God gave Israel through Moses there was an annual calendar of festivals. These are described in Exodus 23:14-17 and in more detail in Leviticus 23 and with other information in Numbers 28 and 29 and in Deuteronomy 16.
These festivals were clearly ordained by God. They were times of joy and rejoicing before the Lord. The Festivals were a witness to the World.
If amusement is sin then it is sin outside the church as much as in! Jesus fed their flesh (just not with sin) then preached to the goats!
@TheCRJonathon No one has ever claimed that amusement is sin. Amusement during worship is not a function of a worship service. God has outlined how worship is to be conducted. Dramas, clowns, and concerts are not part of God's clear distinguishing marks of a proper worship service.
Charles Spurgeon was way ahead of his time. Or was he? I admire Charles Spurgeon and what I see today in the ranks of Christianity is appalling. It seems like people have gone after what I call "Cotton Candy Theology" and it's all about money, and appealing to the masses. hype, emotionalism, sensationalism, and drama seem to be the norm in most church's today. If the Holy Spirit was taken from the world I believe that to the greater part of religion, It would be business as usual on Sunday.
A timely and under-preached message for the church today. @ fish
Please don't compare today's distracting entertainment to the miracles of Christ. God's purpose in the use of signs and wonders was done from a heart of compassion toward a people in need of the knowledge of the source. What is being provided in the modern seeker sensitive movements is from a heart of shame toward the gospel and driven by the greed of numbers in most cases.
Amazing to imagine, that what we see today, was a problem even then. Most likely what was called scandelous then, is commonplace now. Much enjoyed this, and posted it, myself. Thank you.
hearing this makes me think of the use of pop music and guitars in today's churches, in some i've even seen light hearted games played with the audiene, it seems many churches have shifted thier focus on entertaining people rather than showing people the reality of God's view towards sin, the gospel should never lose it's offence towards those who won't believe
The full explanation of this video posting underlines the battle which has continually been fought among professing evangelicals. As a former follower of Finney and the Assemblies of God explanation of salvation, I have concluded that Spurgeon demonstrated and exemplified the true teaching of Scripture.
some of the churches that actualy ARE in the communities are presenting a very shallow gospel. they are expanding empires. thier ministries are mere colonies. their are two gianormous churches right now that I wont mention, who are clearly in competition with eachother. they will cater to anyone in any way to get the masses. it's not the gospel anymore. it's a social club, where people can go feel spiritual in thier own way, or get self esteem, or "hook up" w/ other believers. thats all.
i can only speak of the churches I've been to, and I've been to alot. no matter what kind of church it was, there was always somewhat of a tendancy to try somehow to entertain. one experience in particular that I'll never forget was a church that had a bunch of coffee they were giving to the young people, who then went to their seat with the coffee, while the show started. lights, music, mantras, then came the message...prerecorded from the other church on a giant screen. woeful.
It is clear that those that get offended dont like this message cause instead of the Word, they like all those weird stuff as dance, speak non sense, and get mislead to think they are something or have some kind of power, THE WORD THE WORD THE WORD
The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.
19As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
Daniel 12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
It's often been called "the watered-down gospel" provided for no other purpose than to attract more people to the church and convert them to the doctrines of the local church rather than to be followers of Jesus. Jesus once said to His disciples that the world will hate them because the world first hated Him. Why did the world hate Jesus? Because He was a threat to the "status quo" of the world, threatened their way of a sinners life, and came to change them from the inside out.
May I encourage anyone interested in learning more on Spurgeon's addressing of this problem look for what is known as "The Down-Grade Controversy." He was accused of being an alarmist in his day on this subject, which in less than a hundred years since has gone well beyond his addressed concerns.
John MacArthur also addresses this subject in his book "Ashamed of the Gospel".
Amen to NO FLUFF. I bought into fluff before.

RM, this video is not only a blessing, it is a wake-up call to the church to repent for preaching their Christ-less "gospel".
As an aside, the sheep are truly fed and the goats are truly amused.
