  • The most advanced car ever built? Bullshit, The new Elantra has a better drag coefficient, and it's wasn't even a multi-million dollar project like the volt.

  • inside and outside of this car look so ugly. looks like a weird japanese girl's car.

also, i can't imagine the next time you take this car to maintenance and the dealer tells you to replace the battery. *cha ching! $x000.00 gone.

  • i didnt know this car was a hybrid, i always thought it was a plug in electric. can sombody answer me why nobody has thought of a rotary hybrid? i dont know if its a good idea or not but it seems like sombody should look into it.

  • @thatciggaweed Rotary engines are known for bad gas mileage and for sometimes being down right unreliable. They are good for performance, but that's about it.

  • I'm an engineer (like J.F, J.F is an engineer?) and I'm a geek.. not that interested.

Well, I suppose it's kinda nice that someone took the Prius idea and got it right.. but it's still slow and boring.

Should have talked more about the drive system.. but then you don't have any engineers on the FLD team.

  • I think the best part of this car is the inside. The dashboard displays are entirely digital not analog. Manufacturers can provide updates, they displays can change to the driver, change to the enivronment, change to the driving style. Then it integrates with your phone to do more than play music. I thought this car was shit, before but based on the technology alone its pretty damn cool.

  • Oh no, he belongs to the camp of people who must say "suposebly"

  • So many things said... The important part missed though. The Chevy Volt is a platform for the future and the reason is that it is an electric drive car with an on-board generator. Currently it has a gasoline generator but future models can use other types of technology like a hydrogen fuel-cell generator or a jet engine generator or a Tesla generator without having to redesign the whole drive system. Other hybrids are not so changeable and one day will just be obsolete.

  • @shai32 thouth speaketh the truth! Hail! :DD

Surprised that you are the only one to mention this. Yeah, this is perhaps the most important thing about the Volt. It leaves room for further development. Chevy can (and probably will) use this drivetrain for many many years into the future.

  • Now make it $20K, otherwise it's not even saving you money on gas compared to Civic.

  • whats this? no bad things about a toyota prius wannabe??

  • i get it... electric car with a lot of positives. the only problem is that nobody wants an electric car. there is a bold statement coming from all dealers wanting better fuel efficient cars but the truth is that consumers don't want it.

  • @Marshmallowrex he was getting 66...

  • @Sid203 Your an idiot 2! You don't wanna support the u s economy move out! You idiot buy cars made in other countries then Turn around and complain about the economy! Idiots!

  • @speedyboi94 you are speaking the truth, i tell this to al the idiots hating on the American cars that shaped our society. MAD RESPECT!!!!

  • @Nairb945 It's called supporting the u s economy you idiot! Not the german economy!

  • this so called car is more like a soggy ham sandwich

    who wants one

  • What kind of engineer is J.F. (I'm guessing EE or ME) and why is he working for FLD if he's an engineer? Good review, though!

  • Also,I have been able to test drive one of these cars and have driven a prius before, and his car would easily beat a prius in a drag race(not that it matters)and for someone like my wife, she could drive the car everyday and I would say with how

Many Miles she goes, she would be able to go like 2 months without having to use any fuel.where a prius just doesn't have quite enough range to do the same.I would buy a volt maybe next year when the dealers take off their mark ups

  • @ Jan,the car is not a hybrid car and in fact is all electric in the fact that the gas engine does NOT drive The vehicle,it acts as an electric generator that keeps the battery charged and powering the electric drive motor.and why would you want a "German engineered" car?I don't undertstand how it being a European car would make something better than what we can make right here in the USA.

  • thats what I have been waiting for -'thumbs up for Volt'

  • this just feels like a commercial FLD, next time can you please review TWO cars that are in direct competition instead of one.

  • you didn't include any negatives about the car...you took on side and stuck with it. Your saying you even like the blacked out rear truck? or the $33,000 price tag? You could get a Golf TDI or Audi TDI for the same money and get a german engineered car with 40+ MPG.

  • @NAIRB945 ha. the volt has been enginered on a similar level as the veyron as far a r&d and design. "german engineering" has nothing next to american engineering when american eningeers are allowed to do what they want.

  • 1898

The German Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, at age 23, built his first car, the Lohner Electric Chaise. It was the world's first front-wheel-drive. Porsche's second car was a hybrid, using an internal combustion engine to spin a generator that provided power to electric motors located in the wheel hubs. On battery alone, the car could travel nearly 40 miles. Doesn't seem that we've come that far...

