OMG I can't believe I read half of that. I'm in the Cal Band, and I admire the fact that davis' band still attends stuff if the students don't. One thing though, paying " between $30-$200 out of their OWN POCKET to offset the cost for the band to go" is just dumb. I'll be the first to admit that my school spirit doesn't overlap my wallet. I think Davis/Cal should just make a super-sized UC band once a year and march down to shitty UCLA.

The Cal Band is funded only on private funds. The band has fund raisers to raise money, or alumni and parents donate money to the Cal Band Fund. The band performs at various functions to raise money. Our budget for next year, so we hope, is around $400,000.
That will include trips to all away games (Colorado State, Oregon, Washington) for the SHB, a full band at UCLA and Stanfurd, and possibly, a bowl game. It also includes all the Big Game Week activities.
We also have the Cal Alumni Band play during a football game, so the band pays for their expenses to make it out to Berkeley (their hotels, airfare, transportation, food, etc).
Wow, 400K. That is a nice chunk of change. Also, awesome you guys are able to put the alumni up for that game.
So the whole budget runs off of donations and the Cal Band fund, which I assume is an endowment? Not a penny from athletics or from the university? That must be one big endowment if that's true.
Oh, forgot to mention, the UC Davis band's budget is 1/10th that amount. We still make it to all games, but we don't fly: we take buses, vans and cars. And let me tell ya, you haven't lived until you've driven to North Dakota for the weekend ;)
This video is awesome. And in case no one has noticed, rankings aren't actually indicative of where you can get the best education, nor is the number of people turned down by each school. If they turned more people down, that just means they got more applications. Three years ago UC Santa Barbara had the lowest acceptence rate of all the UCs. Stop being haters, it's stupid, fruitless, and pathetic.
This one goes out to all of those who kept saying that the Cal Band was funded by our ASUC. This is from our elections ballot:
"Student Life Fee Referendum
A $12.00 per semester mandatory student fee is proposed (beginning in Fall 2007 and continuing for 10 years, increasing by $0.75 every Fall semester and growing to a maximum of $18.75 by 2016-17) to support ASUC SUPERB, Student Musical Activities (the Cal Band, UC Choral Ensembles, & UC Jazz Ensembles),
graduate student groups, to release funds for the ASUC Student Government to reallocate to undergraduate student groups, and to be incorporated into student financial aid need assessments. Do you approve of this fee?
"Berkeley Outreach"? More like Berkeley Extension. All the CSUs don't have the same colors and they all extend from one campus as well, can you explain what happened there?
Cal is better than UC Davis and I'm sure that more than 90% of your student body applied to Cal and did not get in. That's why having colors like ours and our fight song is appropriate. You want to be like Berkeley.
Only the best of the UC system can go to Berkeley and UCLA. For everyone else, there's Davis.
yeah...you keep saying that. Im sure all the stanford kids say that about cal, and all the princeton kids say that about stanford. who really gives a shit? if it gives you an ego boost, then fine WE WORSHIP YOU BECAUSE CAL IS RANKED BATTER. HAIL CAL PPL.
That's easy. YALE would only fund the new UC campuses if they adopted the blue and gold, made so familar by UC Berkeley. UCLA was only allowed to change to "true" or "powder" blue because they were going to be a division I football team.
Holy crap, people. Aggies do not want to be Bears. As an Aggie, I can now officially say it's because you all are a bunch of assholes. Seriously, Davis is nothing like Berkeley, and I'm sure we're ALL happy to keep it that way. Oh wait, we do have your school colors. And why would that happen? Dunno, because Davis used to be a Berkeley outreach? Go figure.
"i am better than you at everything. end of story. why don't you just go back to beating it to videos of middle schoolers singing britney spears songs. there must be tons, but i'm sure you already knew that."
That might just be my best bet for now because beating it to you won't get the job done.
What's with the hating? Us aggies don't hate anyone? Oh, I know why! It's because you people at Cal couldn't get into an Ivy League caliber school. Unlike you, at least we're content.
It's funny that you call us Stanfurd rejects, when you could not even get into Cal. Sorry, but it does not work that way. You have to have been able to match Berkeley's prestige or higher in order to knock us for not going to an Ivy League or Stanfurd.
Using your logic, you guys are:
Ivy League rejects.
Stanfurd rejects.
Berkeley rejects.
UCLA rejects.
UCSD rejects.
...and the list goes on. Try getting into a school of our caliber and then come talk.
