Nice video with good view of the steep pitch on the far side. I've been over it 5 times with my stock '86 Trooper and twice with my stock '94 4Runner with Downey springs. Back in the '80's you had to nose into a table at the bottom of the steep pitch, back down, go forward at the end of the next pitch, back down the next and then go forward out. By '05 you didn't have to back up any pitches. All the trail requires is a competent vehicle, confident driver and a good spotter.
Have you seen that trail in person? Aside from possibly a rock buggy with 4 wheel steering, there is no vehicle on earth that will make that turn in one shot.
Look at my videos, I make that turn going up hill, which having been there in person can attest to the blindness of that turn going uphill therfore the higher difficulty, I just made that turn going downhill last month for about the 10th time. Granted it was not in an LR3 and I was just poking twicetimesthrice in the ribs...
My point being yes, you can make that turn without backing up, I do it in a Land Rover D1.
I don't see the need to make an already difficult and dangerous section of trail all that much more so by not setting up for a good line. Needling people into doing such things is what causes bad accidents such as rollovers that ultimately invoke trail closures especially in national parks where it is an unusual privledge to be able to drive a vehicle in the back country. Kudos to you though for your driving ability to make that turn in one shot.
I havent been thru elephant hill in 10 years but unless it has been made into a highway I couldn't get my motorcycles around some turns. I Had to get off. maybe a dozen trips up/down.
Elephant hill is so tight I cant get my Motorcycle around some of the 180's. You must get off the bike and use your hip and/or rev and spin the tire to make the turn. I have had my back pack torn off. I lost tach cables and speedometer cables snagging little things going up it. Down isn't so bad. The best down drive is thru beef basin and up top to Kilgalia etc..
