Ok I love Ellen pompeo and Patrick Dempsey. But fuck this I downloaded every single season and like I give a damn about your rich asses I don't have cable (can't pay for it) and the fucking DVDs are expensive as hell so go fuk that this pissed the living hell out if me think ppl might not be as fucking Rich as you selfish rich ppl pisses me off sorry for my Lang
I'm so glad that the characters on greys anatomy are separate from the actors who portray them...cuz FUCK OFF with your "don't download shows from the internet"
I love Greys Anatomy and don't download shows cuz i'm too lazy to find out where to download them and don't wanna get a virus or something. But if someone wants to download the shows, GO FOR IT!!!
that the way i saw all 6 seasons of greys anatomy because im from cyprus and it's like season 3 here. but now that patrick and ellen have said not to i wont anymoree ;p i adore them both..
When the homeless and jobless people in this country are taken care of, THEN I'll start worrying about downloaded shows and petty internet residuals. There are millions of people suffering a hell of a lot more than television writers.
@curiouscale Wtf does that have to do with writers wanting what they deserve? What's your job? If you suddenly get less than what you deserve, I'll be right there saying "Oh geez, don't be a dramaqueen, there are may homeless and jobless people out there who have it much worse than you." The fuck is your logic at?
It's all because of this that i didn't get to see Joshua Jackson on Grey's Anatomy, he was supposed to be a guest star ... :( Ah well at least I still get Patrick Dempsey XD
the are striking because they don't was us to download the episodes on the internet. ellen pompeo said that the writers and the guys on the set doesn't get paid if we download it from the internet. piracy you know
I am a great fan of P.Dempsey and Grey's in general but common' why can't Ellen Pompeo be serious? I don't live in America so I can't watch the show. So how the hell am I supposed to watch it eh? It's so easy to be all like "dont download" etc.. but they gotta think of the reasons why the show is being downloaded from the internet: poor accessibility outside the US & real expensive dvds! Anyways, long live Grey's Anatomy.!
Damn! now I feel guilty! I downloaded the last two seasons of Grey's Anatomy, but I do pay cable! I just prefer to watch it together and without commercials. I also love Patrick!!!
The writers are completely in the right for what they are doing by striking.
It is so unfair that they don't get paid where the actors do, for something they worked on writing. THEY come up with our shows, the actors just play it out for us. They are far more important than anyone else, granted, without everyone else it wouldn't be aired, but they are the sole importance, and arecompletely right to what they are doing.
the techs wouldnt have anything to light if we didnt have writers. and the entire point is that the writers are so necessary that if they dont write there will people going out of jobs. thats their enitre point!
Any job you take, you accept the pay they give you, or you don't. You negotiate before you take the job, accept the job as is, or do not accept and work elsewhere.
You do not accept a job, say you are unhappy and hold other people's livelyhood hostage to get what you failed to negotiate before you accepted the position.
That is just plain wrong, no matter how you try to justify it.
"You do not accept a job, say you are unhappy and hold other people's livelyhood hostage to get what you failed to negotiate before you accepted the position."
You sure do if you haven't received a pay raise in twenty years. You sure do if your working conditions change, as has happened in the age of downloadable media.
The one factor you seem to want to avoid is that no one twists their arm to work as writers. You can choose another profession at any time if you feel like you are cheated. You do not have to put someone who depends on you for a living, out of work. That is just wrong.
They've all ready tried negotiating before, and it didn't work. It's not like they said they siad "Hey, lets strike!" If you feel unsympathetic towards there cause, leave it at that. They had a reason to strike so don't blame the writers, blame the producers who denied them getting there four cents for every dollar. It's not like the studio is not earning enough money by streaming on the Internet. Hell, they're saving money through the Internet by not spending on production.
i agree with them, there not trying to be greedy, but the lady that said don't download shows of the internet, and said don't watch them I don't get paid sounded pretty greedy to me
I respect the film and tv writers of the american entertainment industry. It is now obvious to people far from the entertainment industry how cruicial a part these writers play in making our favourite tv shows.
I dont think that a lot of the actors on television care about the writers, but the fact that the grey's cast are very close with the creator and writer of the show, means that they are more sympathetic.
I wish them all the best of luck, and hope that the networks cave in soon.