  • Well.. "car of the year" in USA... Its kind of a short list isnt it. Here is what Motortrend wrote about it -

How GM "Lied" About The Electric Car

The Chevy Volt has been hailed as General Motors' electric savior. Now, as GM officially rolls out the Volt this week for public consumption, we're told the much-touted fuel economy was misstated and GM "lied" about the car being all-electric.

    /jalopnik. com /#!5661051/how-gm-lied-about-the-electric-car

There are hundreds of these articles.

  • @Dalit5 ow right!! i guess the reason why most foreigners never understand US politics and laws is because of state and federal laws that gets kind of confusing.LOL but do these cars get subsidies or is the funding just for research and developement for the cars.

you know what, i think we're getting into a good deep descusion about american politics XD.

  • "Not ment to handle" is an excuse only americans use about their cars. Handle is what a car does unless it was built by people that didnt give a shit.

Fact is... Inorder to score Obamas crisis package they had to promise something spectacular. They promised 300 something mpg and when its here, it delivers less mpg than European conventional gas hatchbacks. Even Motortrend is calling it a fraud. In January they spent another 14 million tax dollars advertising it but only sold 321 cars in USA.

  • Is it just me, or is it really annoying when someone says "supposebly"?

    It's supposedly!!

  • @Dalit5 LOL i think you just got me into this. anyways the ways you said it i guess the budget for the Volt came from different taxes and not one specific tax hence the percentage of taken out from the revenew of that tax is pretty small. therefor when it come to the consumers it looks like they're only paying 1 dollar or two in grocaries for VAT but realistically they're paying almost 50% of thier income to indirect taxes and other taxes. this is what i understand from what you said.

  • What a piece of shit

  • ... but a $25k vw clean diesel easily gets 60+ mpg...

  • $41,000 + maintenance and repair costs that will easily exceed those of some supercars ... no thanks. If I want good mileage, I'll stick with a VW Golf Diesel for $20,000 and safe the other $21,000 or buy some nice used weekend car for it ... a nice 90's 911 or Corvette or something.

  • @ratmtbola you realize that an electric motor has exactly 1 (one) moving part? and a deisel requires urea every 2k miles?

  • @EatmyDust1311 What are you talking about? For one, it's 2011 and not 1950. Diesels do NOT need urea every 2k miles hahaha. And then ... just because an electric motor only has one moving part doesn't mean that it's more reliable. In fact most failures in cars today are ELECTRIC failures. There's SO much more to go wrong in an electric car than in a conventional one. And most importantly, reparing an electric car is MUCH more expensive.

  • @ratmtbola repairing*

  • @Marshmallowrex since, spelled "since" since the beginning of the word..... import lover fail

  • @Marshmallowrex wow your telling me that you actually think honda makes good cars?? something is wrong with you, shitty gas mileage, shitty sport models, shitty truck (if you can call that tampon on wheels ridgeline a truck) shitty mini vans, shitty everything. Every car company except for maybe chrysler has honda beat in ever car it makes. go get shitty gas mileage in your old ass civic. i'll take a new focus that puts the civic to shame in power, mpg and looks.

  • @matman142 but does your new focus cost $500-1000 to buy? nope, but old ass hondas do, and get decent mileage. so while youre still paying off your $15-20k focus, i bought the car with cash and am still getting 30-40 mpg. theyre also chick magnets, surprisingly. at least my 94 civic is. now im not saying the focus is crap or that youre wrong, im just saying relax man. old hondas are cheap and reliable, which is good

  • @whatthehallbetch okay i see your point, yeah if you want a cheap reliable car then yes honda has the upper hand, i have to disagree with you on the chick magnet thing though but thats just me, but i am talking about new cars, would you take a 2012 civic over a 2012 focus? civic still only gets 36 mpg highway while the focus is rated at 40 and the civic makes over 20 hp less. idk but honda has gone downhill in my opinion

  • @matman142 oh yeah, they suck now. but im talking about when they were still making good vehicles. through the 90's and into the early 00's before they went downhill and ford stepped their game up. and women love my civic for some reason, i dont know why. i used to own a '94 mustang and it didnt turn heads nearly as much as my '94 civic does

  • @whatthehallbetch your boasting about the reliability of a civic, when on your own channel you have vids of your civic that is mis-firing and leaking fuel.

  • @Inv4derxXx but thats because it was abused by the previous owner. i got the stuff fixed now and it runs great. considering i had a '94 mustang that was babied its entire life, and tons of shit was still going wrong with it, this honda, which looks like the guy had driven the absolute piss outta it, was allowed to misfire a bit, considering it was running the original spark plugs

  • Very nicely done in 5 minutes. I went 44.4 miles today on the battery with weather from 45-65 degrees. With a 9.3 gallon gas tank and about 40 miles per gallon you can get well over 300 miles after going 40 miles on the battery. I did just that buying the car in NY and driving it back to IL. This car is very smooth and fun (SPORT mode and (L)ow gear for max regen braking).

