@iamanubertuber I think it's a roland drum pad thingy (forgive me i'm a guitarist XD) that phil physically plays the beat on, then using a loop station keeps it going. Then he goes into live drumming. This is how they keep a lot of their beats going, especially on TKOL.

A common time signature is 4/4; most pop songs are in 4/4 (you can count 1 2 3 4 easily). The first 4 tells us how many of the second number there are, 4ths mean quarter notes. You can also have 6/8, meaning 6 eighth notes. 5/4 means that each meter has 5 quarter notes in it, which is an uncommon time signature in pop music (more common in jazz: look up take five).