These self-centered, multi-millionaire pricks don't care about the countless jobs that are being lost because of this strike. The WGA can kiss my ass.
Tell us exactly what "middle class wages" are which affords writers the luxury of a 3 - 4 month strike?
What other union can remain on strike for 3 or 4 months when their member's wages don't even match the standard of living?
Most hourly employees get less than 1.5% annual increase at the same time writers get bonuses of $50K - $75K a year, those bonuses are in many cases 3 to 4 times what many people make a year.

I download, but yet i just download the episode after i watch it on TV. Do they not get paid for that? Internet isnt my main source. I watch the office, prison break, and much more shows on TV. I just dload it so i can have the episode for myself if i need refreshing. I dont sell it to other people. I lend a season to maybe 1 or 2 friends, but thats it.
oky.......they have there point.....but what about all the people from other countries that dont have the possibility to see it on tv.......because the televisions dont have money to buy the series............what are they supposed to do if they love the series and wanna see them........i understand both sides!!!!!!!!!!
i mean, yes, it's not good, downloading shows 4 free, but what should we do in other countries, where we can't watch these shows in television and we can't buy them either.
i can understand the writer's part too, but that sux this way..
hey i totally disagree, I am from Eastern Europe and we do have the show on tv, but I cant watch it on the net cuz there are not allowing me! I do LOVEEEEEEEEEEE GREY'S ANATOMY and everyone working for it(you are awesome guys) and I am hoping "abc" or whoevere it its, dont hide the money and give your poeple what they deserve!
i see u point......but the tv stations buy the series after some time......depends.....not always right after it airs in America......(maybe in u'r country they do but in mine they don't)and i can't wait that long......and if they buy them in the 1st place(it happened that they aired the 1st season and then they didn't have money to buy season 2......what should i do then).........that's my point of view........

okay yea i support the writers because they dont get any credit or whatever but I NEED SOME NEW SHOWS!!! please please i want Greys Anatomy! I <33 u McDreamy!!
Let's make the chants positive, instead of saying "actors writer will never be divided," they should say "actors writers will always be united." A key to a successful protest is to keep the messages positive.
i agree greedy corps seem to think that fairness is not nessary anymore strike until they wakeup and realize they have to be somewhat fair i read what this is all about wow they wont give up .40 on dvd greedy @sshats, The writers should have more money =)
Shut the fuck up you rich White Fuck. Gimme a fucken break you faggots make twice the amount per year than the average American. So sorry your not making enough two make the payments on your third homes. Fuckers!
of course everyone desrves some money, but right now its the writer's union that's on strike because their contract is up and they can strike. If the crews want to strike, and their contracts are up, they too can strike for a piece of the profits.
Shut the fuck up you rich White Fuck. Gimme a fucken break you faggots make twice the amount per year than the average American. So sorry your not making enough two make the payments on your third homes. Fuckers!
It would be a sweet deal if I could continue to be paid for work I did 10 years ago. Most jobs, you have to keep on working to keep on being paid. Anyone can write, but not anyone can get paid for it. Then again, anyone can sing, but not just anyone can get paid for it. Not that quality work doesn't deserve compensation.
The point is the advertisers are paying the studio to put in those annoying commercial breaks in their streaming shows on the websites. The studio is making money on the advertisements, and the writers have NO CUT of that money. They make ZERO dollars on streaming episodes that the studios are making money off of.
Ohhh, okay. I understand this more now. Hrmm. Well, I'm on the writers' side now. But...I'm also an Internet watcher because I can't get to the television in time to watch my beloved DH. So, I hope the companies give in to the writers' demands and don't simply take the shows and such offline. :(
I can't seem to understand. Is the ABC website not part of ABC? Seriously... what are they complaining about. ABC personally posts all its shows (Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Carpoolers, Ugly Betty,etc).... what is this about?
The ABC website *is* part of ABC. If you go there and watch their full episodes (Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Carpoolers, Ugly Betty, etc) you'll notice they have sponsors and mandatory commercial breaks. These advertisers PAY abc, which in turn, pays its actors.
The woman in the video is referring to illegal downloads or showings (like on YouTube...notice how full episodes get removed for copyright violations?) , that advertisers *don't* pay for. Then they don't get paid.
It's true that illegal downloads mean no profits, but that's not what she means. Currently, writers DON'T get any profits from the web advertising you mentioned. Thus, the strike. Studios say video streaming and download technology is too new to even CONSIDER sharing any future profits. They claim there IS no profit from the web--that company websites LOSE money.
However, I'm pretty sure that projects in the red generally don't continue, much less expand.
If and when there is profit, then that profit should be shared. Moreover, there should be easy online access to information about the distribution of that profit. However, in a nonprofit operation, it is pointless to ask for a piece of the pie when there isn't any.
Do you honestly believe that any of the tv websites are nonprofit? If they aren't making money now (which is hard to believe--think of how quickly they cancel shows) they certainly are meant to make a profit in the coming years. It's not pointless to ask for your fair share in a venture that is, in all likelihood, going to be VERY profitable in the coming years. Besides, if there is no profit to be had--now or later--why are the studios so resistant to give the WGA their share of nothing?
I believe them when they say that they are currently not making profit off their site - they do get charged for bandwidth, the more viewers of their show or download of content off their sites the higher the fee they are charged. Advertising is obviously designed to cover that. I do agree however, that a future share of profits (10% of zero is still zero though) would be warranted, especially given the HDTV forced transition around 2009.
Milan, they're not picketing specifically regarding illegal downloads. They're talking about the LEGIT stuff ON ABC/NBC, etc that are placing full episodes online and every profit they make from online advertisement from such online media is NOT being seen by the writers. That is what they are striking about.

