  • which version is better

  • Much better......Lester killed his vision!

  • So is this better then the lester version?

  • @vouboume Thier were a few things I liked about the Lester version. When Ursa arm wrestles the redneck was hilarious but that is about it. I must stress the word few. The Lester version was just too campy. But I am a big fan of the first film and the Donner Version of Superman 2 matches the first film so much better and is just a better and more dramatic overall. So I would choose the Donner version.

  • i just thought of something, why didn't superman just turn back the world after getting his powers back rather than fighting the villains in Metropolis. He could have avoided that whole mess.

  • @msmithstud Oh where would be the fun in that lol.

  • @crazyredlion4500 true. However, if the villains were imprisoned again after he turned the world back, it would have been pretty cool if they got out again in SUPERMAN 4 when he threw the missles into space. Personally, it would have been a better plot than ''nuclear man'' of all things.

  • @msmithstud I never saw number four it just looked too campy

  • @crazyredlion4500 Trust me. U didn't miss anything.

  • I love the closeup of the S when superman gets smashed by the bus he's trying to save..

  • I just watched the Superman 2 Richard Donner cut today on AMC, it was terrible. I like the regular Superman 2 better.

  • I just watched another "Donner cut" on AMC tonight. It has a different ending from the "Donner cut" that came out on DVD a couple years ago. The ending makes no sense, with Superman destroying the fortress, then taking the world back in time (the Fortress is back again, and how does the FIRST movie end?) and THEN...going back to the diner to take on the Bully, when the fight never happened! They should not mix up the two movies to where it makes no sense.

  • @rolex452 The Bully scene was a Donner scene. Donner was shown in the scene where Lois and Clark Pulled up. If they could've kept Donner as directorlike they originally were, they would have made a new ending since the original ending for II was used in Superman the Movie since they did not have one for it.

  • whats the difference between this one and the other one.

  • Kneel before Zod.

  • can't warner bros just re release this and Superman the movie to remind everyone how to actually do a superhero film?

  • i thought the flying around new york bit was better than the orig, i liked the different music as well

i think the orig has better continuity but the donner cut is more fun.

  • Did I see Reeves with a fetus in his hand?!?!

  • donner<S version is incrideble

  • Paul Newman was actually considered for v=the Superman role (that ultimately went to chris Reeve). BTW there is a great bio (Paul Newman: the Dream Has Ended!)for sale at amazon and its by Jenifer Demers!

  • I like this verison a lot I think Richard could have finished it back then it would be EVEN better

  • Thanks man, I appreciate it.

  • Well, The Richard Donner Cut is a little bit better than the original, but I like the original very much also.

  • Is the Donner cut better than the original.... i was considering buying it...

  • In my mind, I like to see comic moments and dialogue which can be found in the original Superman 2. However, that version threw in all kinds of moments that did not fit what was established in Superman 1. Donner, on the other hand, treated his version just as seriously as he did the first film. Although there are a few flaws, mostly because Donner was never able to finish filming according to his vision, his version is definitly a lot better.

  • cool vid man! where did you get the music in the backround?

  • i was badly confused, the superman flying back in time just made me think "why didn't he do that straight away" and then it ruined the entire film, the only superman action was at the end and that was annoying, there were some good scenes and improvment but dissapointingly spoiled

  • Will somebody tell me where can I buy the superman 2 the richard donner cut here in the philippines (Manila) plzzzzzzzzz, someone........ I will appreciate it very much.... superman will never die.......

  • I like the Donner version over the Lester one. Because the scenes with Jor-El were cool. It didn't make sense why in Lester's version half the Kryptons & Sup's Mom played his mentor instead of Jor-El. Jor-El always played Sup's mentor (and father as well)! The other Kryptons had no idea about their world ending.

  • Plus it was dum too when Superman loses his powers in Lester's version, he goes in wearing his Super Suit & he comes out wearing a Nice Suit. It made more sense that he just lost his powers in Donner's version.

