I had a 3.4 Impala with a leaking FPR but the thing is the idle is fine. Sometimes shake as all cars do, but lightly. Sometimes I would smell raw fuel with no CE light on. I replaced it, as I need to because I feared the leak would get worse and fire would occur. It sure was hell replacing it because I have to fight my skinny self through the labryinth of hoses in the way just to replace the FPR and the TB had to be removed as well. Everything works well now!!
Since the fuel regulator is in the intake manifold, the vacuum at idle and low speed will make the regulator leak even more. Does anyone know why GM created such a bizarre intake manifold and fuel injection system?????
Hey Duane, What would the remedy be on the same engine, same symptoms, in a 90 Astro? I don't know if it has the same intake, but I doubt it. Any suggestions?
Great tip Duane, also after scan data gave me this direction on a few, I have while under pressure koeo open the throttle plate and used a small lighted mirror. Sometimes you can watch them drip. Of course fuel trims are max neg and mostly codes are set for rich o2's with these.
Great Video! I've had leaking Fuel Pressure Regulators in my cars before. To test them, I've connected a vacuum pump to see if it held vacuum. They're the kind where they have a vacuum line that connects. Of course, another way to test it would be to smell the vacuum line for raw gasoline. But, I had never seen one without the vacuum line. Thank you for the great information.
Hey Duane. Another great video as usual. I'm currently in auto-tech school, and I have a question. Every scan tool I've seen- Tech 2, Genisys, Snap-On shows fuel trims in percentages, plus or minus. I'm curious where the 80/128 numbers come from, because this is news to me. Thank you for your time and great videos again sir.
Another great video! I love the klaxon. Wouldn't it be great if a Klaxon went off when the FPR started leaking and maybe General Quarters when the "nut kit" starts leaking! LOL Dont' forget to view the CPFI Internal Leak video too. It illustrates the "nut kit" leak. Sadly, you rarely receive even a code for either but you can smell the gas fumes and loss of power.
@CoolasIce2 No, actually, I do not. It is common sense. Dwayne is a very intelligent technician, but, like the rest of us, he is not perfect and he makes mistakes.
@sweetlikeADAM Dude seriously?? You don't know what a 4.3 is?? The infamous chevy 4.3 V6. This engine is in S10 Pickups, S10 Blazers, Fullsize pickups, Oldsmobile bravada, he even says in the video oldsmobile. that means GM. And you are worried about a minute amount of grease on an Oring?? How does grease corrode anything?? It does the opposite. I am speaking from over 18 years experience as an auto tech. L1 advanced and ASE Master Tech. Step into the real world for a moment.
@ktumbleweed - Infamous? My experience with this engine has actually been quite good. The CPI is the problem, the engines are great. I've seen several go 200+, and I have a '94 with 326k...
@Mysterio2276 Dude, reread my comment, and also read "sweetlikeADAM" comment that I was responding to. He asked " a 4.3 What?" He did not know what engine a 4.3 was!! I believe that you took my statement out of context. Maybe I should of said the popular 4.3, or very common 4.3. I think the 4.3 V6 is an excellent engine. I am a mechanic, not an English Major. LOL!!!
@Chevyboi1488 4.3 a boat anchor? Your 350 is a much better engine? Yes I would take a 350 over a 4.3 , but that does not make a 4.3 a bad motor? A 4.3 is a 5.7 minus two cylinders. You will find the same intake setup on a 5.7 from the same year models. The starters are the same. pistons , rods , bearings , pushrods , rocker arms , water pump , they are all the same! 350 gets better gas mileage? Not according to EPA ratings! I would need to see some scientific proof!
If you are that worried about grease, you can use a light oil, but I'm not aware of any place that it is *not* a good idea to apply a little silicon grease on an o-ring. It helps the o-ring seat without binding or rolling off. I ruined many o-rings over the years before I found this little tid bit.
D, when say above or below adding or taking away fuel 128, is that stft plus Ltft for both banks??? What is the 128 value??

I think this is one of GMs worst designs. One thing to check the last one I worked on with this problem filled the oil with gasoline

@beefystik The 80/128 numbers are how fuel trim was displayed before OBD 2 came along. It was called Block Learn back then.

And why would you put GREASE in a fuel channel? You're just asking to have to replace the regulator again...
sweetlikeADAM 11 months ago
@sweetlikeADAM its just a dab of grease so the orings would slide nice to the orifice
wangbungal 11 months ago
@wangbungal "Just" a dab of grease can clog and/or corrode a regulator within a few gallons.

4.3 liter is the best boat anchor in the world. thats about all its good for. useless. my 350 sb gets better gas mileage then them.

@sweetlikeADAM Buddy, I believe any GREASE will be dissolved by the gasoline, so your point is moot.
