I hope they make a new Unreal in the oldschool manner, no story, no dialogue, your just there, you have no idea who you are or why you are there, perhaps you crashed or something, but you are there, and you have to survive, and the ambience and feel is top priority. :)

That was the coolest part. You could treat like a pure action game and go shoot your way through. Or you could savour the story and atmosphere and treat it like a mystery/sci-fi novel. Games shouldn't pressure you to play it a certain way.

Oh, but they returned strongly in 2004 with a massively enhanced and enjoyable experience.

I'd say it's -less- relevant on the FPS market due to the way it plays out. While mainstream FPS-gamers prefer CS or BF2, the UT series puts emphasis on pitting players towards eachother in gladiator fights where the most acrobatic and accurate wins.

I second that Mastah, but i think it's pretty tricky for the developers to come up with something that will blow you away.. AGAIN nowadays.

Anyhow, up until UT2004, my thoughts about a great background story was slim to none.. It ruined the atmosphere for a great part of it. Although i've been playing UT2004 to death, i don't have the idea of even buying UT3. It's that simple =]

Yeh, i have been playing the series since the first installment came out back in '98 (Unreal 1). And i actually still play it every now and then along with UT1.

The addings to the newer games are quite nice, but overall i prefer the simplicity from the older ones.

yeah, but they don't have the spirit, they always lack something... Doom 3 was just silly in my opinion. For example, all they did were add some graphics and made the monsters spawn in the most annoying ways possible, with a cheezy storyline.

Unreal was such a fascinating game when it came out around 1998. I was one of the very few who had the PC specs to play it in my area. I think I had a P11 400mhz running Voodoo2, the top dog back then. LOL.

I remember the first time I ran the game and was just staring at the unbelievable graphics. The opening sequence was all it took as the camera moved around a castle scenery. The size of the outside levels were great, and indoor rooms had great lightning effects. Music, AI, etc = AWESOME!

Part 2 -

As far as I am concerned, Unreal 1 will always be the best Unreal. It was the only Unreal game then (when played) actually made me believe I was in a completely different world. I felt I was actually entering their world as I played. The Music was a great contribution towards that at they suited perfectly for the story and gorgeous graphics.

So true. Also, I think the atmosphere in the original Unreal game is what makes it so great. No spoken dialogue, only you walking around figuring things out in the scenery. The graphics are also so vibrant, so color full in a way, yet very dark. The new unreal games don't have this, which makes them very disappointing.

Even with no dialogue, and only the diary entries of fallen comrades telling their tale, the game exuded sheer atmosphere and brilliance. Game developers today could learn something from classics such as Unreal.

Some levels begged to be just stood in only to admire.

From the simply astounding Nali castle, to the floating city and sunspire. I just stood ang gaped in dumbfounded awe at the exotic beauty the first time I exited the Vortex Rikers. - Oh yeah and the opressive loneliness of the level just after exiting the ISV Kran at night. Man I just stopped and stared at the stars a while in that level.

This brings it all back hehe.

A remake isn't really necessary. Unreal has one of the best internet communities. It looks and sounds awesome with the community patches and the S3TC texture-packs.

no.7 is great. The level was really hard as well. You had to learn how to use the biosludge gun thing really well.

If anyone wants to use these tracks I know that Modplug will play the files (i think they're UMX) and it will also convert to MP3. Although I remember that the converted file was very big when I tried.

I have found one,

it's called "MODPlug Player 1.46",

not the one I used before but it's good too and has surround in it. I have noticed that music sounds a bit differently in that player, sometimes even better... or may be it's because of my new X-Fi sound card =)

and by the way, that famous VLC Media Player can play umx music too, but it will be midi-rendered.. I'm sure many people know about that VLC.
