A nasty little man who appealed to the worst in people's fears and prejudices.
He deserves to be remembered as the nasty, hateful little prick he was.
You are uneducated and delusional. Wallace opened up the Conservative movement, leading to Reagan's ascendancy. Leftists like you always say "Racist" because it sufficiently ends all meaningful discussion-like questioning idiot Obama's policies & one is called "Racist." Wallace didn't run on race-he ran on winning the Cold War, states' rights, and a whole host of issues, not race-related. All you can think of to say is "Racist," so that tells everyone what you are obsessed with.
GOV George Wallace's grand plan was to win enough Electoral Votes so that Hubert Humpfrey & Richard Nixon wouldn't win a Majority of the Electoral College & the election would then be sent to the House of Representatives & they would decide who the next President is. He thought the House would pick him but he came up short.
"At a Georgetown dinner party recently, the wife of a leading senator sat next to Gen. Curtis LeMay, chief of staff of the Air Force. He told her a nuclear war was inevitable. It would begin in December and be all over by the first of the year. In that interval, every major American city -- Washington, New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles -- would be reduced to rubble. Similarly, the principal cities of the Soviet Union would be destroyed." 19 July 1961
There is a reason he lost. Sorry, popularists don't win nationally. Palin, I'm talking to you today. You play well among a small group of people, but not the nation. You cost McCain more than you helped in 2008 in the general election. His time didn't come because Nixon was a pragmatist. I'm a liberal, but I know that Nixon was actually not a terrible president. Don't mix up Watergate; he was winning in 1972 either way, so he was doing something right.
God Bless Gov Wallace. I worked for his campaign in 1972 and his views and ideas resonate even today in the Tea Party movement. He was right about so many things. Greatly misunderstood.
I was too young to remember the '68 Campaign but it must have been extremely interesting to follow. You might have hated Wallace or loved him but you NEVER wondered where he stood on an issue and that is something our politicians today lack.
I speak as a northener but if someone like Wallace would come on the scean again I'd vote for him. Folks like Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo remind me of this in some ways. As far as race goes he totaly changed but was never the racist the media made him out to be. Looking at what Nixon did and the disaster of the Carter years America passed on a strong leader. Someone not afraid to take a stand on something, right and wrong, common sense,Law and Order. Not playing people for fools.

