@chavezchavez556 yep, all stock. This is also my defensive gun. I've heard it can cause problems if you use it defensively, and the trigger is not stock. I'm pondering getting a Glock 34 for competition, though. It has a better trigger, I've heard.
@drzmanproject All the guys I shoot with have mucho respect for the guys that qualify with stock glocks . I have heard the Gen 4 G-19 has one of the best doa triggers around. That is so cool Beach, and yourself do it together . One of my shooting mentors has a G-17 long slide with a trigger job that is like shooting a 6" barrel revolver in 22lr but they are really hard to find...........
You can use an exposed serpa like that? I was under the impression that it had to be from concealment. I am going to use my serpa next time if thats the case.
@SuperShooterX The Serpa is IDPA compliant. The Classifier is shot with no concealment - the rules (at idpa dot com) explain that it is intended to be a straightforward measure of marksmanship. In competitions, you can use the Serpa, but you must draw from concealment (e.g., with a jacket on to cover the pistol).
It's actually faster to turn in the direction your weapon is holstered. we are talking little bits of time, but it's faster and safer (I'm surprised the RO let you turn like that because it's very close to a 180 violation)
@KillaGorilla13 (Just little tiny things that add up to save you time overall) --> normally when you enter the sport as fairly skilled shooters, you have already passed a large part of the learning curve....now that I've been shooting for a year competitively, it's about trying to save halves of seconds, not large portions of time like when I first started. You both look pretty darn fast...SS is a great starting classification
@KillaGorilla13 Thanks for the encouragement! Yeah it seems like the farther one goes, the more work is required for ever smaller gains. The challenge for growth feels good.
@KillaGorilla13 Yeah, at two different ranges, RO said it was shooter preference - at this range they asked the shooter which way they would pivot, and the group would then move to the safer direction. I will work on pivoting the way you mention; it'll be a challenge because of an old ankle injury, and probably being left-handed (now that I have a left-handed holster, I can start competing left-handed, and there will be pivoting harmony, lol).
@KillaGorilla13 Tactically, I'd thought it might be better to pivot the holster side away from the threat, helping with retention in case the threat is close and going for the gun.
@KillaGorilla13 This weekend I shot the Classifier again, but left-handed. So now pivoting left makes more sense. Since I'm so unused to shooting left handed, I purposely slowed things down - but too much. Added 15 seconds to my score. Drat.
@KillaGorilla13 for the challenge, lol. Also, it felt weird to tell people I was really left-handed, but never shot left-handed. Actually, there's a guy at my local range who is left-handed, but he always shoots right.
@drzmanproject I know a lot of ppl who shoot opposite of what you might expect based on eye dominance rather than what hand they are "strong" with. For example, while I'm left eye dominant, I have "trained" my right eye to be my dominant/semi-dominant eye....a good friend was left eye dominant, but just learned to shoot lefty rather than training his eye
@drzmanproject Also the main reason is that when faced with an actual threat, it's instinct to turn towards the non-dominant side (ie: a right hander would turn left). IIRC that's one of the reasons old-school pistol training focused on turning as you draw with the dominant hand, facing the attacker with your dominant side while firing one-handed. Not as stable, but more natural for most.
@drzmanproject Some advice I can offer is hold grip of the pistol where the gun naturally indexes in your hand. Also start with your hands in the surrender position so you are not having to raise your arms to draw your pistol. Shoot with both eyes open. This are some things I have learned trying to qualify in IPSC and USPSA shooting competitions. This should bring time down and help improve your shooting skills. Good luck and always have fun!
@jennamoneyshot1 Thanks Jenna, it seems like in IDPA, hands are down at your sides, and other sports like IPSC, USPSA, and Bianchi Cup are in the surrender position. I definitely need more practice drawing, refining my grip, and shooting with both eyes open! Thanks again, DrZ
Nice job, man. The classifier is a good skills test even though it's a little boring. In fact, everyone's racing to get Master so they don't have to shoot the Classifier again :)
@drzmanproject Yes, supposed to be annual but that's only if you want to shoot a major match like a regional. It's a good test but the most important thing is your overall match performance. Track your progress there and you'll get bumped up due to that, instead of the classifier. Keep shooting man, u guys are doing great.
Well first off it was a great shoot. You knew where you made your mistakes and how to recover from them. Great recovery about the fallen mag. Did not show it in the video but guess you did do was a slow walk thru with weapon drawn. I like to walk thru all my shoots and how it will look to me before starting. Still CoNGRATS! and hope ya keep up the great shooting.
