  • Beautiful.

  • Thanks for "taking the Vow of Poetry" Baxter! I always enjoy your work. Here's another favorite of mine by one of your esteemed colleagues.

  • may my beautiful dog harley rest in peace. i miss you my girl, i wish you never had to go. you were a great friend to me, and always protected me. hope there's plenty of room for you to play in heaven

  • now that's a real truck

  • WOW - I have a 15 yr old border collie mix that I am trying to make as comfortable as possible in his old years...your words made me cry...the day is coming...I know. But you expressed everything I feel.....thank you for helping me appreciate his last few months (I shall not say days....he surprises me with his soul!) THANK YOU SO MUCH & know your dog has plenty of my dog angels to romp with....a lab, a rott, a chow...a Heinz 57....all rescues, all glad to meet you!

  • That moustache.....

  • Thanks Baxter, I've had a few good friends like yours, RIP Katy, Bell & Cassie, you three made this cowboy's job a lot easier, and a heck of a lot funnier!

  • May your buddy RIP. We know how you feel; thanks for reminding folks there is no such thing as 'just a dog.' What a sweet and loving memorial.

  • Thanks for this, I will be putting my Lab Noah down next week There is nothing like the love of a dog.

  • Love this Tribute. My 3 boys were half aussie/half poodle. We rode thru the woods with them running beside me. The last one tried to stay...he died at 16 in my bed.

I said, I'll be right back, going to get coffee.........I think he jumped out to go with me.

  • lovely tribute ! Landfrau from Germany

  • love it thanks for sharing!

  • Baxter, thank you for putting into words what many of us feel but don't know how to say properly. I'm sure more than a few tears have been shed at the viewing of this video...

  • You said it far better than I could. I was blessed with a great dog for 15 years, and just lost him last week. Your poem fits him well. He taught me so much.

  • You are an angel!

  • I had a dream once about my dog. He had been dead a few weeks. I dreamed that he talked to me like a person. It wasn't weird though or funny though. He didnt move his mouth or anything, it was like he came to me in a dream like they god did to prophets. He talked like how I imagine he would if he could. He told me how he just got old and he was hurting and his time had come. He talked about how he loved the family and he talked about times we had. It eased the hurt I felt . My one and only dog.

  • I cxouldn't put it better but you gotta check out Jimmy Stewart's 'Tribute to Bo' on Johnny Carson's tonight show on YouTube.com

  • tears ..in my eyes ...

  • Thanks for sharing your fine words and letting everyone know how you feel about your best companion. My emotions run as deep as my love for my own pets. Peace

  • This is the best video I have heard on Youtube as far a remembering a pet goes.

  • How the hell can two people not like this!!!??? Damn Haters!!!

  • Lost my dog over the week-end. This really hit home. Thanks Baxter.

    Good to see you here!

    Good wishes from Cushing Oklahoma.....

  • Nice talk Baxter. I enjoy all of your work. I just don't trust people who don't have dogs. I think there's something wrong with them. Hope to meet you one of these days, maybe run into to you at Mike's auction there in Benson. I live in Silver City now rather than Tombstone, so don't get over there much any more, even though my daughter still lives in Tombstone.

  • I wonder did you send the dog off to be "humanely slaughtered" when the dogs time came, or did you PROPERLY euthanize him as you would any animal you had bonded with.....and didnt intend to eat.

  • Great vid! Sweet pup looks like my sweet Aussie. Best dogs in the world IMO

  • Beautiful, Can't wait to met ya all on the other side of Rainbow Bridge.

  • Beautiful tribute to an old friend. Thanks for uploading.

  • That really hit home. Thanks for sharing.

  • Thank you. I lost my 16 year old dog today. Much appreciated.

  • Absolutely beautiful tribute.

  • been reading his stuff in magazines for years this is the first time I actualy saw and heard him. amazing thing thing is baxter sounds and looks exactly like I always pictured him.

  • Baxter you made an old Cowboy cry....as much as your Buckskin Mare did,Thanks Pard

  • We adopted a dachshund 3 years ago when he was 7 years old. He was too old too use for breeding anymore and needed a loving home. He is the best dog ever! He barks at strangers and protects whoever he is sitting with. He is losing his teeth and cant 'hold it' all night anymore. He is our first dog. I own cats but a dog is so different. A dog is so happy to see you,so happy for a walk or a belly rub. Peanut is his name and he is getting old. But we love him: barking and all because he loves us.

  • *Crying*

  • This reminded me of all my beloved animal companions who are gone now...they all added to my life in ways they never knew.

I'm so sorry for your loss...

  • Putting my dog down was my best, yet hardest choice I've had to make. I wanted to help her live longer, but I knew it would have been cruel. She knew it was her time to go,and I gave her her wish. she lived a long happy life.

  • Well done........

RIP Amos. Twas a good journey and a helluva story.

