  • There were different views on what was a good singer back then

  • The christina version is way better... no disrespect for those who like this one

  • @Jessica411411 true

  • after watching this and christinas version... this isnt even in the same league i dont know why people think its that good...

  • A Guy Who Takes His Time is what the song is called. Why is everyone posting A Guy What? Doesn't even make sense. I have the soundtrack. It's A Guy Who

  • @karensgifts She clearly says "what" not who. It's just the way Mae West spoke naturally.

  • @DracoFamiliar

man she was from brooklyn thats the way the spoke back then!

  • This needs to be at 1,000,000 views AT LEAST

  • Christina's version is WAY better. No disrespect..

  • mae west is incomparable,"if you know what I mean"!

she is sexy and classy at the same time and an original all natural beauty.

  • Who THE fuck is this bitch her voice sound's like she is singing with a dick in her mouth. Fuck christina is the best.

  • @soloclassic4u

go jump off a peer bitch you sound like trash. that said if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all. i swear to god these kids today have no damn class at all.

  • TheSolitaryHeart Your right. Mae West is legend. Christina Aguliara is good, But Mae West is better and she is the original singer. :) :) :) Not trying to be rude to anybody.

  • ugh her voice iz to nasel 4 my taste not as good s christina

  • the christina aguilera's version is better sorry

  • that's not the full song. it's at least twice as long, with varied lyrics.

  • Thumbs up if Burlesque brought you here! :D

  • @springchic94

If you mean the movie than... yeah

  • Mae West is the original. The rest are wannabes.

  • mea was an "octoroon"

    1/8 black.

  • @oldstock1607 shut up

  • @il0vethis go fuck yourself. It's true.

  • @oldstock1607 if women could fuck themselves, men would be totally useless to us. Idc that she was black I care that you had to tell everyone. We're enjoying the music not worrying about what race she was :)

  • @il0vethis well, if women didn't have vaginas, there'd be a bounty on their heads. And I wasn't pointing it out to be a "racist," dimwit. Unfortunately for you, you're not the final arbiter of everything said about Mae West. Come to grips with it.

  • @oldstock1607 lol you're a racist and a sexist....smh this conversation is over.

  • @il0vethis well, if you weren't a shrill, pissed-off-at-the-world dyke, this conversation would have never began.

  • @oldstock1607 I didn't know I was a dyke, thank you for the news flash. I'm not pissed at the world, I'm having a wonderful life. I start my second year of college, I'm in a relationship with a great guy and I have a great paying job. If you would have commented on her voice or the video and not her race we wouldn't be having this convo.

  • @il0vethis Well congrats. I'm a Mae West fan. I went to college too, and you know what? I didn't let it brainwash me into being so hypersensitive on the issue of race that I flip out when someone mentions that an individual is one eighth black. Is it now against leftist policy to even mention race anymore? Sorry, i didn't get the memo.

  • Muy padre, pero me encanta la nueva versión de Chistina Aguilera

  • I WONDER WHAT HOLLYWOOD DID WITH THOSE DRESSES PRETTY ,PRETTY I LOVE MAE WEST I TRY TO WEAR BIG HAIR ,MAKE UP SEXY WALK TAKE MY TIME TO TALK BE SEXY EVERY DAY SHE WAS THE PRETTIEST BLONDE THEN SHE GAVE EVERY BODY A CHANCE A LEADER

  • Christina all the way!!!!!! Sorry mae=(

  • I HOPE VICTORIAN CLOTHING COMES BACK IN MY LIFETIME.

  • O_______________O

I have respect for the original, but....sometimes remakes/covers are better.

    Like WAY better.

    Sorry Xtina takes the cake.

  • Just to compare... Ms Aguillara is half naked when she sings this. Mae West is covered head to toe, no flashy moves...and she still oozes sex appeal. Sorry, Mae West wins.

  • @blkchk Agree!! 100 percent!!

  • The WAY she says "I ain't nervious" is simply hilarious.

  • Christina did a great remake but Mae is the original. And it's not just about the range of a woman's voice...Mae was sexy in a much subtler way than Christina, more classy, less in your face.

  • I like her version. But I like the remake more. First time I heard this original.

  • Christina was way better, sorry Mae.

  • christina was better. no doubt. sorry oldies fan.

  • @ChristinaJedra Christina is not a legend. Mae West is, she pushed boundaries Christina didn't,

  • @TheSolitaryHeart CHRISTINA AGUILERA LEGEND! OKAY?? you are Loser!

