  • there was an Ikari II arcade game, but it was called "Victory Road"

  • Glad to see you guys are trying to fit alot more game ideas into your videos than you have in the past. Good work. But you forgot Jackal for the NES! Like I said. Keeping you guys in check.

  • @OldsXCool Ha ha yeah, a lot of people have mentioned Jackal and even Dave wondered about it as we made the video. But we decided that there wasn't enough "running" around. If part of the game does have you on foot, then I haven't seen it. We did almost forget Pocky & Rocky.

  • What about Ikari Warriors III?

  • @SPac316 That one is an overhead beat 'em up. Kind of interesting they took that direction with the game.

  • @MrGameSack Well...yeah it was. But if I recall correctly, I think you could grab gun power-ups. But oh well, Good video as always!

  • You guys are truly amazing and devoted. I love to see a new episode every week, it's always an awesome way to discover new games and have a nostalgic moment. Greetings from Canada. Keep up your amazing work

  • this is my first time seeing this show and i enjoyed it keep up the good work

  • I'd love to see room tours in a future episode.

  • Nice episode. One overhead run and gun I really liked that not a lot of people know about is Medal of Honor Infiltrator for the GBA.

  • Is there any way to get Shock Troopers 2nd squad to a younger generation of consoles? I mean, an official version, no illegal stuff.

  • Gain Ground is the only overhead Run 'n Gun game that comes to mind that got missed here... it doesn't scroll, but I think it tends to involve the running part much more than any other game in the genre.

  • just a small suggesting for a future show. can you do a review/voice-over commentary of old-school Master-system, genesis, nes, super nes, TG-16 commercials ?

  • @tolust ...and/or Video Game magazines, Gamepro, Nintendo Power, Gameplayers, Sega Vistions, EGM, etc.

  • another incredible show !!! Thank you guys for everything you do ! .. Just wish you would release 2x episodes per week ;)

  • @tolust Are you trying to kill us? :)

  • @MrGameSack YES ! if that's what it would take do it !! you guys just became my #1 show on youtube, better then AVGN, Pat the nes punk, Screwattack, etc. ..you guys have more talent, fair knowledge of the old systems and more entertaining then any of the shows...did I mention how much love the shirt "Genesis does what Nintendon't" ?!?! That kicks ass.

  • @tolust We would have to be paid to do it twice a week. We have mortgages and cars and stuff that require a paying job. :(

  • Great episode guys. The bullets at 14:42 reminds me of Contra.

  • You guys are funny. Keep it up-- I would hate to have to stop chortling like an idiot caveman.

  • @katiecrimespree Thanks! chortle away and be happy.

  • finally... some shock troopers love... that was definitely the only neo geo game that had me going back to the same pizza shop that had it to spend my allowance ($5 a week) to beat the damn thing. quite an amazing game for sure...

  • @dups1822 and some good memories also.

  • Overlooked? Isn't it called Underlooked for an underrated game?

Overlooked means overrated to me which means not as good as the people say it is.

  • @wrestletube1

    OVERLOOK

    1. to fail to notice, perceive, or consider: to overlook a misspelled word.

    :)

  • Aw man, no Time Soldiers arcade? Still.. Excellent, thorough video as always! :)

  • @austinmackert maybe Time Soldiers next time around. Thanks for checking us out.

  • I love the games you cover in your shows. I never knew about the shock troopers games before. Thanks for making such awesome videos. I love your humor as well.

  • I actually thought Mercs on the Master System was a small game that wasn't well known. I had a lot of fun with that one as a kid. Big kudos for the inclusion of Ninja (Master System) and Total Carnage but I have to admit that I'm surprised you didn't include a nod towards the father of the genre, Robotron 2084. I guess it only partially qualifies but Cannon Fodder is one of the best - if only for the awesome introduction video and song. Also, you guys forgot Chaos Engine! Great show as always!

  • @WskOsc Agree with Cannon Fodder. But that originated on the AMIGA though and it's best on AMIGA.

Not many people in America had the opportunity to play that great disk based system because they still used and probably outdated here in the UK back then Commodore predecessor the also great for an 8-Bit C64 which used NES graphics and the older Husband of the AMIGA's Paula chip called the SID Chip.

  • No Jackal for the NES?? Nice to see guerrilla war right at the end.

  • @danger1337 See the criteria required in the description for games to meet in order to be included.

  • I just noticed how ignorant I was of the genre. Many of those games on 8- and 16-bit-systems I never tried, but this episode put me in the mood to do so now.

Too bad you did not show the awesome 2600-version of Ikari! :D

BTW, I don´t think the graphic elements of Shock Troopers 2 are "digitized". Digitized would mean filmed actors (or objects) like Mortal Kombat, but this is pre-rendered; rendering 3D models on advanced hardware and grabbing sprites off those. Like Donkey Kong country.

