  • Agree that Sarah, Harry &Dr#4 are THE best-ever trio in DW. In the DVD commentaries of Seasons 12,13&14, Philip Hinchcliffe notes the production team, very early on, noticed how natural Tom Baker and Lis Sladen were together, so he decided to write Harry out in early Season 13. Robert Holmes objected, saying that Harry was a great companion for Sarah, & the trio worked well, but Hinchcliffe insisted. Hinchcliffe does say that he is sorry for the poor send-off of Harry & Benton in ANDROID INV.

  • Harry is one of my favorite companions too. Tom's first season wouldn't have been nearly as funny if it wasn't for him

  • Harry was a fabulous man and Sarah even thought so, she said that she loved him. Well, he is the second male companion I fell in love with from the classics. My first love from the classics was IAN CHESTERTON! Coz he was hot and Sarah said that he and Barbara got married.

  • Harry Sullivan was friggin awsome. he reminded me a bit of Ian Chesterton and to a lesser extent Captain jack harkness in that he was the action man of the TARDIS crew whereas the Doctor was the intellectual and his female companion's role varied but was rarely action orientated in the same way

  • I loved Harry! Thanks for posting this... i feel a Doctor Who marathon coming up this weekend at my house...

  • Tom Liz & Ian = greatest tardis crew of all time :)

  • The Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane & Harry proved popular with audiences, however the producers decided to write Harry out after one season because Tom Baker (the youngest actor at the time to play the part) was able to handle all of the action that were originally assigned to Harry as it was assumed that an older actor would be playing the role of the Doctor.

Sadly, it's alluded in "The Sarah Jane Adventures" that Harry is no longer alive - to reflect the passing of actor Ian Marter years earlier.

  • @woohooboy I know there could at least drop a mention cuz the actor of Lan is dead to pus one actor's die there get anther actor which looks close enough why can't there do that?

Harry is still alive in my head

  • @liongirlfc - I think the days of recasting a new actor in a role created by someone else is something producers avoid doing (outside of soaps and of course the lead part in "Doctor Who").......

The way Harry is mentioned in "The Sarah Jane Adventures" is very touching and it's obvious Sarah has a great deal of affection for him. You can hear it in her voice and the sadness in her eyes when she thinks of him.....

  • Harry was great. I was also very glad to read that later on, the production team admitted it was a mistake not to have had him in more stories.

  • Awww, I loved Harry! And Sarah Jane did too; she said so at the end of the SJA episode "Death of the Doctor." I'm glad to find some others that share my love of Harry!

  • When did Ian Marter Pass away then? I think I read somewhere he was 32 - he wasn't so old when he did dr who, so it's very sad if that's true!

  • Ian Marter died in 1986 from a diabetes related heart attack while celebrating his 42nd birthday at home in London.

  • He saved Sarah Jane so many times.. if she'd died .. what for the Doctor..the most underrated of them all..RIP .. Harry..XX

  • R.I.P Ian

  • LOVE Harry. Even though I've barely seen any of the episodes he was in. Though I can already tell how awesome he was. RIP Ian.

Who else will be as awesome as Four? Who will keep up with him? AND! Who can climb rocks like THAT?!!!

    <3 Harry forever.

  • Bravo, Harry was always one of my fav companions, I see him as The Doctor's Watson, he is a doctor after all and though not bright compered to The Doctor - but then who is? - he was no idiot and he was very brave and a decent chap, a proper gentlemen, and of couse all the nice girls love a sailor. I wish Harry had been in more episodes.

  • you didn't include that moment from Robot where he freed Sarah by punching her captor. Or where he arrived at the enemy compound incog in a bowler and fine clothing.

  • Lieutenant-Surgeon Harry Sullivan was not an imbecile! He was courageous, caring, decent and a true gentleman -- just like Ian Marter himself, who was all of these things and more and a fine actor as well.

R.I.P. Ian. You will never be forgotten, nor should you be.

  • Oh lovely! I love Harry, old-worlde courtesy and all... He's such a decent, caring man - plus he's a Doctor (I have a thing for companions who're also Doctors (provided they're not killing THE Doctor - yes, Grace, I'm looking at you!))

  • Oh, I really like Harry, my biggest regret of the character is that he isn't in more episodes.

He was really so nice and a voice of reason but never annoying and yet entertaining, a shame he became a third wheel.

  • who the hell says hes useless. He was one of my fave companions

  • Lol. awesome. I've always liked Harry. He was just a bit third wheel. But hell, what do you get with three wheels? A damn cool tricycle. Generally he was kinda there as a bit of common sense. I think at first he was put in to balance out the 4th doctors more over the top nature since jon pertwee was so practical but then it was discovered it wasn't really needed. Still a great character and a top bloke. Kinda guy you'd go to the pub for a few pints with.