Who could really sit and watch these shows all the way through. Good god. They stink. They make women look stupid. And men look dumber. Is that how you act in your neighborhood? WOW!!! I want to puke!
i think the writers strike is a great idea they deserve more money for all there hard work you would do the same thing if you were in there position.think about it if you download ok but after a while there will be nothing to download becuase there will me no writers to write anything and then everyone loses. im on the writers side i think there should be a strike
Do you think it is equal justice. Or just too much time on their hands, and the money to be annoying? It is a honor for me to help people. I still have loans out the butt. But, when I do save someones life. It makes that monthly payment all worth it. I guess I am proud of what I do. When I see them act like that. I never want my children to turn the TV again. We have plenty of old books published. And ones coming out.
downloading is the greatest invention since television.. hell, it's even better! cause you get to choose whateeeeeeeeeeeeever you wanna see :D yes, we actually have this BRILLIANT technology today! still, the government makes it illegal.. WTF? why? so the economic system doesnt partially crash? how about work with the issue instead of banning it? If you make it legal, then people (the writers) can make money off of it ;)
All of you people are so uninformed! My cousin is a member for the WGA, and is not RICH like you all seem to assume! Writers do not make money unless their screenplay is purchased. These writers are asking for 2.5 percent of the residuals! Without their words and creativity the t.v. shows would never even exist! You might want to become informed before you write uninformed ignorant comments!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ok! How much is that 2.5 percent we are not putting a dollar amount on? I think if you are not good enough writer to publish something all the time get another job. Walmart is always hiring. It is time that maybe the writers can roll up their sleeves and work. Instead of carrying signs for free all day. And stop whining. Life is too short.
And it wouldn't hurt to learn to write something more than smut. And for god stakes you actors should cover your bodies.
What do you have to say to the producers. Everybody might be making more than you but the point is how are the profits divided and who is doing the real work.
People do real work everyday and not get paid. That is life? So if your child was dying from a cardiac problem. I should say no I will not save them cause I am not on the clock? I am thankful I can save a life and I would not blink a eye or get a dollar sign in my head. I judge my life by the small things. I am happy, have a nice home and healthy kids. I am blessed. I don't have to march for a percentage. You know hospitals make money. So should I strike? I am not greedy. Sorry.
Imagine the parents of the child you saved, paid the hospital a million dollar for it, and you only get 50 dollars for doing an eight hour surgery. It wouldn't be a fair division of profit.
But hey, if you think it's ok to work hard and somebody else gets to keep the money.
That is not my business who makes money. I am getting paid. I get benefits. I feel rewarded. And there is no better rush. When someone goes from near death to a smile, and walking out of the hospital. Writers can never get that flipping juiced up over that feeling. Giving someone their life back. And handing the parents a child with a better beating heart. That is flipping too much. Money lol you crack me up.
People are starving in the USA. And all you think about is how can you get more. I still am driving a 12 year old car. I have to work 5 12 hours shifts. Like I feel bad for you writers. Standing out there holding signs you little criers. You write garbage that is dirty. I stick to the the reruns of the Munsters, Green acres. I think all you writers and actors are dirty anyways with no morals.I cant get a big house in the hills. boo hoo POOR ME!!
i wonder if these writers still write something when they get home after the strike, you knw like writing spec scripts or new ideas for future shows or something...writing is part of their lives and they can't just stop from writing just like that...sometimes a writer's creativity is at its peak when he is miserable and hungry.
I think it is sad. All they want is what is rightfully theirs. If it wasn't for the writers they wouldn't have a show to begin with.I say give them their fair shake and let them get back to their job.If it was you and what you love to do you would want them to settle up.GO WGA!!!! Don't let them push you around. If our shows have to be shut down for a little while we can survive because we don't work for them.Let's give them the support they need so they can get back to work!!!