  • @108Stars Yeah, like Donkey Kong Country. That's what we said. :)

  • @108Stars You're right! pre rendered is the word we needed. Neither of us own an Atari. I can't believe there was a 2600 version. Maybe a 7200 but not a 2600

  • @tetrisdave Hey Dave! There really was a 2600-version released in 1989. Not sure if it came out in the US, maybe it was for Europe only, because the 2600 was still sold here as a low-budget console for younger kids, and for that reason new games were made as well. Beside Ikari there was also Double Dragon and Ghostbusters II. You can see the 2600-version of Ikari on Youtube (search Ikari 2600)

Of course it is very limited, but rather well done regarding the hardware I think. :)

  • you guys have come a long way from your first episode and you keep getting better and better nice vids

  • @gamingon24444 Thanks! Hopefully a year from now we will be even better..

  • I THUMBED YOU DOWN, OH YEAH!

  • @ThumbdownMan Thanks! I thumbed you down, too. We're like... twins!

  • @ThumbdownMan Now we are triplets! You're right, giving thumbs down is fun. :)

  • Weird choice for an episode, but I still loved it

Also, weird you didn't talk about Blaster master, since that's the most heard Overhead Run n'Guns

That's it,Hope you had a good Weekend and a great week over the course of this one! Thanks again for the episode!

  • @Heroelime Thanks! Blaster Master almost made the cut for the games to be talked about but we decided to put it in the montage.

  • There's also Heavy Barrel, and Guerrilla War! Quarter munchers!

  • Loved Gun.smoke, but only the NES version. The arcade version *is* too difficult, as you'd expect from a coin-op. The home version is more balanced and very addictive, and the music is superb. Also re: Shock Troopers - awesome soundtrack, I'd like to see more drum and bass music in shooters. I'm fond of Total Carnage too (sort of a sequel to Smash TV) but it's insane unless you have unlimited continues. Great channel, subscribed.

  • @csanderson7850 Thanks. I agree that the home verstion of Gun.Smoke is the best even though it's missing a few levels from the arcade. It's at least playable and not completely frustrating.

  • What was that flashing yellow light on the bookshelf in the back? BTW my brother and I beat Ikari Warriors 2 with the code. We thought it was like an overhead version of Contra.

  • @Zeldaschampion That was the reflection of a candle Dave lit.

  • Excellent work as always guys; When I saw this in my sub box, I made some snacks, got a drink, and fired up the Xbox Youtube app so I could chill out and watch this on my couch.

This is easily one of the best shows on Youtube.

There's a few games in there I wouldn't mind doing an LP of, but I suck really badly at Run'n'Gun games, so it may be fairly short lived if I do...

  • @RBG4Play Thanks! That's a great routine. Nothing beats a drink, snacks and good internet shows.

You should try the LP. If it doesn't work then ditch it or try again. That's the fun part.

  • Dungeon Explorer for the Nintendo DS was awesome too

  • GAME SACKERS! Show some GUTS! You can`t escape Victory Road! Come review it if you can! Wa ha ha ha HA!~

  • @WaffleKogen Search Victory Road SNK here if you want to get creeped out today

  • I had a very good neo geo aes overhead scrolling shooter, time commando, really good fun.

  • Nice episode guys! GameSack is the best show on youtube!

My favorite Run N Gun game back in the day was Guerilla War for the NES,I've played and beaten that game almost every day and never got bored of it.The game was hard but thank god for the unlimited continues lol.

  • @TemplarZK Thanks for the compliment! I like Guerilla War. I'm happy SNK put a lot of effort into the NES back in the day.

  • Ikari Warriors 2 is a port of SNK's arcade game Victory Road... and you didn't cover Ikari Warriors 3: The Rescue! ;_;

  • @CollisionCat Oh well.

  • @MrGameSack

    N-no, my life is ruined! ;_______;

  • @MrGameSack Yes indeed, Ikari Warriors II was definitely a port of an arcade game, though the arcade version did not have the "Ikari Warriors" moniker in its title. I disagree with you guys partially on the game as well. I do agree that the game is insanely difficult, but I love the weirdness of the graphics and the enemy design. The game definitely stands out to me among games I played as a kid because of how weird the levels and enemies were, and also for the occasional voice samples.

  • @CollisionCat Interesting tidbit about Victory Road. Ikari 3 is a beat em up. All the enemies do ballet in that game.

  • @tetrisdave

Hey, thanks Dave! I guess that's why you guys didn't cover the third game? Fair enough!

  • "Gun Dot Smoke" - Silly Grin and Point. LMFAO.

  • @willywillyson Thanks. Why is that dot in there??? Somebody at Capcom must know.

  • no contra

  • @musthemc look again. In the montage

  • One reason to love the mondays... There's always a episode of Game Sack

  • @cuklg It's the highlight of Mondays for me XD

  • @cubefreak123 Thanks for watching.

  • @cuklg Yes. We are Monday's must see TV. Thanks!!