I did get into Cal (but not UCLA)and know a lot of people there. I simply chose open country over the congested (ghetto) east bay. By virtue of the fact that your name is CalBears, you're someone who's who proud to be at Cal, but you've let this go too far and let your head get too big; get over yourself.
By the way, it's Stanford not Stanfurd. Way to try by sounding out your words :-)
Yeah, trying to correct me on my spelling of StanFUrd. Like I said before, let the big boys play with the big boys and we'll let you children play together. It's a rivalry thing that we have here and we spell Stanfurd that way in the East Bay.
I really do believe that you were admitted to Berkeley (wink, wink) and chose UCD. I really do believe you.
I've been reading what you've been replying to others and seeing that you're damn full of yourself. I'm a Cal alum and my sister (who's now a Dr.) is a UCD Alum. You're an embarrassment to California. Dumbshit, get over yourself.
PS My sister also chose UCD over Cal and was a proud member of the Cal Aggie Band Uh
I'm sure you are a Cal alum and that the story about your sister is true (wink, wink), but why is it that your username was created today (March 20) was only used to post that comment 6 hours ago?
Obviously you're a jealous UCD Aggie that could not become a Cal Bear. By the way, any Cal alum would not refer to the UCD band as the "Cal Aggie" band, even though they use that name. Just some tips for you stupid UCD Aggies.
"i saw the cal band perform while i was inebriated and didn't find any attractive people in the entire group."
I know what you meant, do you think I go to Davis and can't read? I saw you while I was drunk too and I didn't find you all that attractive either. I go to Cal and I am for sure smarter than you. You go to Davis.
i am better than you at everything. end of story. why don't you just go back to beating it to videos of middle schoolers singing britney spears songs. there must be tons, but i'm sure you already knew that.
hi calbears, i'll spell out my last comment for you because you were obviously too inept to understand. i saw the cal band perform while i was inebriated and didn't find any attractive people in the entire group. band-uh on the other hand is filled with good looking people sober or not. but i'm sure you've already realized all of this since you go to cal and you're so much smarter than everyone else. leave the band-uh alone and let them do what they do best: kick ass and party hard.
I guess you guys have to resort to name calling and we all know why. I don't feel like we're on Wild 'n' Out, I feel like we're filming the next UC Davis commercial. gmaull and jslares will come out in the end and say:
"UC Davis: For those who can't get into Berkeley or UCLA or UCSD"
Slares, I have not done crack before, but ask your mom about me. I've done her.
Hey that's me!!! Still can't believe UCSD or UCLA didn't accept a 4.22 student but let in this asshole with a 3.71 because he plays basketball. One word - lame. Oh! Have fun standing in line..it's what all the rage at UC Berkeley!
Yes, that 'partial funding' comes from money that the University receives for post-season participation (i.e. Bowl games) from each specific bowl game committee. I'm sure you got in to Berkeley (wink, wink).
You know, CalBears, it's like you're on crack. Have you done crack before? I haven't, but people wo do think they're talking all this smart, witty-ass shit, when really it's just a bunch of gibberish/oral diarrhea.
And enough of this "holier than thou" bullshit. I got into Cal and chose not to go there. And I'm not the only one. I know plenty of people that didn't want to get run through the Undergrad Mill that you call a University. Okay, I get it, Cal... amazing school, where dreams are made and repartee consists of capitalizing letters to make dirty monosyllabic words stand out. Just chill.
Oh and you forgot the next sentence of the quote you got from their website..."Only partially funded by the University, the Band is a non-profit organization..."
FUNDING IS FUNDING, dude, no matter how you allocate it. We know, we don't get much, but we don't deny that we get any at all either...
"The Band is a non-profit organization, and any funds generated by performances are used for administrative costs, such as uniform cleaning and food, in order for the Band to run smoothly."
Also, you are forgetting the cost of supplies that most marching bands need, i.e. instruments (repair, maintainenence, and replacment) uniforms (maintanence, replacement), etc.
How are you going to tell me that they get the money from the school? My friends are in the Band and they tell me themselves. Read this:
"The Cal Band is one of the few college marching bands that must fundraise on its own for its survival."
To my knowledge, the only money that the University gives to the band is the one that goes to pay the director. The rest of the money for trips, events, activities, etc. comes from other sources.
dude, listen. They get money from the school. How is it that they got a budget cut earlier this year if the school doesn't give them funding? The UCB cut 40k from their budget of X dollars.