  • I hope the scenes I recall vividly which disappointingly, are neither on VHS NOR DVDs I bought!: Non's killing a boy and Ursa's gloating over it; Otis & Lex's Pasta/bedwetter and Pshh conversations; Ms Teschmaker's & Lex's extended visit to the Fortress of Solitude; Lex's arrest at film's end following his lame attempt to convince Supes to become a boxer; the destruction of the Fortress! Must see!

  • I don't recall the thing about the boy, but all those other scenes are indeed Richard Donner footage, and available on the new disc.

  • General Zod instructs no one may leave without his permission. The boy whose father was levitated jumps on his horse and speeds away for help. Non throws the police strobe light at them which explodes on impact.

Woman - [Horrified] He was only a BOY!

Ursa - [Grinning] Who will never become a man!

  • Ah. That must have been Lester footage, because the levitation thing was his as well.

  • Ah...! Interesting. Thanks for that. Will have to give Lester credit for the character development of Ursa there at least. How I loved her in that thigh flashing costume of hers... lol

  • Donner's cut is awful way too much talking and it tries to be too funny in parts and sum wonky special effects. Lester's is to the point has sum great lines in it and more stylish. Lester's is far superior.

  • Agreed! Donner was good for the first but Lester was better. Glad we had it all these years.

  • I haven't seen the full Donner Cut, but when i was a kid ABC would show the film with the fortress being blown up at the end. But a couple years later, i saw the syndicated version with the lester ending and i thought i'd gone nuts (i was 9 at the time.) Actualy i was worried i'd fallen into an alternate dimension with a diffrent version of the film. It wasn't till the internet age that i figured out what'd happend. It was a trip.

  • Lester's version better although the only part of donner's that was better was the segment how he got his powers back.I also hated the donner ending...no final battle at the fortress of solitude and superman turning back time... again?

  • Actually,yoda124, Superman turning back time was an exclusive end for Superman II, but the studio pressed Donner to finish Superman I; he used the Superman's II finale for the first movie.

  • It's also more mind-bending at the end of Superman II. I loved the Richard Donner Cut!!!

  • Yeah, and they hadn't yet decided how they would end II after using it for I. They never got back to filming an ending before Donner was kicked off and Lester used the kiss to erase Lois' memory. Since this was not in Donner's vision and has long since been removed from the comic books, when the edited the Donner cut, they went back to the original ending, even if it no longer made that much sense.

  • Example: Clark has the fight with the guy at the diner, turns back time and goes back to settle things. The owner says he's only just had it fixed up and everything else suggests they all remembered the original fight.

While there are huge gaps in the Donner cut, had he completed it entirely before Lester and we had two complete Superman II's, most would see Donner's as by far the better. Less slapstick too.

  • never is an awfully long time - the lester version still has some cool moments that I think are worth watching.

  • Parts of it definitely flow better. I was more invested in the Clark/Lois relationship in Lester's version. Although I'm sure if Donner had gotten to film his missing scenes, he would have duplicated the same feeling, rather than haveing to rely on Lester's footage and screen tests.

  • Grrr, "having", even...

  • i definitely agree with that - it seemed in the donner version that ur pulled out of the moment when the movie switches to a lester scene - and it never felt that way the other way around in lester's movie when u go to a donner scene

  • I just bought this video, and saw it right after I saw Lester's version, and let me also say, I will never watch the Lester version again. Donner's version had more heart, and the scenes with Brando were absolutely stunning. I highly recommend this DVD, especially for any Superman fans out there. You will not be disappointed. ... Check out the ending of the film...

  • The Donner cut could be my favourite dvd possession! His version IS Superman II. I will never watch the Lester version again!

  • Alot of the footage was precomposited with alittle more modern CGI and crisp sound was added to just beautifully serve the film. Apparently much effort was placed in making sure of the sensibility that the effects had to be integral to the 1978 film, and not look like 2006. A couple of key scenes put in were actually script readings the actors did, and Richard Donner had no chance to shoot them.

This in my opinion should have been Superman II.
