The mirror defense, made for the wishbone triple-option,first appeared in this game. It really baffled Texas. You'll notice the long runs by Texas were up the middle, not on the corners. Ara Parsegian took credit for this defense after his 1971 Cotton Bowl victory. But the Notre Dame victory was not due to Ara's defensive plan.Texas had long since adjusted it's triple option for this defense.Texas had more offensive yardage against Notre Dame in 1971 than when they won in 1970.Texas fumbled 6 times!
The wishbone is absolute greatness. With the right QB and if ran the properly way, it is unstoppable. Coaches don't use it anymore because it doesn't produce NFL ready players (particularly QB's and wide receivers). But if you're a college coach desperate for some wins, ride that 'bone!
More SWC Triple Option football, please! There seems to be a shortage of games from the 70s of Bill Yeoman's Cougars, with thier "Houston" Veer. Thanks for posting. James Street is the father of the UT 'Bone!
I was 15 and could not afford a ticket so I sold cokes to get into the game. You bought a tray of cokes for $12.50 and got a ticket every time you bought a tray. At the end of the day you would cash in your tickets. I had given up on the game and was under the west stands cashing in my tickets and missed the Cotton Speyrer catch. The crowd exploded and I ran up the ramp just in time to see the celebration in the end zone.
I was at the game with friends and we had almost given up when Eddie Phillips hit Cotton Speyrer who galloped into the end zone keeping what ultimately became our 30 game winning streak on course. In terms of drama, this game was similar to Roger Staubach's Hail Mary at Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs in 1975 (I think).
I was 12 years old, sitting in the knot-hole section in the north endzone...first time to sit away from my parents at a UT game. Kids that we were, we never doubted the outcome...it was thrilling, to say the least, and especially satisfying to see the obnoxious UCLA fans sitting in front of us deflate and slink out of the stadium. (I'm not a poor winner, but this couple used language we weren't used to hearing!) Hook 'em!!
When Speyrer caught that pass and the two UCLA guys took each other out of the play, the roar of the crowd could purportedly be heard all over Austin.
When I first saw this, I thought it was Tennessee vs UCLA. The Vols played UCLA that 1970 season as well. I think the Vols game was held in Memphis for some reason rather than Neyland Stadium in Knoxville. The Vols won that game 28-17. UCLA had a decent team that year, but their non conference schedule was brutal that season.
BTW: That was supposed to be a reply to ulises3314 as to what happened at :13. I just noticed we got flagged. I was there, but I was just shy of 8 and almost as enamored with UCLA's bear as I was with Worster, Bertlesen, Speyrer, Atessis, et al...
this is back when both teams would wear dark jerseys ,this stopped around 1971 with the exception of USC-UCLA, that stopped in 1982 when UCLA moved to the Rose Bowl..did I leave out any other rivalries that wore dark jerseys past 1971? please fill in the gaps, cause I only know what I saw from the West Coast in those days.
was a heckuva tough and thrilling win. Listening on the radio at a friend's as a kid, my dad came across the street to tell me it looked like the Longhorns had lost. I "had" to tell him, "no, Dad, we just scored at the end of the game!" He beamed.
Way to go Horns! I listened to the game on the radio and man when Cotton caught that winning td pass you should have heard the fans explode over the radio. The announcer was smart and was silent for several minutes letting us hear the noice.
wonderfalls sorry but it wasn't a foward pass the guy he threw the ball to was one yard or a half a yard behind the actual location were the ball was thrown, it look like a foward pass b/c the reciever was a moving target. TO UNDERSTAN WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT JUST PAUSE IN THE 00:13 SEC/ 13 SEC
Now I see it what happened. Phillips, the QB, clearly pitched the ball backwards legally. What causes the illusion of an illegal forward pass is that the ball bounced off the halfback's facemask/helmet, causing him to reach forward to accept the pitch.

@thetheRedundant Notre Dame didn't have too much trouble stopping the bone in the Cotton Bowl after the 1970 season!
