  • The beautiful melody here that is so Dylan-like goes perfectly with pete's unhappy Lyrics so well it is frightening !! Everything about the Who by Numbers is awesome and dynamic particularly keith and Pete's playing,....This is a Great Who album with all great songwriter material ! This here record is a pretty good indicator why today's music sucks so much and why Green Day and Foo Fighters are such a joke.

  • I have loved the who for years. Stumbled on to beautitful song last night. The melody alone brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for posting.

  • Great album but a bit of a bum trip. Very stark. But at least they were trying new things and not repeating themselves. They always looked for new ground. But this album is depressing.

  • @bornwithoutwarning That's what John had to say about it. I think it was and old Sounds magazine that I found with an interview with him. He said By Numbers was " a bit of a downer. " Me? I listen to it before I listen to Who's Next. I'm also a HUGE fan of the Woodstock performance.

  • my favorite Who album. not sure why, it just is.

  • Fuck squeeze Box IMO ! It's the least of my favorites on this incredibly under rated album ! So many many other great songs as this one ! Fuck Off to corporate Radio ! There I said it !!! This album was so worthy of so much better airplay but we had to listen to the Carpenters and Maureen mcgovern's "The morning After" I mean ,come on, what are you shitting me ?

  • They only play "squeeze box" these days...

  • An incredibly lyrically written song of an incredible album. It may be under rated but not by my standards because it's in my collection and that's what matters to me ! Thank goodness for Pete's writing abilities ! I love the Who !!

  • I absolutely love this album !! So So under rated !!

  • 0:54 in pfffftt magazines!

  • @Schmunken1 Love pffffft magazine ! Great ear catch !

  • R.I.P. Keith , John , and Nicky ! Great Tune from such an under rated album !

  • This a great album to unwind with after a long day.

  • @baleariclife89 "Won't Get Fooled" was released in '71, well before the Sex Pistols.

  • tough call because i love all the who songs but i'd say this is in the top 2 albums by the who long live rock!!!!!

  • naw this album is one of the weaker ones indeed. Still better than most. It reminds me of empty glass. The COOL thing about pete is each album is completely different. who are you has heavy synth, as doe WN, and tommys mainly guitar.......slip kid is kewl

  • @lovedandhis At least you're right on that every album is very different form each other, very original too.

  • I'm sure it's quite different from Pete's intent, but this song used to remind me of walking through the halls of my high school at the time. Oh well, maybe some feelings are universal.

  • Nick Hopkins really shines in this track.

  • @veplaini I was the piano player in rock bands. to be told I sounded like Nicky Hopkins was the ultimate compliment. He was amazing

  • my fav on this one ..and there all in love..

  • Most folks will conclude I'm fucked in the head (and that's fine, of course), but I say this is from The Who's greatest album -- which is one of the greatest albums of all time.

  • @joeypolanski Love this album too - it's their most beautiful songs - Nicky Hopkins is fantastic.

  • Bee- you- tuh- full aint it?

  • beautiful ain't it?

  • I haven't heard this in years!

  • Ted

    Anna

  • ...la mia canzone preferita dei The Who!

  • replay yeh go on then ha ha!!!the best.

  • Beautiful piano from Nicky Hopkins

  • não tem pra ninguém!!!!

  • Wasn´t it "Good bye all you PUNKS, stay young and stay high"?

  • Pete said that this was the most negative album they ever did.

The band was fighting about everything.............but it has the most feeling of all the albums

  • I \was thinking of this tune today for the first time in years and kicked myself for not seeking it out on here sooner. One of their best ever -- and one that surprisingly has gotten kind of lost in the shuffle over time. Still gives me kind of a magical feeling to hear it again. DAMNED great song -- thanks for posting it here.

  • "Goodbye all you drunks, stay young & stay high..."Great song!

  • this song defines the early to mid late 70"s.....page could never write this.....gilmour could never write this...jagger and richards could never write this song...

  • @ScottLansky No one could!!!! You can't beat Pete!! Pete can't be beat!!!!

  • great song great album great band brings back young memories : ]

  • Always loved this song. One of the best kept secrets. Beautiful piano, great lyrics, sung with Daltreys usual passion, nice melodies. What more do you need from a song? I bought this album in 1975 & listened to it endlessly whilst sitting in a little bedsit in Northampton after leaving the army. It brings back poignant memories. Long live Pete & Roger. A good song is eternal, like the tides & the mountains. Sorry that's another Who classic.

  • @MrCorbett26 - Totally agree. I personally think this is Moon's most sensitive drumming performance, ever. Also, most people don't realize that it's also Townshend's flipping the bird at the growing punk movement in England at the time.

  • @gasaholic47

That's not true considering the time frame this album came out in..as well, Pete was an enthusiastic admirer of the punk movement as he stated ( in many interviews at the time) that the Punk movement was evocative of the ethos of the early days of the Who.

  • "Where do you fit in THHBBBBPPPPPT magazine?" I'm a ad looking for a new magazine! hahaHA!

  • for eal Who fans

  • they should have released this as a single. i know its a lot lighter than their typical stuff, but i can see a lot of people appreciating this song.

  • very appropriate for valentines day.. don't be a sucker .. there would be no sex at all if it wasn't for the penis. women are curios cows to a point - but they just want to enslave you for security.. same as the one world government.

  • love the piano- the digital remaster sounds incredible

  • pfffft magazine

  • harmony's as good as the eagles on this track

  • Great album. Love the gentleness of it. And knowing they turn it up as well. Sets them apart from most other bands.

  • i so need to buy more songs from this album

  • how DARE you forget how great this album was??!haha ! cause they never play it in the radio, I guess ...snif. this is almost the best song from it .... wonderful. no one can write songs like that today ... it´s not nostalghia, it´s a FACT.

  • Sad but true. The era of lyricists such as Dylan and Townsend are no more.

  • @buchananstreet All you ever hear from this on the radio are "Squeeze Box" and, if you're lucky, "Slip Kid." That's just plain wrong!

  • Comment removed

  • @AdamsApple1963 I totally agree with all of you , such an underrated album ! Townshend was so addicted to booze , drugs, fed up at this point with touring , the band and Keith's unpredictability. He pours his heart and frustration into the making of this album. It deserved so much more radio play , what a sin and what were they ( Radio Stations ) thinking ?

  • The best!

  • its the most underrated album

  • @PETEtownsend19 TOTALLY AGREE

  • Forgot how great this album was!!!

    Great add
