If you drop the labels for a second and look at which side, on which policies, want to take away the decision-making and responsibility from individuals (liberty) and give it to government (tyranny...even when elected) then it is clear that liberals (socialists) are against economic freedom and some conservatives are against personal freedom (i.e. war on drugs).
