  • I want be a flight attendant in the golden age, not like to moody ones we have now adays

  • I didn't realize Convair had an entrant in the 4-engine jetliner competiton with

the DC-8 and 707...BTW, all the paeans to oldtime air travel leave out one big factor: cost. Very few could afford air travel in those days.

  • Just look at those trays of food and the way it's served...Ah, the days when people were polite and service was worth the money paid. I remember flying in a TWA super connie in 1961, I was just a kid, but sure noticed the niceties on board. I flew a CV 990 and Pan Am 707 in 1964, the CV 990 was better. And people...Dressed up for church, "Could you sir?" "Of course, please do" ...Today is no better than an LA traffic congestion in rush hour, only inches away from you.

  • What is the object flying by at 00:50?

  • @Teigokane Engine Flameout? maybe

  • im 15 but at the sametime this is amazing!! air travel use to be a luxury thing everybody would dress up and look goood now you go on it like if you would to a party or a bar of course this plane is nothing compare to an a340 the 880 of the 20th century!! this is awesome!!

  • The name "Convair" stood for Consolidated-Vultee Aircraft, a company that would later merge with the Electric Boat Company to form General Dynamics Corporation.

  • Good luck in getting a decent meal on an airliner nowadays.

  • Nice video... That hat @ 0:12 LOL!!

  • To respond to the many quips..."was it better back then?". Yes, in some ways. It's safer now, but as mentioned, flying was way beyond the budget of most individuals and families. Need to console yourself? 1st class is still cheaper in relative cost as coach was back then. Just book 1st, and pretend you're on a really fast L-188 with a huge bus bolted to the back. Market forces, even before the online clearing houses, drove the change. Be careful what you ask for... cheap airfares-help yourself.

  • Superb Airplane well over the competition! in techs in all aspects I think the only flow over the years was the engine but considering the number of re engines Boeing made over the years Convair would made the same and many more 990/880 still would be flying And I know Boeing line Very well!!! Really amaze me wench I visual check pre-flight a 737 with about 5000 cycles the weeping jp1 wings... scary meta junks! The first really good Boeing is the Airbus 300-like 777!!!

  • move over bitch!!!!!!!! Im driving

  • Pure Jet, Pure White, Porcelan White! Gotta love the American south in the about to explode 1960s!!! But oh Wow, look at the food!!!! I would pay the price for that!

  • fantastic clip...thanks so much..the Convair was/is the fastest subsonic passenger jetliner. I believe its' scope was limited by the lower passsenger numbers it could fly compared with its' rivals. As an Aussie who has been flying to and from the USA since 1981, I have seen a huge decline in cabin service, food, staff and passenger dress, courtesy and on time performance. In that time I flew Eastern, North West, Braniff, TWA. Pan Am, PSA..all now gone.

  • My my ..

..is that a charmin', Southern raised flight attendant ?

  • Alright.... is this just for the promo film, or was the in-flight service actually "Better" back then, than it is now?

  • @MEATYOKERRable It was MUCH MUCH better back then. Air fares were also about ten times more than they are now, too. You get what you pay for. Back then, service was excellent, but only the wealthy and businessmen could afford it.

  • Did that jet just backfire?

  • @MEATYOKERRable . I saw that... at 53secs.

  • When I was a kid I flew with my folks on these. Those were certainly the days when flying was a luxury and whether it was by plane or train people "dressed up" to travel this way and we kids were scrubbed and in our best clothes. Today I see some who fly looking like they're street walkers or something and the plane isn't anything more than a human cattle car.

  • @werksdesign That's why I created my channel...a celebration of our childhoods. :-)

  • this was once the glamour of air travel in the U.S. Now, only Asian airlines like Singapore, still provide this form of service. sad how the romance of travel in the u.s has ended, when it was the one who started it.

  • Love the diaper check at 1:32. THUMBS UP!

I'll gladly trade the better meals for today's NON-SMOKING cabins!

  • Convair got it totally wrong with this pony. GE turbojets were thirstier than the JTC3 that the big boys ran, the airframe was too narrow (5 abreast meant less revenue), the engines were also noisier that the JT3C (even under water injection) and basically, Delta had a knack for chosing 'also ran' aircraft so it's fair t say they struggled until the started flying boeings, An interesting clip but really just a historical artifact of how not to build an airliner.

  • Leonard, Leonard........how little you know. Delta was VERY successful, long before they had they're first Boeings in '72. I wouldn't consider the DC-8 an "also ran". I don't know where you think that Delta always chose "also ran" aircraft. They may have taken a little longer, at some times to modernize their fleet, but, they were always a conservative company.

  • I was about 2 ask about that burp!

    - perhaps it swallowed an eagle? i also agree about the smoker. he had a scared look on his face.

  • 1. THANK YOU for posting this.

    2. WHAT!!! Did you see how big the meals used to be??? Modern airlines should be ashamed.

    3. Aside from LOUD cabins and (probably) a lack of general legroom, I think I'd rather fly a Convair.

4 ...and is it just me, or did the female commentator seem disturbingly fixated with all things "white" hahahaha ;)

  • She was emphasizing the white fuselage because prior to the jet age Delta planes generally had polished aluminum fuselages. The white paint was new for the 880 and DC-8.

  • @Ctwofourty at 2:20 the stewardess looks African-American

  • Great vid! And didnt you just LOVE Mrs Thompson's mink stole? Driving in her convertible? Ahhh...the good old days...

  • At 00:49 or 00:50, it's an engine surge when there is a change with air pressure or compression. It's nothing serious thou.

  • I miss the meal service...but not the smug smoking phoney.

  • What was that burp at 00:49
