@Aqene1000 it's an automated system, it doesn't have bell-ringers, so probably it would be difficult, though concievably you could use it to play any song that requires only the notes present in its current song (since those are presumably the only bells in the tower)
@ednuttah I think what he means is that the tower itself isn't Big Ben- big ben is specifically the name of the bell which tolls the hour; hence, the musical part isn't big ben, it's the westminster chimes.
Yes they are quite loud and you can hear them across the city. It's just that the video was taken on my mobile phone so that's why the sound is a little quiet!
There's also the problem of wind direction. I once stood across the street from the clock and couldn't hear the chimes, since they are lighter and the wind was blowing in the wrong direction. Big Ben can be heard no matter what.
No, if the wind is blowing in a different direction you can be very close and still not hear it, strange but true it's 100m high so the sound travels anywhere really , if your behind a building you can miss the chimes, but you can be on the opposite bank and hear it clearly if the wind blows your way. Strange but true.
@emmettsgirl981 Well well well. British people who live in London you better stay the fuck out of Big Ben cuz Big Ben will be blown up in 2012 new years eve ;) you better be prepared not be die in front of shitty big ben im telling you all. Illuminati is the enemy of this world death to devil worshippers. So watch out men ;)
Apperently, when the bell for the tower was first built it smashed and only half the bell still remains intact and is used, which gives it a slighty shakey E note.
Yes, that's true. The Victorians being ones for splendour and glory wanted it to be as loud and as powerful as possible, but they went a bit over the top!
I lived in London for a year and the highlight was always venturing tothe Thames across the bridge and listening to this magnificent historical timepiece continue its place in history. Truly one of the 1000 things to see before you die!
11am and clouded like that? I really want to visit the historical London, it seems like it's always raining and very chilly right there, but I doubt there is ever any snow in the winter, maybe that's why Englishmen spend thair winters in Sweden, Switzerland or Finland
Eh? Not heard that one before. I know most Englishmen spend their winters at home! It does usually rain though, I can agree with that! It's because we live right in the middle of the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. I like the cold frosty mornings though.
oh man! I would love to experience those British frosty mornings, here in Mexico we get quite a few of those but only in the winter months and since I live in a hot dry area the winters are short but intense, but I want to experience that cold climate all year round and I know that in England I can get it maybe when I go visit I won't want to leave England's definetively the first country I would visit when I go to "Europear bastante" like we Mexicans say or "Jump the pond" like Americans say
Englishmen spend their winters in in Sweden or Finland! HA HA HA, thats news to me! Try spain or Portugal or anywhere warm, I know thats where Id'e rather be.
Oh. I know it sounded like how it does in this clip on "The Great Mouse Detective," but I thought they just used a different clock sound in that movie

Were the chimes very loud from where you were sitting because they didn't sound very loud on the video?

It's simple. All you do is get a house thats really far away from the clock and if you really want to see it, you can drive there every day.

After the main chime there is one bong for each hour.

You did a very good job of recording, being patient for a minute before and not talking through it, nor making any camera noise.
.
Having the Westminster tune and eleven gongs; great.
Cheers.

It's easy to be quiet while the clock is chiming because you can be so fascinated by it. I know I wouldn't talk if I was listening to Big Ben.