Well it shows character. These people with their dumbs signs. Have none. Since this strike we have not turned on the TV. And my sons french test went from a B to a A. HMMM. Maybe everyone if they turn that crap off. Can get alitte smarter? Send a care package to the troops they don't have toothpaste an water now.
I know all you can do is make fun of spelling. I bet you support these losers. Why don't they all go to war and give the men a break over seas. They get paid for it and they get benefits. Maybe they can bring a pencil to hide behind. Whining babies. Oh maybe they can bring a dictionary. Or a sign with dirty stuff written over it. That was creative.
They deserve the money from the shows on the internet just as much as they deserve money from the shows on TV. How do the networks not understand this? "They're promos" my ASS.
GO BACK TO WORK!!!...writers are costing the jobs and livelihood for the other production workers of TV shows who make WAAAY less money, have everything to lose and nothing to gain by their misguided greed!! Please fire them all and destroy the union!
The strike isn't about them getting a bigger salary. Did you know they don't make a dim off internet downloads - they people either pay for or watch for free. THEY GET NOTHING.
Yes, writer's make a lot of money. But compared to studio execs they make peanuts.
It's estimated that studios made over a billion dollars las year in internet downloads. And the writers? Saw NOTHING of that money. For work that wouldn't exist without them.
You mean to tell me these writers are that dumb they take a back seat to a bunch of coke head actors. Oh they are so smart and creative they can't act? Come on. They better take some acting lessons. Stop giving those losers material. What is wrong with them. Those two ugly sister twin bone chicks are rich. And they are the worst actors I have ever seen. God they are gross. They make me puke when I see them.
Would you allow your local to roll over an accept a bunch of big rollbacks? I don't think you would, despite the fact that it would put a lot of people out of work. You'd fight to get a fair contract.
Rollbacks? Fair to who? What are you talking about? These people want MORE MONEY, period...at the cost of 1000s of others being out of work. Your local does not have as great of an INSTANT impact on OTHERS as this situation. Negotiate the deal WHILE STILL WORKING...no matter how long it takes. How do they deserve the same amount of money from the Internet as TV when the quality is NOT as good? I call "PLANT!!!" You all must be a bunch picketing writers. Nobody I know supports this nonsense.
I'm a member of Teamsters local 399. This issue is going to effect all the unions. Residuals go to every union and fund the pensions of IATSE and Teamsters. This is not about a few cents per DVD or Download. Otherwise the Studios would have settled. ITs about studios wanting to keep unions jurisdiction away from the internet.
1, There are millions of people in the US that DONT watch tv anymore
2, Some writers, actors, etc spent the last two decades FLAUNTING their high salaries to the public,
3, There are more alternatives for the public now: Internet, RERUNS. Studios can MAKE money.
4. Studios have branched out into other forms of income, and they earn hefty revenues from showing reruns. Studio have no reason to bargain anymore. Just like the auto industry.
They killed our favourite shows like corporate Nazi's - time to cancel cable & unplug the TV until the Commie-Network-Regime can humble themselves & do whats right. We can get vital news info from the web & radio - Unplug Your Damn TV's!
Writers are the foundation to the entertainment industry. Without writers, actors are just another pretty face on TV, just standing there doing nothing.
How is it being greedy when you want to get paid for something you created? It's not fair for the studios to find a way without paying the writers and still getting their movies and TV shows showed on the internet. It's shady. There's nothing "fair" or "get over it and get another job" about it, that's crazy. Without writers, their is no industry, there is no entertainment.
The strike is a reaction to unwillingness to negotiate effectively/fairly. The strike is a reaction to what you didn't see or hear about going previous to monday's start date of the strike.
