There's a debate about where he got the samples actually. Wikipedia and Roger Linn say it was Art Wood, but James Gadson claims they sampled him from tape.

i think thats one of the best drum machines ever built it actually used real samples. i wonder which drum manufactuer he got the samples off

Prince was famous yes for taking those sounds and making them a part of his hits, which made most associate them with him. But there were so many other artists using it as well. Check out Weather Reports mid 80's releases as an example of the LM-1 being used by other artists just as originally.