  • I've always liked Harry - he added a nice touch to the pair of Sarah Jane and the Fourth Doctor.

In fact - I've always felt they were one of the best trios they had in the series (Doc , Zoe and Jamie the other favorite of mine).

I agree - shame they wrote out the character, probably because they didn't think he fit in with the group - but he did quite well actually, even if the character was designed with an older Doctor than T. Baker in mind.

  • this guy was a beautiful person... so sad he died b4 i was born... loved harry...

  • I don't know why...but when the music started up I couldn't help but laugh. Don't know what Harry would think about being called a Hero. I think he just considered himself a decent bloke. :)

I agree...Harry was a GREAT companion. I missed him a lot after "The Android Invasion" Wish he could have stayed longer.

So sad that he died so suddenly. I agree...he would have been in the SJA for sure!

  • I loved Harry as a companion. What a shame that he was written out. Personally, I wouldn't have minded being called "old girl" by him. Rest in peace, Ian Marter.

  • Which episode is at 49 seconds with Sarah Jane in white?

  • That's "Pyramids of Mars".

  • Oh, Harry. Oh, Ian. How I loved them both T_T

  • Harry was brillaint, who else would go to hit a Sontaron with a stick. There wasn't a duff episode with him in. I am so glad the writer kicked themselves when they wrote him out, biggest mistake in the shows history. If Ian was still alive I bet he's pop up in Sarah Jane Adventures.

  • I agree, not everything old fashioned should be binned- he was dim but would give his life for his friends- a better message than today's 'my knife is bigga dan yors'.

  • AHEM.. Revenge of the Cybermen was duff. But, he was still good.. though HARRY SULLIVAN IS AN IMBECILE!!!

  • I also love Harry, and you captured him very well, great job! 5/5

  • RIP Ian

  • well, there is a 3rd doctor video that uses this song--I actually think it's better suited for the 3rd than the 4th--the 3rd doctor was really a james bond like figure.

  • I sort of wonder if Larry Nightingale and Sally Sparrow (Blink) aren't tributes to Harry Sullivan and Sarah Jane Smith. When Larry sheilds Sally with his body I thought that's just what Harry would have done. Good video too - I liked Harry Sullivan and every companion shone bright at least once.

  • I don't remember that, guess I'll have to watch it again. But I do agree with everything you said :)

  • Harry is NOT an imbecile, he's AWESOME and WONDERFUL! Sorry, but I miss Ian Marter terribly.

  • I agree - he's not, not one bit. That said, I loved the Doctor's response in that case because I think in that case Harry actually did something imbecilic - in that it could've killed him or the Doctor or both.

  • In "Revenge of the Cybermen," which is on Daily Motion, Harry was trying to unbuckle the harness, which could cause the bomb that the Doctor was wearing to go off and thus kill both of them.

  • @LoverswithCassie Harry did not get a proper goodbye scene with the Doctor, and he sadly faded away.

  • @rojblake82 I think Harry got a decent leaving story in Terror of the Zygons. Harry made his own decision to stay behind. Given the nature of Harry's entry into the TARDIS at the end of ROBOT, it is a good natural end to his Season 12 story arc.

That being said, I DO wish Harry could have returned on alternate stories up thru Season 14, and also likewise wish that Sarah Jane had remained to the end of Season 14, for more Sarah Jane AND Sarah, Harry, Dr#4 stories!

  • @lighthousedreamers yes.... but he is still an imbiecile, the doctor said it so it must be true!

  • Awesome vid! I've only seen a couple of 4th Doctor eps right now, but Harry is already one of my fav companions. I love how respectful and protective he is of Sarah Jane and other women; he's also very noble and just brilliant! If he called me 'old girl/thing,' I'd probably smile or laugh. Men like Harry are as rare as a Sabertooth Tiger these days it seems, rofl! Long live Harry Sullivan!

  • back in the day, i thought sarah might fancy harry but it was always the dr. but i liked harry sullivan very much- i was very sad to read in wikipedia that the actor who had potrayed him passed away from diabetes in the 80's. REST IN PEACE, IAN. yOU'LL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

  • Totally weird In83 or84 This song made think of Doctor Who aswell. Being under ten. I never found out who it was on the radio.

Than again how many hero songs are there

When I was a child in the schoolyard i was the good guy. Evil was the last choice for anybody. But now it's V for Vendetta or Darth Vader.

  • Very good video, great song choice. I had been told a theory that harry was there as eye candy to attract more of a female audience because the Doctor was never chosen for his good looks and the girls needed some good looking guy to watch if they were going to get into doctor who. I don't look at it that way but I know it must work for some (and I like to look at Tom Baker just fine anyway)

  • Wonderful! About time Harry had some love!

