No thanks, give me a nice full rounded FEMALE mezzo singing this any day! The countertenor voice is fantastic but after a while it starts to irritate one because it lacks the fullness and core of a full chorded tone. Physiologically countertenors only sing with the edges of the chords not the full voice hence the term falsetto because it lack the realness of the normal full voice.
@Chanteuredelopera I partly agree with you; I have to add, though, that not all countertenors lack the fullness and core in tone. I am quite aware of how the countertenor voice is produced. BUT, some guys, e.g. David Daniels, have managed to mix some of the chest resonance in the timbre, which sounds colourful and most interesting, especially in the middle and low parts of the voice. Also, Spanos is such a case.
And yes, Carmen is a woman in any case. No countertenors there! :-)
@thebarroque What do you mean? What's wrong with people singing pieces originally written for the opposite gender? I'm all up for tenors singing soprano roles etc. Sopranos have sung 'boy' parts for centuries, what's so intrinsically unacceptable about the other way around?
@eugenelohks Well, first of all, composers who create music decide for their own reason the gender of the singer. Mozart wrote Cherubino for a woman, because that's the type of sound he wanted for a boy. But he wrote castrato parts, too. He knew exactly what he wanted! Women only SUBSTITUTED for castrati roles; that was just an inevitable practice. If we don't understand this, we are just being ignorant and disrespectful.
@thebarroque I have wondered the same for so long... it seems that somehow, making a fool out of music and out of oneself really sells these days. Our times have small tolerance for serious artists because we, the audience, are not serious in listening - not to mention ignorant...

Why Countertenors can't be good boys and only sing castrato/countertenor parts in music?!
