We never really know what asch went through in those years, knowing he had been replaced, knowing his past and future were thrown away. He wanted luke to be stronger than him, so that his life being discarded was not in vain, but everytime luke doubted himself, was like a spit in the face to asch. It's complicated, but thats waht makes asch a complex and interesting character, and hsi contradictions understandable

Aww, Asch. You can see how he doesn't really have anyone to confess things to, and so he ends up lying to himself a lot. The poor guy contradicted himself like, three times in this scene. He's not sure what to feel. In contrast, Luke can turn around and talk to Tear or Guy for advice and feel a little bit better. If Asch had true companions as Luke did, I wonder different things would have been.

I agree too. This scene just makes me think hard about Luke. He is very different.from Asch now, but because the latter was never around to see the transformation, he doesn't believe Luke has changed. He doesn't want to accept the fact that replicas can live their own lives, that they will always be an exact copy of the original and that nothing can change that. But Luke has proven that he can, through the help of friendship, love, remorse, etc. Very moving scene indeed.
