CFW stands for custom firmware. It's basically a modified version of Sony's firmware that lets you run applications and such that aren't officially made by Sony. And yes you do have to have it. If you go to my channel I have a couple videos. What a PSP can do. And why hack your PSP. Or you can just search it on YouTube.

It has to be a hacked PSP. And the only way to hack a PSP 3000 is to use a program called Chikhen. But you have to be on firmware 5.03 for Chikhen to work.
