Kaplan Turbines are for lower head (around 20m). Three-Gorges Dam head is about 80m, so they need Francis turbines

I had some idea about the size of these hydroelectric turbines but now seen this animation it make me wonder how many of those big wind turbines we see spread along some countryside would be necessary to produce as much power as one of these. Or how many of those ´´Pelamis`` (wave power) for that matter!

Each of the turbines hasd the capacity of 700 MW. A typical new wind terbine is around 1-1.5 MW. So you can calculate that it equals 500 to 700 of the big wind terbines. The three gorges dam produced more power than all the wind turbines in Germany and US in 2008.
