I know that it might sound a little strange in this context, but as I am designing custom iceboat I need to find out the answer to the question: What is the drag in Newtons of tha ice boat's 3 skids when sailing 60 km/h? Even rough estimation will help me ;) Well it is said that this drag is very low, and hence iceboats are very fast but I need numbers, numbers, numbers! Thanks for any help
Great question - the air flow that provides the push is the true wind, the speed of the boat adds "boat wind" and the combination is the apparant wind which is what provides the " push" or lift - imagine sailiing in 20km of wind at 90deg from true - as the boat speeds up (with min. friction on ice) you're app wind increases and increases, moving forward as well so you're actually creating your own apparant wind and going faster and faster. Works on water too but less exaggerated. cheers
Yes, the season can be very short or not exist! This year we are snowed out with about 16" of snow on the ice. Hopefully it will be better next year. Thanks for your comments.
Thanks for the comment. This year we are snowed out with about 24" on the ground. Ice conditions like on the video don't happen very often. 1cheesehead
I had this totally random dream last night that I was ice boating at a high rate of speed on our lake in upstate NY. I've never done it before, so the first thing I did when I got up the AM was check YouTube knowing there would be plenty of clips, and this is the first clip I saw ... and this is exactly what was in my dream...just rippin' down a smooth lake. I HAVE to try this! P.S. Great video.
cool video, have been out a few times on white bear lake in MN where I grew up, we had a helicopter clocking us and were going from 60-75kts. biggest adrenaline rush ever
It's almost hard to tip them. They have such a wide stance, and only one sail,(no jib,or genny) so it's pretty easy to spill the wind if need be. You can get them up on two runners but, it's a little awkward because you're tipping sideways and forward at the same time. Some are made with two runners forward and only one aft,(steering from the rear) these would be even more stable.
where do you get these?

How fast can you go on these things and how fast are u going here?
foontic23 2 years ago
I was going about 40 mph. The fastest I have gone was close to 100 mph in winds of 25-35mph. Thanks for your comments.

how can it be that an air driven monohull can be by far faster than the air flow that provides the push?cannot figure out..perhaps u r mistaken?

Thanks for the video. I used to iceboat in Maryland but it hasn't been cold enough since 1985. At least I can show people what it was like.

how much is the rent of the ice boat and how much time is it?
mcervantes 3 years ago
I don't know anyone that rents iceboats. If you are lucky some may give rides.

what happens if you fall over?
aporia82 4 years ago
You normally brake parts of the boat and probably git hurt.
1cheesehead 4 years ago
of course. but why doesn't it fall over so often? there's no keel, and i think there's no trapeze either.

Looks like fun. I've never seen this before. Looks like it'd be a blast. I'm guessing it'd hurt to fall off. :] Cool video.