are you morons kidding me... Fuck the actors and writers... who wrote that....greedy bastards... what are you guys 10 or 11 years old.... Most writers live broke... under 20,000 a years if that and could be consider successful... The networks want to make money of the the shows through DVD and download and that's great... but there has to be compensation for the writers... it's just logical stuff here...
The writers are the HEART of this industry, without them there would be no shows...common sense...STRIKES ARE GREAT! and this one well...I'll support for now, but because I'm just across the border it really dosen't affect me for I have no access/privilages to full eposides on the net..which blows, Unfortunatly WE are all replaceable in the workforce and (union) contracts can easily be ripped up.
"The majority of the WGA's 12,000 members are unemployed at any given time, and median earnings are about $25,000 a year."
"Despite the stories of multi-million-dollar pitch sales and six-figure-per episode salaries enjoyed by a small percentage of writers, most professional writers in Hollywood are very middle-class people."
Guess its time to find a new job. This is really stupid. Stop whining get a real job then. So you are saying they make like poverty level and still do this job. Now who would do this. And be able to stand on the street and strike. Real people would be in foreclosure If they stood on the street for days. Come on!
The reason they can afford to strike is because of the amount of money members have paid the WGA, retard. The WGA supports the writers financially for the duration of the strike. If the strike lasts too long, the WGA won't be able to continue to provide financial assistance, and writers will have trouble paying their bills. I wouldn't be surprised that writers are getting their houses forclosed for not getting the amount of money they deserve.
Now with the internet, writers want a bigger percentage than what they're getting for DVDs, but the studios are like, its online, we're not going to pay you a cent, although we are making money through viewer DLs and adv. The future of tv is hooked to internet for movies/shows on demand, this means writers will not be paid in the future for the shows when reaired, because it would be "online."
And that means in the future when online streaming is the new TV, NO ONE on the cast is going to get paid! They'll be making ZILCH! So get your heads out of your asses guys and be REAL.
Writers are middle-class people, and several of them are even lower than that. It makes me sick to see people like you attacking the writers for striking because they just want to be SAFE in the future and make sure they can GET MONEY and pay for their FAMILIES and just make a god damn living. If they don't strike, they will NEVER get compensated for online media.
I can't believe so many people here are against the strike. If you guys knew anything, you'd know the writers barely get paid. They get paid 4 CENTS for each DVD that gets sold! DVDs barely reach a million copies, but when they do, that's only $40,000! Do you know how little that is? And writers only get 2.5 cents for every dollar their companies make from each viewing on teleivision. That is NOT a lot of money.
This has to be the first time I've seen a YouTube thread where people sided with the studios - what about those RIAA threads where people say "I'd buy more CDs if the artist got more of the money"? That's this, but with TV and movies. For every 200k-a-year major TV show writer, there are hundreds who are just getting by (just like the music industry).
Hey big time stars maybe the writers would get paid a little more if you were paid less? Unions destroy companies and drive them overseas. They just killed Chrysler and GM is next. Wonder why America doesnt really make stuff? Unions!
The studios will never give them Internet royalties. NEVER. The studios take all the risk so they are entitled to get the lion's share. They want to get out of being in business with these people for life.
The big issue is they're trying to redefine the term "FREE USE".
I actually really do like Grey's Anatomy, but I don't watch t.v. on a regular basis for the sole purpose that... television is *old* news now. I'm sorry to say it, but it's true. x_X I whole heartedly support what they're doing and I understand on a basic level what they're trying to say, but...
200K AVERAGE? That means a bunch are well over 200K considering there is bound to be new writers that don't make nearly that. They don't need more money, they just don't know how to structure a contract to assure this wouldn't happen.
I think it's that the studios make a disproportionate amount. Also, a way for writers to get more money is for them to strike. However, writers should definitely get paid for the work they do. They're not getting paid for internet releases.

