i found a transcription of a different version of this song, but this version is so much better! does anyone know if there is a transcription for this particular vid?? please and thanks!!
iv watched this video a thousand times , listened to it in my car one hundred times and every time it always results in awe and mass respect for brecker
@vivreback I should say that 4 months ago this video was not of my interest to watch, but the second time i heard it, it became one of my most watched videos...It's so sad that Michael Brecker passed away so soon...Greetings
jeff coffin is a fine player, but no contemporary player is even in mike's orbit. in consideration of the totality of his force, technical, harmonic, emotional, across essentially all genres of music, there is no one even close. and there probably never will be.....
There is a big hole in the jazz community without this man. I was lucky enough to see him live a dozens of occasions. There will never be another like him, with his command of his horn and adventurous musical spirit. Who will step in and fill the hole...........no one really can...............but keep your ears open for a Nashville player named Jeff Cofin...........he plays with Bela Fleck and has his own band.
I really love this tune. It is funny that one of my full-sized ensembles had trouble playing with 30 people what this group did with four. Oh and at RoGuExXxAsSaSiN, I find it peculiar that the condensation builds up only on Tenor for me as well. I play a saxello soprano and somehow it all ends up coming of the bell, but I don't know where all the condensation goes on alto...
But again, this is probably one of the most complicated songs I have ever heard from mostly one man...
can you notice his left hand middle finger looks wet? that's moisture that gets accumulated on the high keys, I think it's in the A key, then it condenses to water and start dripping, I was sure I'm the only one it happens to and I was sure I'm doing something wrong... Now that I see Michael "suffering" from the same problem I feel better...
It doesn't change the fact he's a god and I suck...
@zivley Sometimes I have the same trouble playing tenor. And by the way Brecker was, if not the better, one of the bests sax players in the world. Greetings from Spain.
@TheJazz2002 Come on coltrane was still an amazing saxophonist, just in different ways. That is why it is so hard to compare great saxophonists. They are good at playing something, but is one thing better then something completely different?
@MichaelSchwartzJazz ok yeah true they are both amazingly fantastic, but i only just found out about brecker, so i guess i was sayin that i have a new favourite tenor player
I know that he was a great player, I know that he's gone, but he was a complete dick when I met him. We all have our moments, but the guy was totally aloof and rude when I tried to say hello.
We all know about Brecker but the band members are also do a proper '' tear up ''. R.I.P. Mike. Never be another. We've still got a lot of work to do.
This actually comes easy with enough practice. It's just a mechanical thing. Now, choosing THE right note and playing at the right time is another thing. MB is great though!!! :)
it's actually a Selmer Super Balanced Action saxophone. BenPowling, frizzal, prechadou and DanielKo09 are all quite close.
It was a Selmer Super Balanced Action (The next model after the balanced action), with a neck dressed in factory silver plate, off of a Mark VI saxophone. So in a way, you were all right!
I have to say, I've seen Mike Brecker 1 time at Yoshis. In reality this show blowed me away, just the variance in style. My favorite technicqued player, even over or on par with Chris Potter and just the nutty alt-4ths that Kenny Garrett pulls off. I've also seen Sonny Rollins in SF, and my virgin Oakland Yoshis show was Josh Redman. Curious if you guys have other suggests. I love all improv/straight-ahead/bebop jazz I dont care instrument. Im just an altoist ;P
What's wrong with Kenny Garret?????????? nutty fourths? Damn man, you obviously don't understand Garrets music if you thing it's all fourths. Brecker is the pioneer for sax but don't disrespect other artist who came after him.
Whose comments were you reading?? "Nutty" is a compliment, referring to KG's proflivity of using a lot of alternate 4th's on scales to produce the Egyptian and Asian type minors that frequently mark his compositions and solos.
Sorry but you misunderstood me. Kenny is probably my favorite sax player, and I myself play alto. In fact I've seen KG over ten times at Yoshi's ALONE; more than I have seen any other jazz show live.
This tune live is immense.. im not sure the cd version really does it justice :/ i tend to think this about quite a few of his tunes? But yeah...Genius stuff
Since your comment was directed at me, I'll respond to your offense nature. I meant, live as in, in person, not live via dvd, YouTube, etc. Aside from that, there is no reason to insult someone. Why is it that people on this site always degrade others. Shows how very stupid most typical musicians are. They should never chastise someone publicly.
you are right. I just watched this the whole way through for the first time. Unbelievable piano solo. I love how Mike is getting into it at the end. On a comic note, look at his eyes, as he's playing the harmonics and overtones at the ending......kinda funny.