  • Not bad coverage joe on overhead run'n'guns though (ikari warriors victory road) was an arcade game as well.Still the nes port was terrible to begin with.By the way thumbs up for mentioning shock troopers one of my all time favorites on the neo-geo mvs,it's even on the psn as well. Also i can't stand it's sequel 2nd squad it's not as good as the original.

  • I could of sworn Rambo III was going to make the review portion! Sick arranged version of Rambo (the one with Zane) fir the SMS! Where's jackal! Great ep fellas.

  • @MikeGartner

Ah Mikey, Rambo III is one sick game! I borrowed this game from the neighbour and did not want to give it back! After 2 weeks of playing it I begrudgingly has to give it back! If memory serves me right, after each stage you got to fire a bow and arrow at a boss! I think there was a helicopter boss and a tank! Do you have the game?

  • Another great video guys they just keep getting better and better.

  • This episode was AWESOME. Such a great genre.

Shock Troopers is possibly the best top down run n' gun ever made... well, in my opinion at least. And for anyone who has a PS3, you owe it to yourself to pick up the Neo Geo Station version on PSN. Hell, it's on sale for $4.49!!! What are you waiting for!?

  • @wip3outguy7 I will look into that sale. I hope it's not too late!

  • @tetrisdave Unfortunately, the sale ended on Tuesday. Although, Shock Troopers is still more than worth the "full" $8 PSN price.

  • awesome games you guys picked, but if you have not checkedit out Ninja Commando on the Neo Geo is a awesome top down game, its also on the Wii Virtual Console

  • @78StriderStrikesBack I wish the Wii VC would have a sale. I would buy Ninja Commando.

  • Hey Joe, I love my Mercs and I'm embarrassed to say I have never heard of Mercs on the Saturn.

Was this a collection disc or a dedicated release? I also tried to find anything on a Saturn version, but nothing,.. So what's the story?

  • @TheGreenMonkeyKing It was on those Capcom Generations discs released in Japan, number 4. It has Commando, Mercs and Gun.Smoke. The same thing was released for the Playstation and they may have even been released in the US for that system, not entirely sure. Anyway the game can be played horizontally or vertically (requiring you to tip your TV).

  • Comment removed

  • i never knew ikari warriors 2 was nes only. i remember playing 3 in the arcades which i thought looked awesome...for its time

  • @crapperstick Yeah, surprisingly that one was a beat 'em up. Very odd.

  • @MrGameSack i remember how in the first level your in the water and could do a spin kick

  • So next video is a collection video?! :D

  • Nice vid guys, always love your work. But I feel like I've heard the song where all the other games were being presented. I'm trying to find it right now since it's so awesome.

  • @Stick162 Its an arranged version of Rambo: First Blood Part II on the Sega Master System. It's called We Fight For Friends. This was from an album called SEGAROCKS if I recall correctly.

  • shooters whether top town or side scrolling are all awesome.

  • If you buy stuff with your score, I guess you are getting it for free.

  • @shaurz No! It's my score and I want to keep it. I killed the Wingates and I should be a hero..

  • A.B.B.A :Snk Konami code. Lol

  • Last Alert! People will hate you, Steve, if you're too sting-ee! Haha great episode as always. love the delivery.

  • @DeviousDave Thank You! Bad voice acting is so fun to listen to.

  • Great episode. You guys put alot of work in this. And love the awesome music selection you put in. I love the rocking Rambo2 sega mastersystem remix especially. Add to the fact that you guys don't use the F word every second like all the AVGN clones, puts you as my favorite retro videogame review channel.

  • @GooseHinson Thanks for that! Cussing is over rated and really isn't the image we want. It's hard to take someone seriously if all they do is drop f bombs and such.

  • You guys are great, keep up the good work. Can't wait till next episode.

  • No Jackal, Guardian Legend or DIE HARD! HOW COULD YOU FORGET DIE HARD FOR THE NES! Hahahahaha great episode though.

  • Man so many overhead run 'n gunners! So many I need! Can I have your uber expensive Twinkle Tale, Joe?

  • @TheMathius78 That one belongs to Dave, actually.

  • @MrGameSack Dave huh? Come on, Dave!

  • @TheMathius78 Twinkle Tale is a great place to start with run 'n guns. You can't have mine I'm sorry..... :(

  • @tetrisdave A place to start??? You're talking to the run n' gun king! =) Well, "king" might be taking it a little too far. I have a lot of these with a few exceptions. If I just got Twinkle Tale and Shock Troopers for my AES I'd be happy.

  • @TheMathius78 Ok. Well Twinkle Tale is a good place to finish then. Oh and you still can't have mine.

  • Awesome episode guys, and I know you said you can't show everything, but I'm shocked you guys did not show the classic Jackal on the NES, cause even though it has a Jeep, and not a guy on foot, it plays just like a run n' gun game, and made me feel like a total badass as a kid when i finally beat it.

  • @clays121 We did discuss including Jackal but felt it was more like Firepower 2000.

  • The guy below him is batman

  • The guy below me is Batman and the statement above is false.

  • Give this a like before I even watch :)