It is cool that you guys drive everywhere, but let me repeat, since you guys did not read it the first 100000 times I posted it. THE CAL BAND RECEIVES NO MONEY FROM THE SCHOOL, ATHLETICS OR ASUC. NONE. All of the money they have comes from fundraisers the band puts on, alumni donations and other sources that are not UC Berkeley. None of it comes from the school. The Aggie band does receive money from UC Davis. Got it?
Who cares who has more money or less money? That does not equate to spirit. How am I evading the discussion? It is you who cannot read and follow along because I was responding to someone's comment.
caitdizzle23, you seriously need to learn how to read. We already established that the SHB did go to Arizona. I don't know where that rumor that they didn't come from. Who cares that you drove a few hours to a roadtrip? You guys don't have to deal with stuff like Big Game Week when the band puts on a boatload of activities for various events (Such as the Bonfire rally, night rally, Battle of the Bands, etc...) all in one week.
Oh and I like how you keep falling back on the "Cal is smarter than you, I need to compensate for my small dick" form of argumentation, CalBears, completely evading the discussion. If you are so smart take a reasoning class buddy. You are the coolest.
They did that all to support their team. The straw hat band decides not to go to Arizona because they can't fly? They end up crying to the administration to get 15k to do a trip that could be done for 15 hundred with more enthusiasm and excitment? And you say you take pride in your University or show spirit for your athletics?
I seem to recall a time where the Aggie band was slated to fly to North Dakota (on one of two flying trips that season) and their football teams flight got cancelled. The aggie band gave up their seats, and then DROVE on three hours notice to Fargo.
They HAD planned not to go as of Septermber, but $ came through from the administration ($12,000) and from ASUC ($3,000) so that 25 bandsmen could go.
But really, do you need 15k to go to Arizona? The Aggie Band could have made it on 1/10th of that, with more people. How? Don't fly, don't stay in a hotel, and have more fun doing it.
I know what the ASUC (ASUCD, ASUCLA, etc.) are and I do go to UC Berkeley. Every school's ASUC works differently and you should know that. Don't ASSume that the ASUCD and the ASUC work the same. What if students at UCD voted to give funding to the band and not at Cal? (Not saying that this happened, but hypotehtical). If the SHB couldn't afford to fly, then why did I see them on TV?
By your logic, you're a loser too because "you've posted something like 10 times already." GET OFF MY JOCK!! Even better idea, go have fun tipping cows over.
[Sarcasm] Nah, you can't be serious about that being an urban myth? [/Sarcasm] You're even stupider than what I thought. If I'm not-so intelligent and I got into Berkeley, what does that make you?
They get money from the University as well as from Student Reg. fees, they are run by students, and they allocate funds to various organizations and events on campus. The Cal band and Aggie Band are not funded by these groups, they are funded by the University itself (and fundraising, as you mentioned).
Do you even go to a UC? It seems like you should know the difference between the Administration and ASUC if you did...
Also, I stated before that the Cal Band DOES NOT travel to PAC-10 away games. We send the "Straw Hat Band" to those away games. And, yes, the SHB was at the Cal at Arizona game this year. We have about the same number of band members at away games as you send to away games, too, except the Cal Band finds ways to raise more money (via fundraisers, alumni donations, out of pocket, etc...) to fund their trips, so they have the luxury of flying.
Dude, ok, so the Straw Hat band (which is still the Cal Band) didn't go this year, according to what i read on their schedule. They couldn't afford to fly, so they skipped. And ASUC = Associated Studesnts of the University of California, while ASUCD = Associated Students of the University of California, Davis. ASUC and ASUCD are NOT the same as the University. ASUC and ASUCD are the student government organizations at their prospective campuses.
You are right, the Cal Band doesn't get funding from the ASUC, just as the Aggie Band doesn't get funding from the ASUCD. They get funding from te university, and in the Cal Band's case, some money from the Athletics or PAC-10 (I think). They're budget? At least quadruple that of the Aggie Band. The 50-100 bandsmen that went on every trip paid between $30-$200 out of their OWN POCKET to offset the cost for the band to go.
Key words that you wrote: "I think." Please STFU. The ASUC funds all of our student groups and decides what to allocate to what groups. The Cal Band DOES NOT receive any money from the ASUC (AKA "the University" if you're in Davis), so don't assume that the Cal Band has about quadruple the budget of the Aggie Band. I'm sure that I already stated all my points on how the Cal Band receives it's money and if you can't read or choose to ignore those points, that is completely your bad.
