  • This is awesome!

  • why o why can't they still make music like this??!!

  • I absolutely love this song!!

  • I'm living the words to this song, and reminds me of the time I first started in this business. A very big part of what made me want not only sing great songs but to attempt to write them as well.

  • i love this song.

    thank you

  • I remember the first time I heard this song. I was in high school.

I was listening to my AM transister radio and had it on the only soul

station we could get at night. I cried myself to sleep. I was about

17 or so. I just ABSORBED this song. I remember walking home

from school the next day, recalling as much of the song as I could...

the words... the emotion... the love (that the singer felt) for his woman...

THE STRINGS... just walking home and weeping.

  • I absolutely love this song. Thank you for reminding me of a time when men knew how to express their love for a woman. Giving their woman the proper respect.

  • VERY NICE INDEED

  • I get alot of strength when I hear this song. It makes me want to pull my wife to me, and tell her how much she means to me, and I thank God the lifestyle of running the streets is completely out of me. Had I met her some 5 years ago, it would have been a disaster. Thank You Mr. Dozier. You are loved Sir.

  • Absolutely, positively my favorite song of all time!!! I was first introduced to this song in 1974 as a high schooler in Northeast Texas. This song always reminded me of my first girlfriend. Lamont said all the things i was unable to say at that point in my life. Tremendous talent, beautiful ballads, a true legend that still lives!!!

  • This song takes me back to a better time and a better place. Those words to this song mean so much to me...I have lived this song.

  • lupe!

  • Met Lamont Dozier in LA at a Dan O'Day radio conference a number of years ago. He did a low key set on piano. We took a bathroom break - so who am I standing next to? Yup - the man. I managed to get out that he was one of the greatest writers/producers ever - without messing things up. Kind of awkward, but I wasn't going to miss a chance to talk to him.

    Charlie O'Brien

  • Just Blaze sampled this for Common's "The Light" (2008).

  • @MicJones Just Blaze did not do the light and the sample was not this is was Bobby Coldwell "Open your eyes"

  • @excaliba360 You might wanna re-read my post. "The Light" (2008). It was a secondary version of the song. Which WAS produced by Just Blaze and did in fact sample this record.

  • @MicJones yeah your right i think its called "the Light 2008" good song

  • Comment removed

  • @natewhits No disrespect, but go listen to "The Light 2008" (you can find it on YouTube). This is the sample that was used for that song. I know what the sample source was the original. It's not the original I was referring to though.

  • @MicJones yeah man, i removed my comment shortly after, you are correct... hahaha. good lookin out. peace.

  • Hell Naw! What a jam; along with the "Fish aint bitin". Beautiful time in the city.

  • .........Oh yeah!!!

  • suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper.

  • WOW! This is such a SOULFUL and TRUTHFUL ballard that is still true today! We got to hold on to what we got!! Thanks for sharing!

  • @Contessais4u nice comment I agree. Wonderful music

  • I love this song. It keeps me calm.

  • Gravel Roads, Green Fields, and the Smell of Fresh Air, McAdams, Mississippi one big smile! This record just takes me on a trip back down memory lane, a time in my life, when everything seemed to be alright, playing in a Friday Night Football Game and taking my girl out on a date, "Man"!

  • im staying home tonight!!!!

  • @chesteroglesby : Chester, I feel the same way! This song makes you really want to stay hoje and appreciate what you have!! I loved your comment!

  • This is the best...just the best

  • This was my dad's therapy record when I was growing up. You knew he had a hard day working for the man if he came home and played this.

  • @mrwhatthepho34 "Speak on it" Our parents were fighting a tough battle, but they pulled through. (That was black pride at it's best!)

  • Even though Lamont was a well-established songwriter by then, ironically he didn't write this 1. HIt #4 soul, #15 in Billboard. God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg R U high? Of course he wrote this.

  • @1580KDAY87 Then Lamont must've used an alias. The writin' credits say that it was written by, McKinley Jackson and James Reddick. Just readin' what was said in the Billboard Pop Annual. God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg As far as writing credits, McKinley Jackson is a real person. He produced this album for Lamont. James Reddick may be Lamont. At the time may have been still in litigation with Motown and if he put his name on a writing credit, Motown may have gotten a piece of it. A lot of the early Invictus/Hot Wax records like "Give Me Just A Little More Time" and "Band Of Gold" were written by H-D-H but they were in court with Motown so they used aliases.

  • if only these were the days when we can enjoy good music like this

  • Man, how good it is!

  • Smooth!!!!!!!!

  • Lamont bodies this. This song is his and his alone, fam.

  • Artifacts Intro?

  • Lupe fiasco- steady mobbin

  • yep...ppl use PLENTY of old soul classics from the 70's i got TONS of sample info on pimpin like this.

