I think it's just a circular piece of metal. You can make similar sounds with a slide, but I'm guessing the metal he uses has sharper edges to create that kind of "gratey" sound with the thicker strings.

I love almost all the noise I've heard except maybe some of the less thought through stuff like this (though I've enjoyed other Yoshihide things) I don't know anyone who listens to noise that has a "holier than thou" attitude. I know a few people who get frustrated that there isn't equality between pop and the avant garde but this "holier than thou" thing is foreign to me. Furthermore, I'd say the same to you, if you didn't act like you were better than those who enjoy this I'd ignore you too.