How can we afford this? We drove to every game except one in Ohio. That's right: drove to Colorado, drove to Texas, Montana, SoCal, and bussed to South Dakota. And when I say drove, I mean drove: the bandsmen drove university vans in 6 hours shifts, all through the night to get to the game on time.
ok, here's another fact smart guy: the Cal Band didn't go to the Cal-Arizona game this year in Arizona because they couldn't afford to fly the band there. That's right: FLY. As anyone familiar with the Aggie Band would know, we travelled over 16,000 miles this year to 6 different schools.
The Cal Band does attend ALL away games as well. Not a full band, but the "Straw Hat Band." I believe that about 60-70 members travel to each away game. So what that your school isn't D-1, UCD still gives your band money. Our ASUC gives nothing to the Cal Band.
Cal Band Great! But, yea, don't complain about a lack of budgets to the Aggie Band Uh! Yea, UCD is not even Division I yet, and yes, our games aren't as heavily attended as Cal games...but that's even more reason to really admire the Band Uh! The Cal band would never drive across the nation to see their school take on the likes of a Northern Colorado. Band Uh! hasn't missed a football game since the mid 1930s...Home or Away.
I've even seen them at a few baseball games. I guess that the Aggie Bland is pride-filled because they seem to be the only people in the stands at the UCD football games.
Don't even bother mentioning about you participating in a parade because the Cal Band gets asked to perform at more events than your band. They are usually asked to play in about 20 or more events during Big Game Week...
Jslares, the reason that the Cal Band might not have attended those functions was because they are a student-run band. They receive NO MONEY from the ASUC, so all of the events they attends are paid for by the students in the band. The Cal Straw Hat Band does attend away games, and the full band is there at EVERY HOME football, basketball and volleyball games.
ha, yeah, there are a bunch Tony Fox arrangments in our folder that weren't on the last album.
Yeah, Brodys are fun. They put a version of Beer Truck Driver on their last album that has the Aggie Band mixed in. Here is the itunes music store link:
Look through your folder. Anything that says T. Fox on it came from USC. And I'm pretty sure that Spiderwebs and Kids came a long time after the late 70s.....
(Spiderwebs, Kids, Children of Sanchez--I think, China Grove, Far From Over, Frankenstein, Heartbreaker, In the Stone, Rock That, Talk to Me.... some others I'm sure I've forgotten, so 10+....)
/so glad neither Cal nor Stanford has enough soul to play You Better You Bet.
Sorry CalBears, we don't have a $300,000 budget to waste on our own full time arrangers and heavy flow tampons like the Cal Band does...
I guess the Aggie Band is just too busy travelling, rooting on the team, and having a good time to be 'different' (can call Cal or Stanford different anymore?) ...speaking of a good time, where was the Cal band during the Redwood City 4th of July Parade this year? Or last year? The Aggie band was there. Stanford was there.
Stanford Band: Decides to say fuck you and give up the traditional marching band in the 60's. Fun, but half of it is just that their too busy studying to practice (or to organize a real party!)
Like I said a few posts ago, I have much more respect for Stanford than Cal, even though ssoski and the rest of the Stanford Band will never realize their 'shtick' has gotten old. Yes, the Aggie Band DID buy some songs from U$C arranger in the late 70's (not 7 or 8 though).
Cal Band: OWNED by the Ohio State band in the 50's. Copies their EXACT marching style to improve their look. Continues to march in the same style today.
UCD Aggie Band: In the early 60', yes, copies what Cal copied from Ohio St. in the 50's. The Aggie band takes on the Cal Band's style when a new director arrives at Davis from Cal.
ucdtim17, thanks for pointing out my typo (I noticed it after I posted). It's what people who don't have much to say will dwell on. Too bad you were not admitted to Cal. UC Davis needs to stop worrying about typos and ready themselves for originality. ssoski, yeah, they're the most unoriginal bunch of hacks and seem to pride themselves of stealing from other band, and they want to sit here and talk smack.
I agree with CalBears! What happened with your originality. There's a difference between you're so called originality and stupidity, well actually no there's not. You suck, your band sucks and football team will never be as great as the Mighty Golden Bears.
By the way genious, I was replying to the first comment. You claim that our band has no spirit, yet you try to copy them. Look at the uniforms, same crap. Look at the marching style, same high step marching style. Look at the fight songs, some are the same (Big C and Sons of California - which are originally ours). Nice try, though.
