That is fucking bullshit. I used to have a pond that I kept bass and perch in. Me and my family caught all of the fish from a lake that is about 6 miles away from it. All of the fish that we caught(eventually over 300 total) were fine, and I didn't see a single fish float up. I don't know where the hell people get this crap from, it's ridiculous....

Here's some of the reasons that the fish should NOT be release back in the water:
They'll die anyway from the stress, fighting fatigues, wounds done by the hook etc.,, lack of oxygen and many other such true facts related to catch and release.. So many people are doing more harm than good. Thankyou smokingjayble for being polite.
this is untrue, yes any fish u catch and release might die from the ordeal however IF HANDLED PROPERLY the vast majority or fish u catch can be released to fight another day. Proper handling includes using heavy line so u can real it in quickly and un hooking it in the water. A lot of the tagging is done by catching fish with a hook and line and they almost all survive to send us info. Just something to keep in mind.
Smokingajayble: You're right about careful handlling but.. How many do this? What you're saying is the equivalent of the experts who talk about the dangers of burping & puncturing ... means reeling it in too quickly. Thus, their swim bladder then overinflates so you have to be very careful messaging the fish (burping) in order for it to live or he'll drown. May as well bring it home and eat it. :)
Maybe so but where im from we have much better eating fish than pike, lake trout brook trout walleye, whitefish ect so i consider pike more of a sport fish, just for fun. @msu57 To be honest though If your fishing In a competition where the purpose is to see who can catch the biggest, then yeah put it back but If your just want a laugh with your mates, then theres no harm in killing, as long as you eat it eventually. Im the latter, Yes i do it for the thrill of seeing what will be on my hook but mostly I make meals from them. Basically fish are being killed every day so It doesn't really matter how many people do it, there will still be fish.

Here's some of the reasons that the fish should NOT be release back in the water:
They'll die anyway from the stress, fighting fatigues, wounds done by the hook etc.,, lack of oxygen and many other such true facts related to catch and release.. So many people are doing more harm than good. Thankyou smokingjayble for being polite.

this is untrue, yes any fish u catch and release might die from the ordeal however IF HANDLED PROPERLY the vast majority or fish u catch can be released to fight another day. Proper handling includes using heavy line so u can real it in quickly and un hooking it in the water. A lot of the tagging is done by catching fish with a hook and line and they almost all survive to send us info. Just something to keep in mind.

What you're saying is the equivalent of the experts who talk about the dangers of burping & puncturing ... means reeling it in too quickly. Thus, their swim bladder then overinflates so you have to be very careful messaging the fish (burping) in order for it to live or he'll drown. May as well bring it home and eat it. :)

Maybe so but where im from we have much better eating fish than pike, lake trout brook trout walleye, whitefish ect so i consider pike more of a sport fish, just for fun. But if theres a healthy population and u like pike then ya go for it just make sure theres still a fishery left for our kids is all, i mean u d kno the leakes u fish better than i would so i cant really comment on that i kno some of the lakes i live near have just been dystroyed by over fishing, others do fine.

But the fact that you mention that some of the lakes where you live have been destroyed by overfishing leads me to believe that my statement above is more real than fiction. And that is, most fisherman don't know how or bother to reel in a fish properly or how to let him go properly & end up hurting it. Thus killing them so this means less fish in the lakes. Any lake.
