Climate — particularly the amount of radiation received from the sun — typically determines whether a season is the high-yielding season and the low-yielding season.

The low-yielding season is the season with lower attainable yields because of greater cloudiness and less solar radiation. It is often the rainy or monsoon season. The high-yielding season is the season with higher solar radiation and hence higher attainable yields provided irrigation water is sufficient to meet the needs of the rice crop.