  • God bless.

  • Well, dangit. Now I'm in tears all over again missing my own Aussie, Shasta. She brought us much joy and a little consternation, and left us too soon. For weeks after her passing, we could hear her in the house - flopping down on the wooden floor and sighing, the jingle of her tags, her nails clipping across the kitchen floor. It was sweet of her to comfort us that way for awhile.

  • @wycowpatty

I, too, would hear my beloved animal companions after they passed. I'm crying now thinking of them.

    I'm sorry for your loss.

  • R.I.P. Queenie and Jack. You're missed everyday

  • I miss my Sasha. She was an Aussie too. My Bouncer (also and Aussie) is 13. I love him every day I have him.

  • Miss my babies, Neckbone and Homefry. Putting them down was like putting down one of my own children.....

  • I agree with mjpeaches from 6 months ago: Dang it! I've done gone moist...anyone who has ever loved any animal of any kind will identify with this remembrance.

  • I miss my buddy, Thug, black lab, best in the world.

  • Baxter's dog, Boller, was a wonderful dog. He'll be missed.

  • shooter , your missed ever day ole buddy r.i.p

  • sweet ,thank you!

  • My german shepard Stormie is 14. This last year has been tough on her but the sparkle in her eyes remains unchanged. She will be deeply missed when the time comes but Your "Just a Dog" tribute couldn't have said it any better THANK YOU for putting it into words!

  • What a touching tribute for your friend...I to have a 15 yr old friend who's facing his final challenges...I know I will miss him. But regardless he will be with me always.....as your dog is with you.....in your heart

  • Well if that don't make you tear up you ant got no heart when it comes to dogs

  • @reiningchick247 that dog was a therapy dog.. that helped.

  • @reiningchick247

I agree, I don't even have a dog right now, can't afford one. I've lost many dogs in years past to old age and even though they're just a dog, they become a family member and its very hard to let go.

  • Baxter, you are a man's man. Anybody who is that feeling towards his dog is a good man. I have had a few dogs in my life which I miss dearly. Anyone who says dogs don't have emotional feelings or can't feel love is missing a major part of life. God bless you Baxter.

  • wow... i sure do love mr black

  • Dang it! I've done gone moist...

  • I have been following you for more than 20 years, your writings got me thru veterinary school with a smile on my face, or a different perspective I had not seen before. Proud to count you among my colleagues. Very touching tribute.

  • In 35 years, my husband and I have had six wonderful dogs as companions. Our 15 and 20 year olds died last year. Now we have a little two year old and it's like having a baby in the house again. Thanks for sharing about your dog.

  • I have such a crush on you. Thank you for everything you do. I really appreciate it.

  • beautiful. . ..

  • Thanx Baxy.. fine epilogue to a noble creature.. I hope you don't mind if I use the same for my dog when she passes.. makes me appreciate her more.

  • You remind me so much of my dad with the simple elequence of your words .....thanks for sharing such a sweet eulogy to your dog...I have shared it with two friends that have just lost their four-legged friend ...

  • thats the worst part of having a k9 or feline companion..they always leave to soon.

  • Thanks for the kind words of wisdom Baxter.

  • Cannot be said any better.

  • I. too lost a friend and companion of 15 yrs. Sheba is truly missed, but I know she is in heaven. I am sorry for your loss. Loved you video!

  • Thanks, They are part of our family too! And greatly missed when gone :( Sorry for your loss

  • Very nice Baxter!

  • Do cats count... not making light but another close loyal friend threw the years....

  • Yes cats do count. I have a kitten sitting on my shoulder right now.

  • I have a Hemingway Cat 9+ toes right front 7 toes left front and 6 toes rear, was given to use when it was 2-3 days old. I nursed it with a hypodermic syringe with the needle removed for 6-8 weeks 4 times a day,She's 7 now Queen of the house. Some how ?? their part of you..... Merry Christmas.

  • Lord if somehow I havent earned entry to Heaven. Please send me where you send dogs. I have a Kennel of Friends there already. Someone has too throw the balls, give the baths, lead the walks and clip toenails.

  • May God be easy with the pain when I lose my bestfriendm my black lab...Pardner.

  • Perfectly stated. Thank you, and I am sorry for your loss.

Our world just wouldn't be the same without our furry friends.

  • This is a great video short. My sister inlaw lost her dog a few weeks ago so I sent this video to her to let her know that there are other people who loved their dogs and they know how she feels. I have never met Baxter although my father is related to his wife Cindy Lou Black.

  • Baxter was my dogs name. He was a good dog too. I know my dog is in Heaven waiting on me for a few pets. Thanks Mr. Black for these words.

  • the truth

  • GREAT VIDEO! I love BAXTER BLACK. The simple things in life mean the most. It's just a shame that most folks never slow down enough to realize them.

  • Excellent. It's losing a member of the family.