  • Check out Marvin Gaye's "Come live with me Angel" and see where G-Unit got their song from.

  • @FedExHumper

    bout to now

  • I feel the same way about my sweet sweet wife, beautiful song* Dozier is a treasure !

  • Wow, I hadnt heard this in 30 yrs and its a gem

  • 1974..

  • @nsimone4me Yeah! what great times those days were.

  • No direspect lemont...but you should have sold this jam to Teddy P.(R.I.P)

  • I know that lamp he laying under hot as a bitch...lol

  • this is a real love song here

  • Absolutely love this!!

  • lupe fiasco-ghetto story. great great song both ways

  • Good music by a talented man and I just wish that some these so call today singers would listen to these artist and how they sang a song and not all the songs back then were about getting the booty or putting each down .

  • Man don't you just love that BASS work by James Jamerson the arrangment is excellent also. Thanks for posting!!!

  • Tempts 2000 I agree with you 110% and there will never been another but I've always wondered how did Jamerson die?

  • J.J. died from liver disorder reports are that he drank alot but could play that BASS R.I.P. Mr. Jamerson.

  • Thanks tempts 2000 for the response. I also heard that at one point, his son was trying to do something.

  • Yes his son has played on a few big hit, Rise by Herb Alpert, George Benson and a host of other that escape me right now.

  • Thanx tempts2000 you have are a wealth of information you wouldnt be from Det. would you?

  • NO But thanks I just love the behind the scenes stuff.

  • i agree that Berry Gordy did not give props to Lamont, but I also agree with the comment about those of us who knew, every time i bought a record i would silently thank Lamont Dozier, back then it was Dozier and Dozier.they were recognized and loved till this day. this has allways been a favorite!!

  • Do you mean Holland, Dozier & Holland?

  • All I can say is WOW...its beautiful, PASSIONATE, DEEP AND EMOTIONALLY HYPNOTIZING.....

  • Lupe sampled this to perfection! Excellent song from both him and Lamont!

  • this is one of the best songs ever made.

Epic, in every sense of the word.

  • real pimp'n good for your mind and souls

'' Trying hold on to his woman his life'' REAL TALK

  • I had to actually look up the word henpecked. I tell my 7 yr old son "some will call him henpecked for given his momma her proper respect!"

  • this is one of my favorite songs i wishit was a requirement that men listen to this cut

  • WOW!!! thats harsh... true but harsh...

  • I agree with your agreement. I would've like to have seen some feted media recognition. So many singer-songwriters have been. And of course that snake Berry Gordy never saw fit to even thank the cardinal people who made Motown great. Oh well....

  • Truly one of the great underrated and legendary composer\artisst from Motown, Invictus, and Beyond, Upwards and Higher. Rembering 107.5WBLS-FM\ NYC's "Sure Shots" playlist of '73-'74! Takes me back to the future!!!

  • Man oh man,,,Frankie Crocker was the man back in the day on that radio station.

  • Atomank68,

I agree that he is one of the great(est) legendary composers/artist, but I would not say underrated. Those of us who are blessed to know who he is do not underate him. He brings joy to the soul of anyone who has ever heard his music. They many not know who he is, but they know his music!

  • AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • tempts2000: I am glad to learn that you agree with me. Lamont Dozier is an example of a true artist and someone with immeasureable talent.

    fucking legendary

  • Mrblue2008. the best times were had when we were young and dumb dont u think. its the best and worst feelings rolled into one, they make for poignant memories x

  • I have listened to this song since I was a teenager. The passion in Lamont's voice is amazing. There is no way he made this up. He had to feel a special love for a special woman. Music today does not come close. Go to you tube videos and look up R and B and soul. You got to be kidding me. This song brings tears to my eyes because it reminds me of a special woman, but you know the story. I was young and dumb. oh well

  • I totally agree with you on that one. I said the same thing....that he was really singing about his own woman. Had to be! I understood this song even way back then when it first came out.

  • agreed simply divine.....

  • simply divine

  • THIS USE TO BE A HIT IN CHICAGO.

  • REALLY love the long version of this!

  • This is 1 of my all time favorite songs simply beautiful. Lamont Dozier is an amazing songwriter and singer. WOW

  • Masterpiece!

  • that's common-the light 2008, consequence-pretty little sexy mama. and lupe fiasco-ghetto story (steady mobbin). all of them songs are killas

  • And Eric Roberson's "Couldn't hear me over the music"

  • I've been wondering who sang this song he sounds a lot like johnny taylor. Lamont did a great job on this song its gripping to the soul. This is real r&b music they can keep this crap there singing now .

  • Ur right he does sound very similar to JT here.

  • this is a great song

  • one of the ten best sond sang by a man thats why i stay home

  • wasn't this common and just blaze - the light??? im sure it is. anyway both are dope ass tunes
