I was watching the original by The Beatles and I wanted to see what this Joe Cocker made of The Beatles song and I am quite impressed. Is still think The Beatles version is better though...
@KREEPNASTY1 Sorry dude but even the Fab themselves were seriously tripped out by Cocker's Little Help From My Friends. Embellishment with love is the highest compliment.
If an artist digs deeper and finds even more meaning in lyrics or tune than the original players, it may be just that - another artist's rendition - neither better nor worse: But in Joe's case he takes Beatle's tunes to a whole new level and I certainly am not alone in appreciating that fact.
@SmileyGarrish No need to apologize. And I agree that Joe definetly took a "little help from my friends" to another level..I love his version..I also believe there's some covers that blow away the original,e.g.,Manfred Mann's "Blinded by the light".. But When it comes to the Beatles, A covered song is only a small piece of the whole picture they painted with each album..Besides, Their version wasn't ranked #304 on Rolling Stone's 500 greatest songs of all time list, for nothing....
The 1st time I hurd this, I was driftingt on cloud # 9, laying on the floor, between to Hi/Fi speekers, and I swear, she went in my right ear, and went out my left ear,
Is it OK that I am just madly in love with both versions? I love the amount of respect you hear in every song Cocker covers. He isn't trying to be a Beatle, he's just singing his ass off & his heart out.
I still like the original better, because that's what I've been listening to for 20 something years, that said I think Joe Cocker has done some amazing covers.....I might even like his "With A Little Help From My Friends" better than the original, slowing it down just seemed to give more meaning to the words somehow....anyway LOVE THE BEATLES!!!!
@gronad, yeah man did this EVER rock the airwaves!!! the BEATLES suggested that JOE record this song! I mean , how cool can you get? Joe wanted to record ''golden slumbers'' and mc cartney said '' youre not having that ''
I had been looking all over for this title. Founf your posting by accident. Very grateful you posted this. Nice. His vioce fits this song like a glove.
Joe Cocker........what a unique voice. One of those great talents whos music seems timeless. I love listening to his music today just like I did years ago. Thanks Joe for rocking us here in North Carolina.
Jimmy Page plays the guitar solo just like he did on With A Little Help From My Friends. I have no idea who the rest of the band is. It's not a pedal steel either, more like his trusty Yardbirds/Led Zeppelin Fender Tele with the Hip-Shot B-bender.
nonsense!!! Beatles version is very nice and polished. Cocker's version is all balls and guts:; something all you fairies out the wouldn't understand. They're both good -- just different. My memories of the Marine Corps always bring be back to Cocker. He Rocks!!!
nonsense!!! Beatles version is very nice an polished. Cocker's version is all balls and guts:; something all you fairies out the wouldn't understand. They're both good -- just different. My memories of the Marine Corps always bring be back to Cocker. He Rocks!!!
I know this is random, but if anyone could give me the name of the band and the song of this song, it goes something kinda like this: She really lays upon the roses in the shadows, she really lays upon the roses in the night; or something like that, I really don't know, I tried finding this song forever, and never could, so if anyone could tell me the name of that song and the band who sings it, that would be awesome, thanks! :)
It would appear that most (not all) people born after say ...1970, don't realize how songs were passed around "back in the day". Everyone was singing and covering, moreover playing/singing as tributes to each others works. There was a mutual admiration and support for one another. Part of the beauty of Music is it is not a competition. Well, at least not until the money grubbing record labels and lawyers get involved. Y'know the business part!
Joe Cocker's version or The Beatles version of this on "Abbey Road?"
To me, this sounds terrible compared to Paul McCartney's masterpiece on The Beatles best album, "Abbey Road." Ringo's percussions were fantastic on "Abbey Road" esp during this song.
I hate to say which one I like more, but man does Cocker gets a hold of this one! There's so much soul in that voice and the guitar work is so tasteful! Its not like he's just doing a cover. Its more like he was breathing a new and inspired life into this already great Beatles classic.
i can only say i enjoy this version more than the beatles....however i just like the song first day i got abbey road i listened to this song 987676 times it was so good....it's not better than the original it's not worse it's just different and not even by much really
How can people argue whether this version or the Beatles' version is better?? Both differing interpretations, both wonderful songs. I love this one very much and always will. 'Nuff said!
I actually love both of the versions. I mean, i'd lean more towards the Beatles version, just 'cause i love them :) But this is still an awesome version!
The strength of this cover is the vocal interpretation. However if you are not so taken with Joe's version of this Beatles track what is your view of Wilson Picket's cover of Hey Jude?
@thebleechers I hope people aren't saying one is better than the other, because that's not the intention of this video. I love both for different reasons. However, I much prefer Joe's version because of his voice, like @DickusCopernicus mentioned. Joe has a very unique and powerful voice that I fell in love with after hearing "Marjorine" for the first time in high school.
@petesmontreux sorry, just responding to the comment that this version is "better than the original." I don't want to take anything away from Joe. He is a very unique talent and I think he's been very respectful with Beatles material.
@thebleechers Right. I tend to see these kind of songs as tributes or re-imaginings rather than straight-up covers. The covering artists realize the greatness of the songs and want to take a stab at it themselves, in a new and fresh way. The best example I can think of is Stevie Ray Vaughan's version of Jimi's 'Little Wing', not a cover, but a tribute. And It's incredible. Another good one is Jeff Healey's version of 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', which, IMO, is the greatest 'cover' ever.
@petesmontreux agree 100% Other great examples are Hendrix covering Cream on the Lulu show in the UK, and a really interesting take on Eleanor Rigby by Aussie band Zoot. I think people making those x is better than y comparisons definitely missed the point.
i agree totally, beatles are my one of my top 3 fav's of all time. And i like Joe's Version of this song and help from my friends, he just has the voice that resonates with me, not to say that the beatles dont, i just like his voice on those songs
same with bob dylan, hes one of my fav's but i like dave matthews bands version of watchtower way better, jimi's is better to........................
@liamj0927 Depends on the source. Beatlesongs lists Harrison on bass on this track. Wikipedia (FWIW) states "George Harrison and John Lennon both played a Fender VI on some songs which McCartney played piano or guitar... Harrison also played a right-handed Fender Jazz Bass on two songs from Abbey Road." In "The Beatles Recording Sessions" it lists those two songs as Carry that Weight and Golden Slumbers. Harrison had his bass at the Abbey Road sessions, so Beatlesongs might be correct too. :)
@thebleechers Actually mate it's Paul on the bass in the original track. But agreed, nothing stands up to the original, but still joe cocker has such a powerfull voice and yuo can't tell he sings with feelling. Very nice
@thebleechers , you must be on drugs. this is an excellent version of the song. i love the Beatles, and i love their version, but that doesn't make this any less of a version just because the Beatles also recorded it. this is the track the radio stations chose to play when i was a kid. i never even knew there was a Beatles version until i was 20.
@thebleechers I thought McCartney was the bass player. Are you saying George Harrison played bass on "Came in through the Bathroom window?" Did Harrison play bass on any other tunes?
@thebleechers George Harrison doesn't play the bass on the original version of this song from Abbey Road. Harrison only played bass on a few songs, they are: Honey Pie, Drive My Car, Birthday, Rock'n'Roll Music, Golden Slumbers, and possibly She Said She Said, as McCartney has said he doesn't remember the recording session that yielded that particular song. Paul played lead guitar on a few, as did John (John also played bass on a couple), Paul played drums on a few too.