@GrwizzlyBea Thanks Grwizzly, we'd printed off the Classifier course of fire, so that was familiar to us; the fun stage at the end was already in progress by the time we moved to that station, so we just watched others do it first. Thanks for watching!
First off, man that looks like fun. Wish I could give you pointers on how to shot better, but I'm right there with you on the learning. Looks like you guys are getting better and better.
@Cr0cket20 Cr0cket, ya gotta try it, certainly no replacement for the fun of going out in the desert after work or hangin' with Nutnfancy, but having specific benchmarks to shoot for is also great fun.
I didn't get a chance to finish watching vid and skimmed some comments. Note turning on the side of your gun is faster and has less chance of swinging left/right of target on draw. Also you can get a the larger G34/35 slide release and mag release an still be legal SSP since they were an offered option for all Glocks at one point.
@midwestiowashooter Great comment, thanks! We were discussing this, because some turned one way and others turned another. I probably felt more comfortable swinging left because I'm left handed, but I wasn't sure which would be better. All coaching comments are welcome!
You will get better the more you do, the main thing is it looked like you guys were having fun and thats what really counts. The range you were at spent some money on concrete.
@biguy525 We've been really impressed with this range. We need to go back and do our share of helping the place out- yesterday we had to leave so Beach could get to a big airsoft match, and so we missed out on some chores like adding block at the end of the concrete. They recently added several feet of berm at the top, also.
You guys did REALLY well. DrZman, you did great considering you're a lefty. Beachhead looked like a pro. He seemed to go through the motions very smoothly. That was a nice recovery with the dropped magazine. Do you think shooting those evil gummy bears and fruit loops helped? ;-)
@richardah1 Thanks Richard, I'm thinking about trying to qualify left-handed, but as there's no slide release on the right side of the gun, I'll have to rack the slide when reloading, and I've heard that's a little slower. I'd probably just leave the mag release on the left, as I can actuate it with my left middle finger, and not mess it up for Beach. Yeah, he is very polished, lol, I'm sure the evil gummi bears and fruit loops helped him out, lol.
@drzmanproject I love Glocks for many reasons but I've been thinking of getting an S&W M&P for this specific reason. The magazine release can be switched and the slide release is ambidextrous. I just don't want to give up the Glocks benefits of parts availability, track record and reliability. I'm impressed you taught yourself how to shoot right handed and you do it well. It's hard for us lefties to find a good fit.
@JAndersonIV Thanks J, as shooting sports go, IDPA is one of the least expensive. It's about a shooter's skill with their regular concealed carry pistol not about tricked out race guns that are very expensive (see my video Massad Ayobb - Why IDPA?). We paid $10 each to shoot the Classifier, and we pay $22.95 for a box of 100 9mm rounds at Wal-Mart. The Classifier requires 90 rounds. The minimum number of mags needed is 2. More mags saves time reloading at the range.
@drzmanproject $10 isn't bad at all! Thank you for the quick response. This seems like it would be a ton of fun. Congrats on you and Beach already starting half way up the totem pole!
@ZombieTactics Yeah, the trade off of speed and accuracy is excruciating, and part of mastery, I'm learning, is to be able to sense internally where that optimal cadence/balance is for the best score. Also, it's remarkably humbling to see how easily the brain gets addled under pressure - and this is just a game! We had seasoned competitors there who forgot to turn off their safety, and there were a number of equipment and ammunition failures.
@whitey211 lol, nah, I read somewhere that the move from Novice to Marksman is "meteoric" and the move from Marksman to Sharpshooter is "fast". Then it gets interesting trying to get to Expert and Master. I've found fellow shooters to be very helpful and supportive. I'd encourage anyone to give it a try.
@hinckleypoland Yeah, we were all amazed at that. Beach and I had talked about what we could do if we dropped a mag, but he was so smooth that I wonder if he actually practiced that while I was at work, lol.
@TacticalHadoken Beach said he actually forgot to reload there and realized it only after he went to low ready. But he's so fast that it's not apparent to us mere mortals, lol.
@CampfireTalk Thanks CT, it has been fun, and it's cool to see the guys at the range share in the mentoring, and show respect for Beach's developing skills.
Good reaction to the mistake ~@5:00. I hope to classify as Sharpshooter on my first attempt. 2nd match tmrw