Ps
Patrick Dempsey is hot.

Bottom line: it's not the writers' jobs to make sure the lighting techs get paid. That's the studios' job.
TensersFloatingDisk 4 years ago
the techs wouldnt have anything to light if we didnt have writers. and the entire point is that the writers are so necessary that if they dont write there will people going out of jobs. thats their enitre point!
imatigerlover 3 years ago
Any job you take, you accept the pay they give you, or you don't. You negotiate before you take the job, accept the job as is, or do not accept and work elsewhere.
You do not accept a job, say you are unhappy and hold other people's livelyhood hostage to get what you failed to negotiate before you accepted the position.
That is just plain wrong, no matter how you try to justify it.
WeedaPeople 4 years ago
"You do not accept a job, say you are unhappy and hold other people's livelyhood hostage to get what you failed to negotiate before you accepted the position."
You sure do if you haven't received a pay raise in twenty years. You sure do if your working conditions change, as has happened in the age of downloadable media.

No you do not, not if you care about other people.
You resolve your differences without putting others out of work...or go get another job.
Only inconsiderate assholes put other people out of work.
WeedaPeople 4 years ago
The one factor you seem to want to avoid is that no one twists their arm to work as writers. You can choose another profession at any time if you feel like you are cheated. You do not have to put someone who depends on you for a living, out of work. That is just wrong.

Ask yourself: Are the studios putting innocent people out of work, or are the writers putting innocent people out of work by stiking?
You can negotiate without striking. Non-Union people do it all the time.
WeedaPeople 4 years ago
sorry to disagree, but the Studios are putting innocent people out of work. jus look at the family guy crew...
the strikers are out of work, and they just want better conditions.
The studios are just selfish pricks who cant stop counting their immense amount of money.
WillPG1212 4 years ago
ill:"the strikers are out of work"
The strikers PUT THEMSELVES out of work...and a lot of INNOCENT people as well.
Did the strikers care about anyone they put out of work? No...they only cared about themselves.
You can misplace blame all you want. The studios may be evil on their own, but not as evil as those who put people out of work for their own gain.
WeedaPeople 4 years ago
I have no pity for people who are willing to screw others and put them out of work just to make more money.
They could negotiate or start legal action without hurting others.
WeedaPeople 4 years ago
They've all ready tried negotiating before, and it didn't work. It's not like they said they siad "Hey, lets strike!" If you feel unsympathetic towards there cause, leave it at that. They had a reason to strike so don't blame the writers, blame the producers who denied them getting there four cents for every dollar. It's not like the studio is not earning enough money by streaming on the Internet. Hell, they're saving money through the Internet by not spending on production.
overseer06 4 years ago

So go to court. You do not put innocent people out of work for your own gain. That is just wrong.

