I think it's just a circular piece of metal. You can make similar sounds with a slide, but I'm guessing the metal he uses has sharper edges to create that kind of "gratey" sound with the thicker strings.
Ah yes, thats exactly it, we don't 'get' it. And thus, we can't be part of your awesome club, but you didn't want us anyway, cause we don't have good enough taste to 'understand' it. I don't care how much bloody skill it might take to create the sound, it still sounds like shit.
I wasn't saying he was full of himself I was bitching at you for saying you only minded as much because he was doing it on guitar. I don't mind that you hate this because honestly I don't think it's that great, I like the sound he's making but it's not something I'd listen to everyday like some noise. What I was bitching about was that you seem to think that the guitar is so holy that it shouldn't be experimented with. Therefore, you is cunt.
Okay then I'll put it bluntly. I hate ALL noise music. From this to Merzbow. The being on guitar part doesn't make that much difference.
The point I'm trying to make, is I don't mind experimenting, I dislike the whole holier than thou mindset of the people who are into it. Otherwise I would just ignore it.
I love almost all the noise I've heard except maybe some of the less thought through stuff like this (though I've enjoyed other Yoshihide things) I don't know anyone who listens to noise that has a "holier than thou" attitude. I know a few people who get frustrated that there isn't equality between pop and the avant garde but this "holier than thou" thing is foreign to me. Furthermore, I'd say the same to you, if you didn't act like you were better than those who enjoy this I'd ignore you too.
@witchdoctor66 Had to dig a few years back to find a good comment to rage to, eh? In the meantime I've actually become quite fond of noise music. What can I say, I was an overly opinionated teenager.
It's not a club, some like avant-garde, some don't. Don't try to make us look like snobs. I really don't considerate me as a snob. I sincerly like this. Listen to what john cage said about sounds, you'll get it, every sounds is good. The fact that it's a guitar isn't important, if you like the guitar watch Christian Marclay's video when he drag a guitar on the floor with a car xD. You don't get it, it doesn't make you less clever than us, just less happy, because you can't enjoy what we enjoy
Anyone who says this is not music and that anyone can do it.... well.. do it then.
I bet you would have a hell of a time playing any song without the key elements of music which this one "lacks"... it's Avante-gard, it's not supposed to be enjoyed by all, just by those who get it, and for those that get it it's enjoyed enough to make up for those who do not.
Perhaps this is why he also plays beautiful music... see the video where he plays live in copenhagen, thats ''nice music'' isn't it? I liked it, its a really interesting study on acoustics and composition, haha
Why can people appreciate and praise Hendrix for several seconds of crazy guitar feedback for one song...but cannot appreciate an entire SONG of crazy guitar feedback?
This is the same type of guitar feedback that Hendrix fans loved...only longer in length.
Dude... things like this is beyond our grasp for the present (mind) could only have hints of what evolution could create. But I tell you this r evolutionary artist such as Otomo creates art not for the present but for the future generations to decipher. Don't read him or you'll just get scRewed man.
well i wouldnt say i like this particular artist but just cause something doesnt adhere to conventional standards of rhythm doesnt mean its not music.
absolute crap, anyboody who likes this is lying to seem more elitist or avant garde. This is not music its terrible and the worse part is that people pretend to like it.

What the fuck was that. Someone said that I had to check this guy out. I think his studies in the invention of instruments and sound are interesting but I have yet to hear a successful track
what is a 'successful' track? you need MTV rotation ? verse/chorus/verse? as far as Otomo goes, you have either listened to a very small percentage or just dont have the ears/soul for this kind of music.
I'm gonna have to agree with you. Personally, I like a little bit of melody or groove. If it's going to be random noises with no timing or key it would be nice if the noises were fun to listen to. But whatever, they called it music theory for a reason.

I like the way it sounds. I'm not sure if even I get it, but I like hearing people experimenting with sounds.

I don't know, maybe I wouldn't mind so much if he wasn't doing it on a guitar. That just seems insulting to actual guitar playing.

@GordonCSA "That just seems insulting to actual guitar playing."... one of the most obnoxiously ignorant statements I've read in quite some time.

@GordonCSA2 A calm response to a comment of that nature doesn't necessarily equate to "rage", as you put it, in my opinion.