Most historians have rated him as such. Not to mention he didn't get re-elected. He supported the idea of Popular Sovereignty which is racist. His successor James Buchanan was even worse
Most historians? Historians don't determine whether a president was good or not. What determines a president's quality is his dedication to his constitutional oath, and his accomplishments.
Popular Sovereignty isn't racist, it's the form of government we have in the United States. Buchanan even worse? What drivel are you using as a source? Buchanan understood the constitution, and that it is a limiting document in its nature, that all powers not delegated are reserved, including secession.
1. Abraham Lincoln 2. Theodore Roosevelt 3. Ronald Reagan 4. James Monroe 5. George Washington
6. Thomas Jefferson 7. Dwight D. Eisenhower 8. George H. W. Bush 9. Ulysses S. Grant 10. Richard Nixon 11. Gerald Ford 12. James Garfield 13. Chester Arthur 14. James Madison 15. Grover Cleveland 16. Franklin Delano Roosevelt 17. Harry Truman 18. Lyndon Baines Johnson 19. George W. Bush 20. William McKinley
Abraham Lincoln? He advocated precisely what James Monroe, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison opposed for their entire lives.
Teddy Roosevelt? You mean the guy who supported invading and killing tens of thousands of Filipinos simply because he wanted the U.S. to be an "imperial" power?
Grant? The absolutely failed president with a tremendously corrupt administration?
Nixon? The liberal republican who created the EPA, expanded welfare, and resigned in disgrace?
Lousy Presidents: 30. John Tyler 31. Millard Fillmore 32. Warren G. Harding 33. James Knox Polk 34. Benjamin Harrison 35. Calvin Coolidge 36. Franklin Pierce 37. James Buchanan 38. Jimmy Carter 39. Barack Obama 40. Woodrow Wilson 41. Rutherford B. Hayes 42. Andrew Johnson
Most Lousy Presidents: 1. Franklin Delano Roosevelt 2. Woodrow Wilson 3. William Henry Harrison 4. Abraham Lincoln 5. Benjamin Harrison 6. Theodore Roosevelt 7. Jimmy Carter 8. George W. Bush 9. William McKinley 10. Rutherford B. Hayes
I agree with you on Wilson, Benjamin Harrison, Carter, and Hayes. FDR, GW Bush and McKinley I am at odds with so I can see why you are not crazy about them. WH Harrison is just outside the bottom 30-42 presidents. Lincoln and TR I don' think I could change my mind. You only listed your Lousy, who would be your top 20 I'm curious
6. George Washington-for refusing the expand government beyond the clear language of the Constitution, and for leaving for us the wise charge to mind our own freedom, and to not intervene in other countries around the world.
7. Ronald Reagan, for attempting to restore to the federal government its constitutional limitations, and by recognizing that the U.S. is not the world's policeman.
8. James Monroe-for conceiving of the Monroe Doctrine, guarantying American security and free trade.
9. John Tyler-for refusing to heed the sirens calling for American war against Mexico, and for preserving peace, prosperity, and the free union of American States.
10. Andrew Johnson-for refusing to allow unconstitutional and vindictive actions to proceed unchecked by radical republicans, for his willingness to defend the constitution in the face of threats of removal from office, and for his dedication to fundamental principles of good, free, and just government.
The Federal Union was created by the voluntary association of free and independent States, which limited the federal government by giving it a written constitution, and by retaining to themselves the residium of all ungranted authority. Lincoln transformed this federal republic into a centralized nation-state at the cost of 750,000 deaths...
The problem with Popular Sovereignty in that case was it was used on racial means. Popular Sovereignty is not always Constitutional. It depends the in which it is being used. We could use popular sovereignty to have someone executed for no reason. By your logic that would be Consitutional. Mass Genocide could be Constitutional then if it was chose through Popular Sovereignty. Popular Sovereignty is a good thing, but can't be used to deny human rights otherwise it is unconstitutional.
Thats why Pierce was a lousy President. Buchanan sat idley by while the country was split into. He is a racist for thinking slaves are property non citizens. Sorry, but I can't stand by someone with views like that.
Are you aware that President Lincoln offered an original 13th Amendment which guaranteed that slavery WOULD NEVER be abolished in any State in which it existed?
Popular Sovereignty IS our form of government. It IS the PEOPLE who empower and grant the States their present police powers, and which grant through them to the federal government their limited, constitutionally enumerated powers.
To use popular sovereignty to execute someone would be a Bill of Attainder, and would be most unconstitutional. Popular Sovereignty, the idea that the people are sovereign, is one of the fundamental building blocks of American liberty and free government, perhaps second only to private property rights in its importance. Popular Sov undergirds the constitution, not the other way around.
Yes, the people are sovereign. But NOT the people in the aggregate. The people of the individual States are sovereign. We are not a national democracy. We are 50 democracies.
Common sense, in your view, being a synonym for demagoguery, populism, white supremacy and aggressive war tactics. It's no surprise Wallace and Lemay only carried the Deep South. In any case, the Wallace/LeMay ticket was a travesty.
Are you that ignorant to say such stupid things.Yes,he was a populist, but for all people. He also wanted to win the war in VIETNAM or get out.You have no idea what common sense means.!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 10 million votes in 1968.Are these voters all supremacists???
Deg. 1: Take a look at where Wallace won... The Deep South, the place where supremacists were still reeling from the 1964 Civil Rights Act which ended segregation. 2: Humphrey and Nixon too both wanted to win the war in Vietnam or get out 3: I believe, as the state results show, the majority of Wallace supporters were indeed white supremacists. The remainding consisted largely of 'white backlash'. In essence, Wallace was the white man's candidate, yes.
The Civil Rights Act didn't end segregation, get your facts straight. The CRA only overturned private individuals freedom of association, freedom of property, and freedom of speech. You're talking about a law which clearly is unconstitutional which forces individuals to associate on their own property with people they do do wish to associate with, and forbids them to speak peacefully on issues they believe in. The CRA is a travesty to all good and free government, despite it's best intentions.
Wallace did recent a decent number of Voters in some places in the North too, like Chicago I think he did a pretty good 3rd place show from what I remember reading about it
WALLACE TOLD IT LIKE IT WAS REGARDLESS OF WHO DIDN'T LIKE TO HEAR IT. WE NEED SOMEONE LIKE THAT TODAY, INSTEAD OF WHO WE GOT obamma. WALLACE FOUGHT BLACK EXTREMISTS, COMMUNISM, & LIBERALS. THE BIG 3 EVILS IN THE WORLD AT THE TIME, AGAIN, WALLACE WAS ERRONEOUSLY LABELED A RACIST BECAUSE HE DID NOT SUFFER FROM "WHITE GUILT" AN AFFLICTION THAT MANY BLACKS WISH TO KEEP GOING EVEN THOUGH NO ONE ALIVE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SLAVERY, & MUST ALSO RECOGNIZE BLACKS SOLD OTHER BLACKS AS SLAVES ORIGINALLY.
very very true, many want to forgget that,. wallace was not racist, but he did the will of his constituents, most were segregationists and he supported that
No one alive is responsible for slavery, but people alive totday and especially at the time of Wallace were/are responsbile for the domestic terror tha came after slavery which included lynchings, segregation, harassment, discrimination, racism, police brutality, theft, rape, spying, spreading drugs, AIDS, crime in the way of no jobs and introducing illegal opportunities, making us look bad on TV and movies, only alowing us sports and entertainment - you name it. So leave slavery excuse alone!
If people deserve retribution for wrong doing. Then I guess I better sue every kid that picked on me, bullied me, and tormented me through my school years. But the truth is, I took what options I have and I have surpassed them. You need to take what you have an advance yourself. The governemt shouldn't let these happen to people, but they have since gone along way to stop. People growing up in the 60s and prior definitely needed some programs to balance things.
I was born in the 1980s and since them discrimination for the most part is gone the way side. The government has made it too easy for someone to get sued for doing, so I think it's great. The problem is many people choose not to do everything in their power to succeed. This country is found opportunities that we can all achieve based upon our own talents. The Government is here to make sure our rights are protected in achieving these goals that is the government's only role in it.
Discrimination is not gone! It is just quieter now. Racists realized that they cannot be outward racists anymore, so they get slick. That is YOUR interpetation of the govrnemnt's role. If the gov did not control things, then we would not need laws. You so-called conservatives are just anarchists. All of you are lead by the Jew who already took over this country as many come from Russia! They used the weaknesses of the US (racism, drugs, sex, religion) to take over.
My parents voted for George Wallace in 1968. They loved him. They're ashamed to admit it now, however. They voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and are very proud of that fact. They've grown, as has much of America. The old conservatives who loved people like Nixon, Reagan and Wallace are dying out. I'm glad to see we're moving forward. It's a much better America.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If you was black you wouldn't think Wallace was so great. Especially if you was being strung up for lookin cross eyed at a pregnant 12 year old white tramp.
With the exception of Theodore Roosevelt running as a Progressive in 1912 who received 88 electoral votes, Wallace received 49, the second highest for a third party candidate. From a popular vote perspective Roosevelt and Perot
When General LeMay first became George Wallace's running mate in 1968, the Vietnam Conflict was raging, and when asked for his thoughts on it, General LeMay said he would "bomb North Vietnma back into the Stone Age."
McCain is NOT stirring up racism. Are some people supporting his prejudicedÉ Sure but McCain himself is NOT racist!
Everytime McCain goes to disagree with Obama he starts with a monologue heaping praise on Obama`s intellect and good intentions. Nobody does that when referring to an opposing political candidate.
Look we need to get over this concept that opposing Barak Obama means you`re racist. Obama`s a politician with stated views. Do you think he`s gonna go unopposed
It is extremely difficult for candidates without a "D" or "R" to get on the ballot in all 50 states. This was a major accomplishment in 1968 by George Wallace.
Stupid rednecks. Always voting for the worst examples of humanity.