Yeah, ok... Berkeley rejects. Too bad no one goes to any of your football or basketball games. Too bad we don't play you in football or basketball or the game would be over ten seconds in. If it makes you feel better, yeah the 'Furd band has more spirit, but we can actually compose our OWN fight songs and get our OWN colors.
By the way, the Stanfurd band is a 'Scatter band' so there's no reason for them to march. PLUS, our band has more spirit than EVERYONE in your school put together.
Wow, you guys beat StanFUrd ONCE in basketball and ONCE in football and now you think you're rivals? LMAO at you tools. UC Davis (AKA Cal Extension, North) should stick to Sac State and the rest of the no-name schools, and let us deal with big time schools with big time athletic programs - that is, fUCLA, U$C and StanFUrd. Go Bears!
If you had any idea what you were talking about, you would realize that my reference to the Stanford Band in the video description is aimed squarely at LSJUMB's lack marching ability, not at a perceived rivalry that does not exist.
But really, I shouldn't give the Stanford Band too hard of a time, as they do have more spirit and fight in them than the Dirty Golden Bear Band ever will.
lolz, its gunna be hilarious if they break their instruments

Cal is better than UC Davis and I'm sure that more than 90% of your student body applied to Cal and did not get in. That's why having colors like ours and our fight song is appropriate. You want to be like Berkeley.
Only the best of the UC system can go to Berkeley and UCLA. For everyone else, there's Davis.
CalBears 4 years ago
I'm fairly sure CalBears's mommy didn't love him enough.
jslares 4 years ago
It's ok, I still got into Cal.
CalBears 4 years ago
Actually, all the UC's have the same colors. Also...UCLA has a lower acceptance rate than UC Berkeley.
-One jealous aggie (wink wink)
aspire82 4 years ago
yeah...you keep saying that. Im sure all the stanford kids say that about cal, and all the princeton kids say that about stanford. who really gives a shit? if it gives you an ego boost, then fine WE WORSHIP YOU BECAUSE CAL IS RANKED BATTER. HAIL CAL PPL.
WeirdWhodi 4 years ago
That's easy. YALE would only fund the new UC campuses if they adopted the blue and gold, made so familar by UC Berkeley. UCLA was only allowed to change to "true" or "powder" blue because they were going to be a division I football team.
futureaggiebandman 3 years ago

Berkeley rejects.
CalBears 5 years ago
What's with the hating? Us aggies don't hate anyone? Oh, I know why! It's because you people at Cal couldn't get into an Ivy League caliber school. Unlike you, at least we're content.
Stanford Rejects.
aspire82 4 years ago
It's funny that you call us Stanfurd rejects, when you could not even get into Cal. Sorry, but it does not work that way. You have to have been able to match Berkeley's prestige or higher in order to knock us for not going to an Ivy League or Stanfurd.
Using your logic, you guys are:
Ivy League rejects.
Stanfurd rejects.
Berkeley rejects.
UCLA rejects.
UCSD rejects.
...and the list goes on. Try getting into a school of our caliber and then come talk.
CalBears 4 years ago
I did get into Cal (but not UCLA)and know a lot of people there. I simply chose open country over the congested (ghetto) east bay. By virtue of the fact that your name is CalBears, you're someone who's who proud to be at Cal, but you've let this go too far and let your head get too big; get over yourself.
By the way, it's Stanford not Stanfurd. Way to try by sounding out your words :-)
aspire82 4 years ago
Yeah, trying to correct me on my spelling of StanFUrd. Like I said before, let the big boys play with the big boys and we'll let you children play together. It's a rivalry thing that we have here and we spell Stanfurd that way in the East Bay.
I really do believe that you were admitted to Berkeley (wink, wink) and chose UCD. I really do believe you.
HAHAHAHAHA.
CalBears 4 years ago
I've been reading what you've been replying to others and seeing that you're damn full of yourself. I'm a Cal alum and my sister (who's now a Dr.) is a UCD Alum. You're an embarrassment to California. Dumbshit, get over yourself.
PS My sister also chose UCD over Cal and was a proud member of the Cal Aggie Band Uh
lent2007 4 years ago 2
I'm sure you are a Cal alum and that the story about your sister is true (wink, wink), but why is it that your username was created today (March 20) was only used to post that comment 6 hours ago?
