It really sucks but you got a tooled up workshop so fix the pies, take apart the leaky valve in the shop fix it and screw the "licensed" rip off artists. D.I.Y. all the way. Have cheap generator for next time to run the kerosene heater. Insulate the pipes with felt wrap pr foam wrap.
I don't know how this whole pipe deal panned out, and I don't want to sound like some smart ass...This might be a "no shit dumbass statement"...but I'd wrap them pipes with heat tape and have a small generator dedicated just for them pipes next time you folks get an arctic ball chiller come through.

hey pete, greetings from houston, we had a few issues with ice too just not as bad as you guys did. i feel for ya man. i do have some future advice for ya, i work with valves for a living and next time it leaks from the stem like that when you shut it off just tighten the packing bolts, the 2 bolts to either side of the shaft in the middle. easy.

I think that second valve is suppose to leak when turned off, It bleeds off your pipes going into your sprinkler system. I never seen one bust apart like that, i would call the company that installed it.
@pcfd20 valves aren't supposed to leak open OR closed . Valves on this clip leaked because the packing gland wasn`t tight on the valve spindle. Two nuts on the gland ( each side of the spindle ) just need tightening down on the spindle packing (seal) . Worst case would probly be replacing the valve packing material , available at plumbing supply places. Tight but not so tight the spindle wont turn by hand . Wrench om valve wheel helps when opening or closing IF NEED BE

How can u let ur pipes freeze? U either keep ur place heated or u turn off the water and drain ur pipes as soon as the temperature starts to get down to freezing. Leaving the water on is guaranteed to burst a pipe. Would u drive ur truck with out oil!? U are the master of ur own created self problems.
Also a blanket does not warm up ice. A blanket only works on something that gives off heat.
Pete, when the system is fixed can you have antifreeze added to the water in the pipe work, as its an emergency sprinkler system it wont be running after the first tests, maybe that would help during the cold months
as sugested above draining it and leaving off is probably illegal as its a fire prevention system

That should have been a dry system with air pressure in the pipes (no water) holding off a flapper valve if the garage isn't heated. Probably unusual in Dallas to have that extreme cold for that long for pipes to freeze. Dry systems have galvanized pipe though, it doesn't appear as though that's the case here. That's a terribly hard lesson to learn and sure don't seem fair someone didn't think of a dry system in the first place.

When you said that life threatening thing that got me close to home dad died in Oct due to that, fine and extremely healthy one day, 6 months later dead from grade four brain cancer (absolute worst brain cancer you can get). Awww man... that's not cool... This winter has been a difficult one for everyone, I am in Chicago and am still digging out of 20+ inches of snow. Yea its sucks. But honest good comes with the bad.. What sucks is more bad with what little good sometimes. Just remember you are not alone. I came home today my gutters are frozen, and then with ice melting it backed up water in the attick and now my cealing is screwed up in my house. Well with mold i have the insulation out and i got pissed and im tearing my cealing out now. so now i have a job, and im going to burn a week of my vacation doing this. gota love bullshit.

It's always when business is slow that everything goes wrong. I didn't know that you have to have fire sprinklers, in businesses in Texas. Here in California we only have to put them in new buildings.

Well pete, hopefully it won't run into too much money to make the repairs. For all the help u've given people there, i'm surprised they don't help u out once in awhile. thats when you find out who your real friends are and which ones just want stuff.I like watching your videos, cuz your about the only one that really goes into detail on getting it done right, no matter how long it takes.

Man that sucks. Poor Pete. Them assholes want $100.00 just to come out and say hello.FUCK!!! Well of course you dont have the money. If you did you would be fucking people. Honest guys get no place. Guys with money screw people.I always look back and say i should of done this and that. Hope this shit is a month old and its over. idk what else to say i realy dont. 2010 was the worst year of my life. 2011 started like a pile of crap but is showing signs of looking up. Good luck pete. Your pipes will get fixed. I take things one day at a time. I always think that "you can't eat a whale in one bite. It may take days months or even years but eventually you eat all of that goddamn whale."
