The wind picked up a bit. but I couldn't tell that much, since it was at night. I know that about 16 west of where I took this video, trees were down in Pikeville, Tennessee and that in Cleveland, Tennessee, about 30 miles to the southeast, the wind blew the roof off a rubbermaid facility, according to the SPC. Go to their site and look up 3/29/2002.
i live right on the gulf, in florida, so i have seen a lot of lightening, but the worst i can remember, was 2 sisters walking on the beach, perfectly clear day, and a huge bolt of lightening killed them both!! no warning, nothing! that is what's sooo terrifying about lightening!!
As a parent myself, I understand their feelings on that, Brian. When I took video of the thunderstorms here at daybreak Saturday I left my camera on the front porch and only went out long enough to move it. Lightning scares me more than tornadoes because it is completely unpredictable and is so deadly.
Yes it does. That guy who spoke on the dangers of lightning at the MSU Symposium renewed my appreciation of the dangers of lightning. Should metorologists place more emphasis on this?
In the first place tornadoes are very rare in this mountainous area in southeastern Tennessee, although there was one in the 80s that took out some trees right there at this camp and in the second place you can't guess what EF-scale rating a tornado is when it is on the ground - that is based solely on the damage that the tornado caused after it has passed.
I was very excited. I only got 2 hours of sleep that night, I was so excited. Shortly before I filmed this, I hurt my toe playing basketball and had to have surgery and 2 pins put in.
Yes, the power went out. This is not where I live, though. We were visiting friends who run a christian camp. But, yes their power went out. Watch the clock in the video change from 9:09 to 9:11 p.m. which is @ 5:18 and then watch the rest. No lights.
what kind of camera do you have?

@6649393 At the time, an RCA VHS camcorder. That's what I used to video tape this storm with. We don't have one now that works, unfortunately. :(

I like storms too much. I would have stood outside to listen and watch. Was the wind bad? Cool stuff though.

I've heard that lightning kills more people a year on average in the U.S. than tornadoes and hurricanes.

Hmmm I paused it at 1:56 and I found what looks to be a small tornado about EF-1 on the ground.
