Self-deportation is not a federal program, it is an answer to the question "how can people who are already here become residents?" The answer is that they would have to voluntarily leave and apply within their home country. If you cut off all handouts to illegal immigrants and make it practically impossible for them to get a job they have very little incentive to stay. That doesn't mean you need to deport them, just stop giving them anything, including work. Romney is right on this one.

The issue with what he said has nothing to do with illegal immigration, it has to do with the government determining what is humane in terms of deportation. So if a president is set with Newt saying Grandparents can't be deported, how hard is it going to be to say illegal parents with legal kids is "in-humane"?