  • @scottf200 Good luck with your Volt!

  • @PhsRecon haha yeah that is very true, good point! but i still would rather ave the volt...just kidding, that would be soo dumb

  • lol, 66.6 mpg 2:25

  • So cursed at 2:32 lol

  • Still rather drive a diesel BMW, VW, or Mercedes

  • When are we going to see a motorcycle review on FLDetours? I can't speak for other motorcyclists, but I know I would enjoy that. =D

  • You guys just drove through my hometown of Piermont NY!

  • GM takes a bailout builds a hybrid, then takes another government loan to pay back the bailout and calls it all good. B.S. they still owe the American Taxpayer only now it's called a "LOAN". GM should have went the way of Pan AM.

  • @duleym you sir are very ignorant

  • Nice good review.

I think I would like to see how the Volt will do on weather like the last winter we had here in the north-east (I'm not bashing) I just like to know. What's the '0 to 60 of this thing?

  • 66.6 mpg

    the mileage of the beast

  • @decamerondix lol that;s right

  • Sounds like you get a lot of road noise in the car.

  • @scruffy412 but zero engine noise...

  • Thumbs up If you might need a Led nut shield

  • JF, the wide angle lens is good for the interior shot, but using it for the exterior shots looks silly. The image is really distorted. Get a $100 50mm f1.8.

  • The problem is the price, all these companies are dragging their heels b/c they really don't want to invest in alternate fuel vehicles. These are their feel good, rep builder cars. Just do like Hyundai study the tech and and apply it at a realistic cost for the consumer but also make all engines very fuel efficient to start w/. I've seen the volt.. It's worth 25-30G's w/ excluding the 7G's tax credit. Got what GM's over charging us. Their tech is really old.

  • "the most advanced vehicle ever built" whoa! nice accord euro headlights... >3<

  • Even with the $7,500 tax credit, it still costs about $10,000 MORE than a Prius. Trust me, I wouldn't buy either car, but no matter what the Volt does, it's not worth 10K more than a Prius.

  • @Burbio how much did the first cell phone cost? you know, the one that took 10 hours to recharge, only made and recieved calls, and weighed 2.5 pounds?

  • first FLDetours with NO negative points on a car!!! Is this a Chevy sponsored review?

  • @boy638 well maybe there was no negative issues to address.

against American made cars or gm itself? huh?

  • @boy638 WRONG he said it dosent handle good... lol

  • @boy638 i think he was rating it compared to its competitors, which is why he was so enthused, but u r right, I'm sure the car isn't flawless.

  • *At the click of a button" ?? That's a touch sceen you've got there my friend! ^_^ haha!

  • If I paid for it, where's mine at?

  • so for all the americans out there. is the volt worth your taxes?

  • @wakojako49 might be the only Chevy product that's worth our taxes=/

  • cool review, but can u Plz stop playing this annoying soulless apple commercial music. Thanks

  • Don't wanna silence in my car, i'm not 50.:)

  • Do you hear that? NO I DON'T! IT'S SILENCE!

  • CLICK of a button or TAP on the screen???

  • 2:14 Those screens look pretty lame

  • have a twin test between a Prius and the Volt!

  • Is it true that the new Hyundai Elantra has a lower drag coefficient than this?

  • As an anti-green-car person, I was hoping you would bag this car out.

  • one huge factor that the Volt has over the Prius, is that the Volt looks a lot better then the Prius.

  • @GC84ever the biggest difference between the Prius and the Volt...... no douchebag factor

  • just get a motorcycle......

  • Correction: It's a horrible car. It's good transportation, but a car is more then just a to b. So as I said. It's a terrible car. It's just good transportation.

  • we all pay for it and we dont have one in the driveway wtf

  • could it be...that AMERICAN auto makers are finally getting serious on e-autos?

All I can say is....WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG??!!

  • The tech in this car is raw! It will be super FOXY when they make the converj. Zero emission Caddy? Sign me up.

  • Really liked the review! Wonder if GM would make a mix of alternatives, i.e. runs on all 3, hydrogen, plug-in, or even gas/diesel that would be insane!

  • When it runs on the generator, does the battery still work so it works like a hybrid? And also, how powerful is the generator?

