Modern rounds fired by the T-72/T-90's 2A46 gun will penetrate the armor of the M-1.
However, the problem is at what range the 2A46 can defeat the M-1's armor.
Without giving away the store, by the time the M-1 is within the lethal range of the 2A46, the T-72/T-90 has been within lethal range of the M-256 for quiet some time.
Add to this the differences between the tanks FCS and crew safety features and life becomes nasty, brutish, and short for the Tango crew.
@Waltham1892 the t90 can shoot guided rockets which are deadly precise and have a superb range so acutaly the abrams wont even have time to come close enough to get off a shot at the t90
The ability of a HEAT warhead to penetrate armor is a function of its diameter, and since a tube launched ATGM is limited to the bore there isn't enough to kill an MBT.
In fact, the SNIPER system is not intended to be used against tanks, but targets like helo's and ATGM vehicles.
Lastly, if I'm in range of a SNIPER system, the SNIPER system is in range of my TOW, Hellfire and artillery.
@franknbeans4761 Guided missiles are beeing used by the T-90 wich gives it the power to fire beyond visual range. The other benefit is that the missile always attacks the roof, no tank has a good roofarmor.
@DeeZanic That is true about all tank armor on the roof, but I was mainly basing this off of all the missiles in the video not gaining altitude when they attack their target and only having a linear path, not attacking the top of the targets.
@TulaKirill The main service round for Russian is the Mango round. It cannot penetrate the frontal armor but can still penetrate the rear, and rear sides of the vehicle.
there are large stocks of Mango rounds but there is also Svinets-1 rounds and now Svinets-2 is being offered. The producers of the latest T-90 upgrade with Relict armour say it's frontal armour cannot be penetrated by ANY in service tank round (M829A3 included)
@tass101 Relikt armor is amazing, and is impenetrable. Of course a Javelin missile could still destroy a T-90 with Relikt, but that has nothing to do with this.
The US is designing the M829A4 to defeat Relikt but that's several years away.
But as for Relikt, it isn't in service & no orders have been placed by the Russian Ground Forces for the upgrade variant of the T-90 that uses Relikt.
But as for the Svinets, it isn't the main service round & can't penetrate the same amount as the M829A3.
"But as for Relikt, it isn't in service & no orders have been placed by the Russian Ground Forces for the upgrade variant of the T-90 that uses Relikt"
yes they have...T-72 and T-90 tanks are getting upgraded with among other things with Relict armour.
But the main news is that project 'Armata' (next gen Russian tank) is going ahead. It has been described as a revolutionary design - a T-34 for the 21st century
@franknbeans4761 The conventional under calibre round is an obsolete technology. This video is about guided missiles. They have a longer range and much more power. I don't think any tank can survive a hit of such a missile.
@franknbeans4761 "The weird thing is, the rounds that the T-72, T-80, and T-90 use cannot penetrate the frontal armor of the Abrams." Who told you that?
@franknbeans4761 Projectiles that can't penetrate armor of Abrams are NOT in use in Soviet/Russian army since 1973. Update your information from time to time
@nikomo37 That actually isn't true. The rounds that can penetrate Abrams armor are the Mango round and other varying ATGM's. But they are not used by every tank.
As a tanker who has crewed an M-1 and lead an M-1 platoon, I don't believe anything other than a heavy dual warhead ATGM, like Hellfire or TOW III, can take an M-1 in its frontal arc.
The bore launched ATGM's used by the Russians, whose diameter is limited by the bore of the gun, stand no chance at all unless they get a flank or rear shot.
If I were to fight an M-1, I would want to get in close and use an APDFS round.
WTF the modern war has no need in tanks. Any stupid Arabian may easily burn any vehicle with RPG