Obviously you're a jealous UCD Aggie that could not become a Cal Bear. By the way, any Cal alum would not refer to the UCD band as the "Cal Aggie" band, even though they use that name. Just some tips for you stupid UCD Aggies.
Better luck next time... not!

CalBears 5 years ago
hi calbears, i'll spell out my last comment for you because you were obviously too inept to understand. i saw the cal band perform while i was inebriated and didn't find any attractive people in the entire group. band-uh on the other hand is filled with good looking people sober or not. but i'm sure you've already realized all of this since you go to cal and you're so much smarter than everyone else. leave the band-uh alone and let them do what they do best: kick ass and party hard.

"Why do I go the University of California, Davis? Because Berkeley is infested with homeless people."
True, it is infested with homeless people, but I came here for the education, not because of who or what is on Telegraph.
Still, I'd rather it be infested with homeless people than with the smell of cow dung near Tercero or just year round boredom.
CalBears 5 years ago
Hahahahaha, that was fantastic.
And I'm not going to lie to you, if I had the chance, I'd do lares' mom too, she's a total Milf, his sister's hot too.

Yes, that 'partial funding' comes from money that the University receives for post-season participation (i.e. Bowl games) from each specific bowl game committee. I'm sure you got in to Berkeley (wink, wink).

Just chill.
lares, you are my hero.
gmaull 5 years ago
Oh and you forgot the next sentence of the quote you got from their website..."Only partially funded by the University, the Band is a non-profit organization..."
FUNDING IS FUNDING, dude, no matter how you allocate it. We know, we don't get much, but we don't deny that we get any at all either...
gmaull 5 years ago
Wait, so you're not even in the band, CalBears. You're pretty zealous for someone who isn't affliated...
gmaull 5 years ago
You mean this:
"The Band is a non-profit organization, and any funds generated by performances are used for administrative costs, such as uniform cleaning and food, in order for the Band to run smoothly."
CalBears 5 years ago
You are confused.
Also, you are forgetting the cost of supplies that most marching bands need, i.e. instruments (repair, maintainenence, and replacment) uniforms (maintanence, replacement), etc.
jslares 5 years ago
How are you going to tell me that they get the money from the school? My friends are in the Band and they tell me themselves. Read this:
"The Cal Band is one of the few college marching bands that must fundraise on its own for its survival."
To my knowledge, the only money that the University gives to the band is the one that goes to pay the director. The rest of the money for trips, events, activities, etc. comes from other sources.
CalBears 5 years ago
dude, listen. They get money from the school. How is it that they got a budget cut earlier this year if the school doesn't give them funding? The UCB cut 40k from their budget of X dollars.
jslares 5 years ago
It is cool that you guys drive everywhere, but let me repeat, since you guys did not read it the first 100000 times I posted it. THE CAL BAND RECEIVES NO MONEY FROM THE SCHOOL, ATHLETICS OR ASUC. NONE. All of the money they have comes from fundraisers the band puts on, alumni donations and other sources that are not UC Berkeley. None of it comes from the school. The Aggie band does receive money from UC Davis. Got it?
CalBears 5 years ago
Who cares who has more money or less money? That does not equate to spirit. How am I evading the discussion? It is you who cannot read and follow along because I was responding to someone's comment.
CalBears 5 years ago
caitdizzle23, you seriously need to learn how to read.
CalBears 5 years ago
Oh and I like how you keep falling back on the "Cal is smarter than you, I need to compensate for my small dick" form of argumentation, CalBears, completely evading the discussion. If you are so smart take a reasoning class buddy. You are the coolest.
caitdizzle23 5 years ago
They did that all to support their team. The straw hat band decides not to go to Arizona because they can't fly? They end up crying to the administration to get 15k to do a trip that could be done for 15 hundred with more enthusiasm and excitment? And you say you take pride in your University or show spirit for your athletics?
caitdizzle23 5 years ago
I seem to recall a time where the Aggie band was slated to fly to North Dakota (on one of two flying trips that season) and their football teams flight got cancelled. The aggie band gave up their seats, and then DROVE on three hours notice to Fargo.
caitdizzle23 5 years ago
They HAD planned not to go as of Septermber, but $ came through from the administration ($12,000) and from ASUC ($3,000) so that 25 bandsmen could go.
But really, do you need 15k to go to Arizona? The Aggie Band could have made it on 1/10th of that, with more people. How? Don't fly, don't stay in a hotel, and have more fun doing it.