  • @TornTech the volt is an extended range electric vehicle. the difference between this and a hybrid is that in a hybrid some of the power from the gas engine charges the battery while some of the power drives the wheels. with this the drive is 100% electric and the gas engines sole purpose is to charge the battery via running a generator. i hope this is helpful :)

  • @4itstym No i kinna knew that lol. I mean when the electric is out, is the car just as powerful?

  • ANDROID!!!!!

  • Dude people bitch about there even being a FLDetours, and now i come onto this video and theres people asking for more.

I guess there are just multiple audience markets for FLD now

  • I just heard their was a Recall on these for their steering wheels comeing undone while driving. Hows it handle without the steering wheel? lol great review keep the vids comeing

  • i think JF should have reviewed this car

  • any one else remember that two years ago chevy was saying this car was gonna go 300 miles without using a drop of gas what happened to that

  • 66.6 ... The Mileage of the beast!

  • @Marshmallowrex ever heard of the geo metro? thats gm and that got upwards of 55 mpg. you fail

  • @matman142 we had a geo way back in the day and it didnt even get close to 55.... maybe 43-45 on a 99% highway cycle...

  • @DaBluedude100 i highly doubt anyone drives 99% of their miles on the highway, and still, 45 mpg is remarkable even today with the current civic only rated at what? 36 MPG?? fan boys are just so irritating

  • @matman142 61km highway .5km city one way. Basically you can coast to where we had to go from the highway. But yeah civics are long dead to me. And my figure is for metric gallons which are larger than us gallons. The new fiesta is pretty good but I'd rather just have the mustang.

  • @DaBluedude100 its nice to see someone on here that isn't a close minded idiot, ford is making some incredible vehicles and i completely 100% would take a mustang over any new honda or new chevy, besides the corvette

  • just buy diesel. goodness me.. americans will never get it.. no offense.

  • @minibus1351 diesel and gas = the same here in america haha

  • @minibus1351 diesel is 3c/l more expensive in western Canada today. and we dont get many diesel cars out here yet other than some naziwagon...

  • not the best fld tour ive ever seen..

  • chevy for life

  • the batteries do more damage to the environment than a hummer just from its production. also, those batteries dont last forever and they cost a lot to replace, plus youll have the environment thing again. battery powered cars arent the answer, but id say biodiesel is a great alternative cause its damage to the environment is actually near nothing. biofuels is an all around better system. i dont believe in global warming, but check out a documentary called fuel... youll learn a lot

  • nice shoes haha, best driving shoes out there haha thats what i use lol

  • "I'm not even that angry that my tax dollars went towards it." That speaks volumes

  • must be the devil's car, getting 66.6mpg...sneaky chevy

  • rich p is not very well spoken

  • Ill give a shit right on the dash board.Oh and the most advanced vehicle ever built. Its a copy cat, Prius any day for me. cheaper to buy and own. Volt = Garbage... idiot asshole trying to sell me this shit....peace

  • all I have to say is Tesla, longer range but higher cost of ownership and the vehicles cost more as well.....Tesla is a pure electric car company and that is what they specialize in so they have the longest range electric vehicles on the market to my knowledge. ( Just electric, no gas )

  • @wilburfudd Take it around a track a few times and see how long it lasts. It's range depends solely on how you drive it.

  • i dont see how people are hating on this its better than anything else out there

  • Good thing Rich tested the Volt and not Leo, he would have been trying to do burn outs and would have track tested it lol.

As always FLDetours has put out another good review

  • I wish it was 5 seats. Other than that, I really like the car

  • i think this car is stupid our future is hydrogen and diesel, none of this electric hybrid bs, only when we stop using coal to make electricity will any electric car make sense.

  • @nikothecrazygreek Hydrogen is a future technology. It isn't possible to viably commercialize hydrogen automobiles.

Things to note: Some countries heavily depend on natural sources/occurrences (geysers) to power their electrical grid. Many states in the US (along the west coast) depend on natural gas and hydro to power their electrical grid.

Gotta look at where you live, and what makes sense. Remember that energy doesn't all come from the same place.

  • @asdfgoogle Hydrogen could be commercialized for automobiles but the problem is storing it and it would get pricey to make fast. Most common ways we get hydrogen today is through a propane burning process or through electrolysis... both of which defeat the purpose...

  • @DaBluedude100 So, it can't really be commercialize now, can it? lol.

    Sorry, I just had to!!

  • this is descusting a car we have to pay for and we will drive we are slaves

  • With all this 666 talk, maybe GM is going to Hell?

  • 66.6mpg, this car is the devil on gas :P

  • he didnt mention the cabin noise thats constantly present

  • @iFumoffu 66.6 dB?