  • I actually don't like the song, but this is a great vid! i've only seen 2 eps with him (The Sontaran Experiment, and Genesis Of The Daleks!) but Harry's great!!!

  • hi it whovian39 agen

    go harry!!!

  • We need more men like Harry around these days, even if the Doctor once called him an imbecile :}

Even though Ian Marter died before I was born, I've loved him ever since I clapped eyes on him (shame on me)...

  • Me too. Ian passed away 5 years before I was born. Sadly, I had a boyfriend like Harry, but it didn't work out :( And it's so difficult to find men like Harry; I bet (well like to think) that Ian treated women the same way Harry did. Sorry, I was having a nostalgia attack, lol!

  • Hey, at least you had a boyfriend like Harry... As much as I love my boyfriend, I'm pretty sure Harry would never have drunk a litre bottle of Baileys in one go. xD

  • Comment removed

  • Not a dare at all, he's just a bit of an alcy ;]

Heh, that is pretty funny. I guess he must've been pretty nice to do community work, aye...

  • As Harry would say, "Good show, old thing!!"

  • I want him! He's just adorable, shame Sarah never hooked up with him on screen.

  • More of us men should strive to be as amazing as Harry Sullivan!

  • Agreed, I mean he was a stumble bum. But he's impressive doing it lol. And he is good looking. Even though I don't swing that way.

    Anythings better than fat bastard.

  • That series was the BEST of all of them - Harry was the one little boys (like me) looked up to - glad I'm not alone in appreciating him. God look after Ian.

  • This was fantastic!

  • This is great thank you, you editing is immaculate. Ace choice of music. made me smile fondely with memories

  • best vid eva!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gotta Love Harry Sullivan

It's a Shame Ian Marter isn't with us!

  • harry was briliant :D

  • "HARRY SULLIVAN IS AN IMBECILE!!!!"

  • I might have a go; I'll keep you posted on the attempt.

  • Yes, I feel he was very underrated as a companion. He was never really appreciated as fully as he might have been.

  • aww that's nice

i personally feel Harry was one of the most underrated companions ever, but he is my favourite, apart from Sarah. It's just a shame Ian Marter died so young

  • Aw, good old Harry!

  • Harry was not as developed as he could be, they only hired him so that if they cast an old actor to be the doctor he could do the heroic running and hitting that needed to be done.

Still this era was the best and Harry was one of my favourite companions, love the vid!

  • its a shame he is dead

  • best music vid ever.

harry is my favourite. its a shame ian marter died on his birthday

  • "Where have all the good men gone and where are all the gods." *shot of Sarah and then unconscious Doctor* Brilliant! XD

I absolutely love you for this, Harry is wonderful! And completely underappreciated. He really deserves his own video! *contemplates making one, too* Great job!

  • Thanks! I'm really glad you liked it, I had loads of fun making it to prove my Harry-Hating friend wrong. I'm all for more Harry vids being made, you can never have too many! x

  • I love Harry ^.^

My brother and I were watching Genesis of the Daleks and he called Harry a bitch for not doing what the Doctor told him (stepping away from the land mine) >:(

  • I liked Harry. Wasn't he a doctor in the Royal Navy.

  • Harry was such a lovely chap, and this video truly does him justice! Nice work.

  • i liked harry i wish he had stayed longer.

  • well Done! I like Harry!

  • FANTASTIC! the only words to describe it! go Harry go!!

  • Fabulous combination. I'm also glad that someone finally did a video for Harry. He was an incredible companion...I wish he could comeback. *sighs unhappily*

  • Great vid! Harry could be such a goober at times, but he was a decent chap, lol!

  • Truly an underappreciated companion. Nice tribute, though I would have liked to have seen some footage from his other stories. Robot, Ark, Cybermen and Zygons all had some great Harry stuff in them. Why no clips? The Pyramids clips are also a little out of place since it wasn't a Harry story. But otherwise a great tribute with some beautiful editing. The beginning is my fav.

    Cheers!

  • Glad you liked it! The main reason the other stories aren't in there is because I don't have dvd versions of them (which is the only kind I can put on my computer). I ended up putting Pyramids in to bulk it out a bit. I would love to do a re-mixed version one day with ALL his stories in it!

  • Oh, that was perfect! It's great to see some love for Harry. Harry was awesome!

  • Excellent job! I love Harry, and also agree that he is very underappreciated.

Wonderful job on the editing! It went very well with the music.

oh, and the song was... perfect! I wish I could have rated you even higher than a 5

  • WELL DONE!! lol As a Who-fan from way back in the Tom Baker days ("Who-ites" we used to be called before "Whovian" became the popularly accepted term), I recognized so many scenes from this clip. Excellent job! What a nice twist making the companion the main heroic character. As we say Downunder "Love your work!"

  • I agree. He's very much underappreciated.

  • nice work! Harry was so cool.