  • @TheSolitaryHeart Umm... not true, at all. They're both talented. Relax.

  • i'm sorry but CHRISTINA AGUILERA did this song way better every remake christina does she does amazing she's just so talented!

  • neyvous !

  • Fair enough, this lady is a legend. But you cannot dismiss Christina's version completely. If anyone were to cover this song, it makes sense that it was Christina as she has shown respect and homage to stars like Mae and this particular era many times throughout her career.

Not to mention Christina is one of the greatest vocalists of this generation. I'd like to have seen Katy Perry or Rihanna try to cover this, and then see what some of you would say . . .

  • I LIKE a guy who takes his time to!!!

  • @rbutler8273 Exactly right. There's just no comparison at all.

  • Christina Aguilera's Rendition on the film "Burlesque" is better than this talking about musical skills, i also find it more entertaining, nut with out West, christina wouldn't be arroung acting like a sexy bomb glamed up with diamonds, and of course, wouldn't show those red lips.

  • wow her accent is THICK. i didn't expect that.

  • <3 Christina Aguilera's cover of this is purely AMAZING!

  • @Twinman2 CA's cover is weak compared to the Queen

  • Silent film actress Mary Pickford took exception to this Mae West song and told Lewis Jacobs in "The Rise of the American Film" that she was scandalized when she passed by the bedroom door of her seventeen-year-old neice and heard her singing bits of the song. A red-faced Pickford told Jacobs she couldn't even bring herself to repeat the song's title. "I say 'that song' because I blush to quote the title." Mae West died exactly 30 years ago, Nov. 22, 1980.

  • Somethin i needed 2 do and didnt have time 2 do it and spider did it 4 me... I love this movie.

  • ihope one day i get to hear christina aguiera version

  • @kriskeri oh me to i'd love to hear it!

  • @kriskeri i hope i can avoid hearing the cheap imitation ever again

    :)

  • Mae's right as usual; we all like "a guy what takes his time."

  • I don't know, Almadora. I think a guy what takes his time is a keeper indeed, especially if he clearly likes taking his time.

  • I love how she is almost covered from head to toe, but she's just oozing sensuality. Not like today!

  • What I think is so ironic about Mae West is that she was (relatively) selective in her love life whereas so many other hollywood "good" girls were raging nymphos..

  • The QUEEN of Diva's

  • One of a kind! ;-)

  • yes, but remember guys... there IS such a thing as taking TOO much time... just like a good action movie... set the plot quickly, give me a good car chase, let something blow up, and let those credits roll. i don't want my sex to be like a long, black and white foreign film about grain or something. sure, it might MEAN more, but its not as much fun.

  • ''are yuh noyvis?''

Just gotta love that old Brooklyn accent.

  • Could anyone send me the sheet music for this song? I've been asked to transcribe it for a friend.

  • Mae West was the bomb!

  • Unfortunately, two and half verses of the song WERE cut out - - you can see the drastic jump in the footage - before the Hays Office would permit general release. All Mae's excised material was destroyed in the mid 30s in an attempt to get her pictures re-released, so now we are the poorer for it.

BTW - the gowns are an uncredited Edith Head - one of her first films and the start of a long association with Mae

  • I don't know, I value the innuendo that slipped by. Supposedly she added things purposely that she knew would be censored so the innuendo would slip through. You see the same things from others of the time, Notably the Marx Bros.

I am against censorship but I think actors and comedians had to work harder then, and ponder this...People of all ages could watch it and no one had to worry about what was appropriate. Kids laughed, while the adults elbowed each other.

  • The full, or fuller version of the song is now available in the iTunes store. I just listened to it and while it doesn't sound like the music is taken from the film, it's pretty similar. So I thought I'd share the good news!

  • @BellovVideo It was a shame what they did to her films. Klondike Annie being a prime example.

  • It's too bad that even THIS early in the game, the censors were able to get a number of verses of this song (very obviously) deleted...

Still, it's Mae at the top of her game!

  • those are the original lyrics of the song, i have this sheet music so nothing was cut out from what i know. this is one of her best tunes and her costume is stunning in this one!

  • @pookypoo77 I saw this actual gown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC at a costume exhibit MANY years ago - I can't remember if the theme was designs of Edith Head or costumes from Hollywood films. The best part of it was to see how much stuffing - and in what places - they had to add to the mannequin in order for the gown to stay up!

    WHAT A WOMAN!!

  • @BellovVideo I saw that display at the MOMA ,saw that gown, and heard about the stuffing too !