  • @iFumoffu Wasn't the cabin noise the road/tire noise? lol.

  • Cmon Chevy, build a good looking car.

  • most innovative car, no. Try a Hyundai Elantra that gets 40mpg on a gas engine but only costs $15k. Or maybe an Audi Q7 TDI that is almost 3 x faster than this car 0-60 but gets 32mpg highway. Lets look at facts, only 300 of these were sold first month. Anyone can make something technological but its only innovative when there is a demand for it and it changes lives. great car, but price ruins it. simple as that.

  • wtf, did i just watch a commercial?

  • @isreal194 sometimes there are just good cars. Seems like Detroit can finally do that now after 40 years of doo doo.

  • 66.6 MPG THAT SHOWS HOW EVIL GM is fuckn greety bastards selling to down to the oil companies, and to FLD please dont brind me this shit i want to see a tesla roadster or the upcoming model s , or at least the leaf , this shit aint electric thank you very much

  • 66.6 mpg. =O

  • I actually enjoyed this review on the chevrolet volt... good review FLD

  • 66.6 mpg.... the volt must be the devil

  • Comment removed

  • Yay FLDetours! Rich P is cool

I wish the Volt had a wagon version, manual transmission, bigger windows, and could use E85

  • ....and then the steering wheel falls off.

  • @PhsRecon the porsche is going to be like 800,00....

  • FINALLY, a decent FLDtours

  • I think this My first time I disliked a video from FLD. you sound very biased Rich..!! $40000, for:25-50 miles(battery)? capable?drives better?,fun?smart phone gimmick do you really gave this thumbs up? Did you mean that?

  • I drove a Volt at the local auto show earlier this year, and I rather liked it. Then I drove a Toyota Camery Hybrid, which felt like I was driving my xbox, only with the inertia. The Steering was so light it was scary on the Toyota and the peddles were more or less the same way. Im used to driving a Honda Civic, which is awesome, but If I had to buy an electric car I would totally buy the Volt, because it is just as good as a 98 Civic... Well almost.

  • i just saw one today in NYC qnz, it looked like a pontiac from the back and this thing is pretty small, like a civic

  • Why are there so few FLDetours? Can we have more please?

  • @camronm77 money most likely a lot of these shows don'[t make much

  • bhp?

    Tech review? :P

  • It will cost 33K ONLY if you have $7500 worth of tax to pay. If you owe $0 in tax for example, it will cost 41k

  • Let's drop a LS7 in it!

  • If you can plug it in at work then your charge is free! I bet employers will have policies against personal electricity usage soon.

  • Still not gonna buy it

  • In the Descrip i thought it said R.I.P chevy volt

  • On the other hand we have the Cruze With a Steering Wheel Falling off. Ya. No thanks CHEVY! youtube.com/watch?v=f2_b4V6C4aM&feature=player_embedded

  • since the gaps are so tight, is there really little road noise?

  • diesel>hybrid

  • @cameronk7 why not diesel+hybrid?

  • @bottomlayer that would be the best!

I'm pretty sure europe has some diesel hybrids. too bad the US probably wont ever get them..

  • Please just use a Diesel. It's much better.

  • all hybrids are fail...u dont save that much compared to the extra money you pay upfront...those batteries are more harmful for the environment than any gas powered car

  • Please dont test gay and lame cars.

  • Its not that advanced. My SAE team is making a hybrid drivetrain too. We have a tiny fraction of the budget.

  • @captBLOTTO What college do you attended? I hope Columbia's SAE class get on track.

  • I have an urge to bring up Golf 1.6 tdi, 50 mpg, better handling etc. And that is just a normal car...

  • @D0M1N8R1x 66.6 mpg!

  • Boring car all around

  • I'm still extremely happy with my 2001 Insight. It's light, handles very well due to the stiff all aluminum chassis and it gets 55 miles per gallon driving in the hills and mountains of Southern California. Best of all it's paid off and Honda just replaced the battery for free. Now that gas prices are skyrocketing again. I like it even more. 10 bucks a week on gas even now. :)

  • @TheLostSurveyor nice car!

I just wish they made the old Insight's body and chassis (and even the new CRZ and Insight) available as a non-hybrid and sell it as a CRX. or something

Do you have manual or automatic transmission?

  • @bottomlayer Thanks. It's not stock however. I've added a Magnaflow exhaust, Monster cool air intake, wide, low profile tires on light five spoke alloys. I also dynamatted the whole thing and put in an Alpine system. I drive a manual of course. I hate automatics. Even the paddle shift version I tested on the CRZ. I liked the looks of the thing but the mpg is for shite.