Conservatives like Wallace? You're not familiar with Barry Goldwater and Lyndon B. Johnson and their respective support for civil rights are you?

If you was black you wouldn't think Wallace was so great. Especially if you was being strung up for lookin cross eyed at a pregnant 12 year old white tramp.

I believe that's the best a third party's pretty much done in an election

With the exception of Theodore Roosevelt running as a Progressive in 1912 who received 88 electoral votes, Wallace received 49, the second highest for a third party candidate. From a popular vote perspective Roosevelt and Perot
(1992) are the highest

When General LeMay first became George Wallace's running mate in 1968, the Vietnam Conflict was raging, and when asked for his thoughts on it, General LeMay said he would "bomb North Vietnma back into the Stone Age."

Well he did repent. Something that McCain has not done so far, he is still stirring up racism/
astepup 3 years ago
McCain is NOT stirring up racism. Are some people supporting his prejudicedÉ Sure but McCain himself is NOT racist!
Everytime McCain goes to disagree with Obama he starts with a monologue heaping praise on Obama`s intellect and good intentions. Nobody does that when referring to an opposing political candidate.
Look we need to get over this concept that opposing Barak Obama means you`re racist. Obama`s a politician with stated views. Do you think he`s gonna go unopposed

George Wallace was a great man.

Without Wallace Nixon would have won a landslide in 1968.

It is extremely difficult for candidates without a "D" or "R" to get on the ballot in all 50 states. This was a major accomplishment in 1968 by George Wallace.