Jenna10227 4 years ago
The point is the advertisers are paying the studio to put in those annoying commercial breaks in their streaming shows on the websites. The studio is making money on the advertisements, and the writers have NO CUT of that money. They make ZERO dollars on streaming episodes that the studios are making money off of.
FarashaSilverSand 4 years ago
Ohhh, okay. I understand this more now. Hrmm. Well, I'm on the writers' side now. But...I'm also an Internet watcher because I can't get to the television in time to watch my beloved DH. So, I hope the companies give in to the writers' demands and don't simply take the shows and such offline. :(
prettyprettythingwow 4 years ago 3
this is sooo odd!
I can't seem to understand. Is the ABC website not part of ABC? Seriously... what are they complaining about. ABC personally posts all its shows (Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Carpoolers, Ugly Betty,etc).... what is this about?
nimashukri 4 years ago
nimashukri,
The ABC website *is* part of ABC.
MilanWisteria 4 years ago
It's true that illegal downloads mean no profits, but that's not what she means. Currently, writers DON'T get any profits from the web advertising you mentioned. Thus, the strike. Studios say video streaming and download technology is too new to even CONSIDER sharing any future profits. They claim there IS no profit from the web--that company websites LOSE money.
However, I'm pretty sure that projects in the red generally don't continue, much less expand.
zytka1 4 years ago
If and when there is profit, then that profit should be shared. Moreover, there should be easy online access to information about the distribution of that profit. However, in a nonprofit operation, it is pointless to ask for a piece of the pie when there isn't any.
userafw 4 years ago
Do you honestly believe that any of the tv websites are nonprofit? If they aren't making money now (which is hard to believe--think of how quickly they cancel shows) they certainly are meant to make a profit in the coming years. It's not pointless to ask for your fair share in a venture that is, in all likelihood, going to be VERY profitable in the coming years. Besides, if there is no profit to be had--now or later--why are the studios so resistant to give the WGA their share of nothing?
zytka1 4 years ago
I believe them when they say that they are currently not making profit off their site - they do get charged for bandwidth, the more viewers of their show or download of content off their sites the higher the fee they are charged. Advertising is obviously designed to cover that. I do agree however, that a future share of profits (10% of zero is still zero though) would be warranted, especially given the HDTV forced transition around 2009.
userafw 4 years ago
Milan, they're not picketing specifically regarding illegal downloads. They're talking about the LEGIT stuff ON ABC/NBC, etc that are placing full episodes online and every profit they make from online advertisement from such online media is NOT being seen by the writers. That is what they are striking about.

Whoopietail 4 years ago 2
People do real work everyday and not get paid. That is life? So if your child was dying from a cardiac problem. I should say no I will not save them cause I am not on the clock? I am thankful I can save a life and I would not blink a eye or get a dollar sign in my head. I judge my life by the small things. I am happy, have a nice home and healthy kids. I am blessed. I don't have to march for a percentage. You know hospitals make money. So should I strike? I am not greedy. Sorry.

cleopatra86 4 years ago
That is not my business who makes money. I am getting paid. I get benefits. I feel rewarded. And there is no better rush. Yes, writer's make a lot of money. But compared to studio execs they make peanuts.
It's estimated that studios made over a billion dollars las year in internet downloads. And the writers? Saw NOTHING of that money. For work that wouldn't exist without them.
They are just asking for their fair share.

The dynamics have changed since the 1980's.

Come on!
shelli516 4 years ago

The future of tv is hooked to internet for movies/shows on demand, this means writers will not be paid in the future for the shows when reaired, because it would be "online."
fechou 4 years ago 11
And that means in the future when online streaming is the new TV, NO ONE on the cast is going to get paid! They'll be making ZILCH! So get your heads out of your asses guys and be REAL.

Writers are middle-class people, and several of them are even lower than that. It makes me sick to see people like you attacking the writers for striking because they just want to be SAFE in the future and make sure they can GET MONEY and pay for their FAMILIES and just make a god damn living. If they don't strike, they will NEVER get compensated for online media.
NoobyWooby 4 years ago 6

I just can't feel sympathy for people who wrap SL500's around trees.
Lohan was right there. Ask her for money. She has it all, not us.

They don't need more money, they just don't know how to structure a contract to assure this wouldn't happen.
juuustin13 4 years ago
I think it's that the studios make a disproportionate amount. Also, a way for writers to get more money is for them to strike. However, writers should definitely get paid for the work they do. They're not getting paid for internet releases.

You've added an extra 0. I believe the figure is 20k.

No, it is not. The average WGA writer makes 200k
