Back in the Days, after completing special stages with only Sonic, I pushed myself on gathering all 7 Chaos Emerald with Tails, and I did it, on the console itself, at age of 11 or so.
I wish they put Sonic 2,3 & Knuckles and maybe Sonic CD in generations. But noo...they put sonic 1. -.- which isn't a bad game. Its just, included the others. Ya know.
@Armidillodude With the console, you will keep your emeralds count if you start the game over once completed. Just let the SEGA into logo appearing once the credits at game end have ended-up, without using the reset button.
I just played the game and for the first time to my great surprise got all the 7 emeralds but I made it easier by pausing and unpausing reapetedly is that cheating?... I also beated the game... with a few savestates

@GothicxDeathxGirlx85 its not necesary for ending the game, only for getting the ability of being Super. However, a good ending for super sonic is programmed, but is only accesible by ending the death egg (last level) with super sonic (using debug or cheats).
I hate how tails screws you over in this game you need 60 rings you'll have 57 and tails has 5 and he gets hit now you only have 57 rings you lose the chaos emerald ugh fucking tails
The special stages in Sonic 2 are definetly one of my least favorite special stages, although the Sonic Heroes' special stages are fucking shit, mashing the X button on my controller to try and catch a chaos emerald.... Definetly not my idea of something "special". Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles are my favorite, because they were out of luck finding them
I am impressed! I've been playing this since I was seven or eight (mid-90s), and I didn't get all of them until a couple of years ago haha. And I've never gotten all seven in Emerald Hill. The earliest I ever have is Chemical Plant, usually it's Aquatic Ruin. My inner eight year old and current 24 year old me applaud you! =) And I totally agree about Tails. I'm convinced he's just playing for Robotnik. That's the only way to excuse his apparent desire to kill Sonic.
@flame6753 i just finally got the last emerald even with tails holding me back..he is a burden..but not only is the psn version of this game laggy as all hell i guess i cannot go super sonic...i did not get the trophy for getting the emeralds either...pretty angry

@flame6753 It was an easily accessible feature they implemented, I wouldn't necessarily call it cheating. It does make it incredibly easy though! I've never been able to complete the special stages without the save / load tools.
Knives I totally agree. my sister usually plays as Tails but when I'm in the Hill Top Zone he always jumps a head taking the one thing that you need (that little land on the vine) every single time. When I get on he jumps and misses, then takes the one under me.
I always played this in home room before regular classes (special ed. class for home room for the win). Was only able to get the first chaos emerald before classes started though.

It took me much longer to master the Sonic 2 special stages than Sonic 1 or Sonic 3. They blew my mind. I actually felt more "rewarded" when I got all of the Chaos Emeralds. Super Sonic was just icing on the cake.

@flame6753 No, it took me fuking forever but it was SO satisfying going super sonic. The monkey closer to the hyper shoes thing at 13:13 probably made me lose all my rings at least six times cuz i was roid raging and felt like i needed revenge, then i gave it the finger and kept going...
ok after continous loading i finally managed to get up there, but for some reason when i go through the star it doesnt trigger. is it because it is over 9 minutes and the time is flashing?

Games in the 90's had such a good level design. Levels were so god damn big. Not its a straight line from the very start until the finish... With some cutscenes in the middle.

Do you have to get the checkpoints in a certain order? I got all the ones in the 1st act. Went to the second act, missed the 5th one, I did the 6th one, then went back and got the 5th one (after you get the extra man box) and it was already done up, and I havent ever got that one :(
I saw that. Well I kept playing and got to act2 of the Chemical Plant Zone and came across another checkpoint. When I entered this one, it took me to the grey and yellow tubes to collect rings. Same as you did on the 7th checkpoint in emerald city. I haven't finished it because it was late. But do you think that will work? I can get the 7th emerald on that checkpoint? I'd hate to have to go through and do em all over if not lol

@KenneyX15 that means you passed it already during your route. Notice that I was very careful not to pass a lamp post before going to. Sorry, you gotta start over or go to chemical plant.
@Redheadeddude41 the answer is yes. Once you get all of the chaos emeralds, you can turn into super sonic on every stage when you get 50 rings as long as you don't get game over.
ffs I could never beat special zones because I always had tails and wouldn't get rid of her because I liked her so much. I had my sister play tails back in the 90's and that made it even worse we could hardly get by the special stage 3 back then when she played tails. FML would have been awesome to have seen and played super sonic at that age. Really depressing when I think about it.
tails can be used as a second player so if you have a friend who wont hold you back he could do the special stages with you

If you get (i.e.) the 6th checkpoint in the 2nd act, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th checkpoint will be ready.
You must get them in order.

@Redheadeddude41 the answer is yes. Once you get all of the chaos emeralds, you can turn into super sonic on every stage when you get 50 rings as long as you don't get game over.

How long does your character stay super sonic, and can you use it on all levels if you get all the emeralds its the first level like you did?

@sykoedis he stays super sonic for as long as you have rings and yes you keep him throughout the game.

Hm.....never thought about doing this as Sonic only. Tails always gets hit by the bombs and as a result I can never get more than 3 emeralds.

tails can be played also if you play solo
then its no problem to get all the rings and dodge the bombs

ffs I could never beat special zones because I always had tails and wouldn't get rid of her because I liked her so much. I had my sister play tails back in the 90's and that made it even worse we could hardly get by the special stage 3 back then when she played tails. FML would have been awesome to have seen and played super sonic at that age. Really depressing when I think about it.
