Just out of curiosity, why do some people wear blue, purple, red etc. gis? Does it mean something?

Most of the time Gi color doesn't mean anything and its just fashion. =)

In Judo competition for example if you are fighting on a high level you have to wear a gi of the opposite(blue-white) color than the opponent, so that the spectators can discern the fight better.
