12" Main?! I'm a designer and doubt it's that big. But I've designed dozens of wet pipe systems in cold parking garages, just need to use dry pendents and heat the space above the ceiling.

I know that. I installed dozens of dry system. If it is 12" main, then it would be the supply to the header. No? It would not be feeding branch lines! If that's the case, it would not be a dry system. That's my guess?

well the building is 2 floor parking garage and on top of that is 11 floors with like 15 20 apartments on each floor and no the only had it hidden by ceiling tiles wit little inso and there were power wires right by it

@DeathWish1974 they can use dry sprinkler systems, like in 99,9998% of parkings garages. On the other side, heat a parking garage is totally impossible...

@DeathWish1974 yes sir 12" main for sprinkler system trust I got the photos of it the whole system where they had wires and gas lines n so on didnt look right from the door you should gop there and check it out you will find a lot of weird stuff that maybe no one does any where I mean it is mckeesport..lol..

@18ricco that aint no 12 inch fire main. maybe the citys main coming into the building is 12 inchs, but thats at most an 8 inch main , maybe 6. a 12 inch line would need a 12 inch valve. and a 12 inch valve is about the size of prius. i doubt you have 12 inch valves on every floor. and a MAIN means the LINE up to your building. NOT INSIDE which is this broken pipe. This is  a FIRE RISER line. a 12 line busted would be 3 times has much. why didnt you shut it off at the street

if this was a fire main also why is there no horns and strobes? simple kill your main fire backflow, kill hte fire pumps, open the city side vault and shut the main, with your water key or pipe wrench.

@JohnJohnTerrazas look u would have to talk to McKeesport Fire or city they couldnt even decide who's problem it was in the first place so any quetions on why this or that has to be referred to them and the building cause I really do not know but to say it was a 12 in water line for the sprinkler system that the 11 story building had

I think,the sprinkler system of this parking is not a dry (pipes filled with air pressure instead water,in normal time),but with water and anti-freeze (glycol). This works,but if the winter is more colder than expected ,the water freezes anyway. the 2nd possibility is the dry system,but a if malicious guy had open a trip valve (it drains the air pressure and fills the pipes with water),and re-close this ,just before water arrives,the pipes will be not protected from freeze.