Happy Thanksgiving CalBears.
jslares 5 years ago
I know what the ASUC (ASUCD, ASUCLA, etc.) are and I do go to UC Berkeley. Every school's ASUC works differently and you should know that. Don't ASSume that the ASUCD and the ASUC work the same. What if students at UCD voted to give funding to the band and not at Cal? (Not saying that this happened, but hypotehtical). If the SHB couldn't afford to fly, then why did I see them on TV?

[Sarcasm] Nah, you can't be serious about that being an urban myth? [/Sarcasm] You're even stupider than what I thought. If I'm not-so intelligent and I got into Berkeley, what does that make you?
CalBears 5 years ago
This is from THEIR WEBSITE:
News and Events * Nov. 4: Vs. UCLA * Nov. 11: @ Arizona * Nov. 18: @ USC
CalBears 5 years ago
They get money from the University as well as from Student Reg. fees, they are run by students, and they allocate funds to various organizations and events on campus. The Cal band and Aggie Band are not funded by these groups, they are funded by the University itself (and fundraising, as you mentioned).
Do you even go to a UC? It seems like you should know the difference between the Administration and ASUC if you did...
jslares 5 years ago
Also, I stated before that the Cal Band DOES NOT travel to PAC-10 away games. We send the "Straw Hat Band" to those away games. And, yes, the SHB was at the Cal at Arizona game this year. We have about the same number of band members at away games as you send to away games, too, except the Cal Band finds ways to raise more money (via fundraisers, alumni donations, out of pocket, etc...) to fund their trips, so they have the luxury of flying.
CalBears 5 years ago
Dude, ok, so the Straw Hat band (which is still the Cal Band) didn't go this year, according to what i read on their schedule. They couldn't afford to fly, so they skipped. And ASUC = Associated Studesnts of the University of California, while ASUCD = Associated Students of the University of California, Davis. ASUC and ASUCD are NOT the same as the University. ASUC and ASUCD are the student government organizations at their prospective campuses.
jslares 5 years ago
You are right, the Cal Band doesn't get funding from the ASUC, just as the Aggie Band doesn't get funding from the ASUCD. They get funding from te university, and in the Cal Band's case, some money from the Athletics or PAC-10 (I think). They're budget? At least quadruple that of the Aggie Band. The 50-100 bandsmen that went on every trip paid between $30-$200 out of their OWN POCKET to offset the cost for the band to go.
jslares 5 years ago
Key words that you wrote: "I think." Please STFU. The ASUC funds all of our student groups and decides what to allocate to what groups. The Cal Band DOES NOT receive any money from the ASUC (AKA "the University" if you're in Davis), so don't assume that the Cal Band has about quadruple the budget of the Aggie Band. I'm sure that I already stated all my points on how the Cal Band receives it's money and if you can't read or choose to ignore those points, that is completely your bad.
CalBears 5 years ago
How can we afford this? We drove to every game except one in Ohio. That's right: drove to Colorado, drove to Texas, Montana, SoCal, and bussed to South Dakota. And when I say drove, I mean drove: the bandsmen drove university vans in 6 hours shifts, all through the night to get to the game on time.
jslares 5 years ago
I have my facts together. You're the misinformed one. I'm sure that's all you can come up with. UC Davis wishes they were Cal.
CalBears 5 years ago
ok, here's another fact smart guy: the Cal Band didn't go to the Cal-Arizona game this year in Arizona because they couldn't afford to fly the band there. That's right: FLY. As anyone familiar with the Aggie Band would know, we travelled over 16,000 miles this year to 6 different schools.
jslares 5 years ago
The Straw Hat Band was there, are you sure you were watching the right game?
beanpole05 5 years ago
The Cal Band does attend ALL away games as well. Not a full band, but the "Straw Hat Band." I believe that about 60-70 members travel to each away game. So what that your school isn't D-1, UCD still gives your band money. Our ASUC gives nothing to the Cal Band.
CalBears 5 years ago
Dude, get your facts right if you want to argue.
jslares 5 years ago
Cal Band Great! But, yea, don't complain about a lack of budgets to the Aggie Band Uh! Yea, UCD is not even Division I yet, and yes, our games aren't as heavily attended as Cal games...but that's even more reason to really admire the Band Uh! The Cal band would never drive across the nation to see their school take on the likes of a Northern Colorado. Band Uh! hasn't missed a football game since the mid 1930s...Home or Away.
norcalhella 5 years ago
Why are you guys arguing about the bands? It's not like it matters. Cal>UC whatever.
marksaldana 5 years ago
I've even seen them at a few baseball games. I guess that the Aggie Bland is pride-filled because they seem to be the only people in the stands at the UCD football games.
