It's humor based in comedic situations (hence the name "sit com") that occur in the characters lives and it's performed in front of a live audience to get an as natural and authentic reaction as possible. Every sit com that I know how has this format.

@jolanza2006 The reason Why "How I met you mother" is shown pre-recorded to a live audience is because the director of the show worked in a too advanced way for the audience to be able to fully enjoy the show and the laughter would had to be added digitally afterwards. However, he still wanted to stay true to the sitcom tradition and thus shows the finished episode to a test audience. So it's not purely by choice that they don't film it live, it's because of technical difficulties on the set.
