a Days going to come. The City has Sex. Make War. At the Bottom Of Everything. First Day of my Life. The calender hung itself. and Going For The Gold. They are all great Bright Eyes songs. Maybe try some from the Mystic Valley Band as well.

  • not this song but many other bright eyes songs have a touch of country to em. just an opinion but the fast week or so ive been dling more songs and theyre all fucknig great.

  • i have heard every song conor has written. there is no country.

  • kevin devine.

    right away, great captain.

    both have similar singing styles.

    they also have wonderful lyrics.

not as good as conor oberst.

    but very good.

  • and bright eyes songs.

    bowl of oranges.

    haligh, haligh, a lie, haligh.

    the calender hung itself.

    hit the switch.

    i believe in symmetry.

    oh, you are the roots.

lets not shit ourselves. (if you hate the government)

  • country?

  • You're nothing but a steping stone...On the path,to debt!

  • ahh this guy is so deep. great emotion

  • He shoulda kept his hair at this length, instead of letting it grow alot

  • most def

  • who cares about his hurrr

  • one of the best performances i have ever seen Conor do . Absoloutely amazing

  • man his words were so strong that i just realize there's only a guitar being played and i listen to this song like over fifty times :o

  • plus he's only playing with 3 chords ! he's a genius !

  • Comment removed

  • LOL TEH FUNNY

  • NO U

  • what the fuck.

  • NO U

  • Do not feed the troll.

  • first bright eyes song i ever heard, and probably still my favorite. at least in my top 5.

  • he is a geniussssss

  • indeed he is

  • Did he say "jerking each other off"????

  • this song just proves how genuine conor oberst is. i am in love with bright eyes!

  • conor > dylan

  • be careful of what you say my friend... Dylan is DYLAN.

  • they shouldn't be under comparison, they are both different and both incredible artists. they may carry similar tones or some similar lyrical ideals.

but not everything can or should be placed in a box so simply.

  • I don't get it. People just have no self opinion anymore. You have to like what others like. People have to talk about all the stuff other people do. Lots of people compare Connor to Dylan, and they don't care, they just want to fit in, and people think that they HAVE to like the "legends" just because everyone thinks they are good. I'm not trying to change anyone's opinion, just saying, you don't have to like something just to get notice by other people who like that same thing...

  • Why the fuck are you sayin' this?

I, for example, love Dylan not because of the others. I just have ears and I have listen to The Freeweelin' and loved it. The same for "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning" by Bright Eyes

  • No I'm not hating on dylan or connor at all. I'm not trying to change people's opinions or ideas, i just want people to think...I should have never have posted that comment on youtube. Sorry if I made people angry but I don't want to see more people saying "OMG Led Zeppelin is way better than thiss and they rock so much harderr." It's just that I...I don't know, go on doing what you do I'm not going to change anything, but have an opinion don't be a robot

  • The question is : why are saying this ? Is there a relation with the video, or any comments that have been done here ?

  • When I look at it I think I was just trying to say my opinion. It was unneeded and I probably shouldn't have said it. I didn't mean to come off as a jerk, I just think I was rambling. I wasn't targeting any comments in particular, I just hate it when people are like "No one is better than the ALL TIME GREAT so and so band" sorry man, I didn't mean to be an ass...

  • Well man there's no problem about it. Feel free to say what you want

    Cheers

  • My big problem with people and music is when they say stuff is horrible. I feel that you can listen to something and not like it, but you can't call it horrible. I completely respect it when people say they don't like Oberst, but when they call his music awful it just annoys the hell outta me.

  • i agree. i think people that say that just haven't given the other music a chance...

  • totally. even music you think you don't like just might do it for you at the right moment. if you label it as horrible or even as 'music i don't like', you close yourself off to that possibility.