Don't even bother mentioning about you participating in a parade because the Cal Band gets asked to perform at more events than your band. They are usually asked to play in about 20 or more events during Big Game Week...
CalBears 5 years ago
Jslares, the reason that the Cal Band might not have attended those functions was because they are a student-run band. They receive NO MONEY from the ASUC, so all of the events they attends are paid for by the students in the band. The Cal Straw Hat Band does attend away games, and the full band is there at EVERY HOME football, basketball and volleyball games.

ha, yeah, there are a bunch Tony Fox arrangments in our folder that weren't on the last album.

BTW, why does the LSJUMB love Story in Your Eyes so much?
jslares 5 years ago
Look through your folder. Anything that says T. Fox on it came from USC. And I'm pretty sure that Spiderwebs and Kids came a long time after the late 70s.....
(Spiderwebs, Kids, Children of Sanchez--I think, China Grove, Far From Over, Frankenstein, Heartbreaker, In the Stone, Rock That, Talk to Me.... some others I'm sure I've forgotten, so 10+....)
/so glad neither Cal nor Stanford has enough soul to play You Better You Bet.
//chart more Brodys! :)

No Cal though. I hear they didn't come the last two years because they didn't have a bus.
Are you kidding me? A BUS? Jesus Christ Cal Band. Stop begin bitches and drive your own ass to the Peninsula...
This is why you should be a little upset at your Bear band CalBears. They have no soul anymore!
jslares 5 years ago
Sorry CalBears, we don't have a $300,000 budget to waste on our own full time arrangers and heavy flow tampons like the Cal Band does...
I guess the Aggie Band is just too busy travelling, rooting on the team, and having a good time to be 'different' (can call Cal or Stanford different anymore?) ...speaking of a good time, where was the Cal band during the Redwood City 4th of July Parade this year? Or last year? The Aggie band was there. Stanford was there.
jslares 5 years ago
Stanford Band: Decides to say fuck you and give up the traditional marching band in the 60's. Fun, but half of it is just that their too busy studying to practice (or to organize a real party!)
Like I said a few posts ago, I have much more respect for Stanford than Cal, even though ssoski and the rest of the Stanford Band will never realize their 'shtick' has gotten old. Yes, the Aggie Band DID buy some songs from U$C arranger in the late 70's (not 7 or 8 though).
jslares 5 years ago
haha... let me help you CalBears and ssoski...
Cal Band: OWNED by the Ohio State band in the 50's. Copies their EXACT marching style to improve their look. Continues to march in the same style today.
UCD Aggie Band: In the early 60', yes, copies what Cal copied from Ohio St. in the 50's. The Aggie band takes on the Cal Band's style when a new director arrives at Davis from Cal.
jslares 5 years ago
ucdtim17, thanks for pointing out my typo (I noticed it after I posted).
CalBears 5 years ago
Hey CalBears! Did you notice that you're not the only one the Band-Uh! likes to steal from? Not only Cal and Stanford, but you can find at least 7 or 8 tracks on their last two CDs that all say © 19xx USC Band at the bottom of the score. Talk about desperation!

I agree with CalBears! What happened with your originality. There's a difference between you're so called originality and stupidity, well actually no there's not. You suck, your band sucks and football team will never be as great as the Mighty Golden Bears.
beanpole05 5 years ago
By the way genious, I was replying to the first comment. You claim that our band has no spirit, yet you try to copy them. Look at the uniforms, same crap. Look at the marching style, same high step marching style. Look at the fight songs, some are the same (Big C and Sons of California - which are originally ours). Nice try, though.
CalBears 5 years ago
CalBears 5 years ago
hahaha
jslares 5 years ago
Wow, you guys beat StanFUrd ONCE in basketball and ONCE in football and now you think you're rivals? LMAO at you tools. Go Bears!
CalBears 5 years ago
If you had any idea what you were talking about, you would realize that my reference to the Stanford Band in the video description is aimed squarely at LSJUMB's lack marching ability, not at a perceived rivalry that does not exist.
But really, I shouldn't give the Stanford Band too hard of a time, as they do have more spirit and fight in them than the Dirty Golden Bear Band ever will.
