can i ask approximately how long this took to do? im planning on just running water through there until it looks ok and then using some CLR to get the deep in shit.
thanks for the video ! i`m going to use CLR for my radiator flushh next time , it really looks like it works ! . but , one question . . is it okay just to use CLR by itself to flush , or is it safer to have CLR + water ?? . . because in my `97 Expedition . . i don`t have the radiator cap , just the coolant overflow reservoir . . so ? wat do yu recommend . . ?
@FaaumuPride Dont use the CLR by its self. After you pour the clr into the rad then top it off with water. Run the engine up to temp then drain. Repeat if needed.
I was wondering, after you added the CLR did you end up running the engine for another ten minutes at normal running temperature with the heater on and the CLR circulating into the engine? Or did you just add the CLR to the radiator and let it sit in there and then flush it out? Thanks
nice vid,...! I heard the black water comes from people having mixed Dex-cool coolant (the red stuff) with other type coolants,... I myself didn't know there was more than 1 type, but my brothers water looks like this so I'm researching ways o flush out his system,... I think people over the years of a cars life just pour shit in there no matter what it is, just as long as it says anti-freeze on the bottle,... and that can cause a problem,....
Did you part the CLR with water? Or did you just put the whole bottle of CLR in there and let it run for awhile? I'm flushing my cooling system right now in a '92 XL and about to get some CLR, it's still dirty as hell after 4 cycles of just water.
Sweet funnel, just be sure to wash it out real good before you beer bong with it again. Glycol in your coolant is BAD for you. lol
I have never had much luck with that prestone stuff either. If you have a NAPA store nearby, I suggest NAPA Cool. I flushed out an old escort with sludge in the radiator about a year ago. I recently worked on that car for a different concern in which I had to drain the coolant and it looked almost new.
@jlsparky7, i like your funnel, lol, thanks for commenting back, i appreciate your vid 5*****, however there is a few ways to do a flush and i wish i knew a ford service tech to find out the right way. have you heard of engine coolant drain plugs, according to my ford (factory) manual ( it sucks), there are some drain plugs somewhere, and it also says to take out the thermostat, but it doesnt say why. argh!! do you know anything about this?
@therockkkkher No prob man. The drain plug for the radiator is on the bottom and its usually a plastic wing nut that you can under with your fingers. It works great if the vehicle has been regularly maintained. However because this vehicle is 15 years old and never had a rad flush theres a good chance there is large debris in the rad/engine. The hole for the regular rad drain is only about the size of a pencil. So i used this method just to minimized the chance of leaving debris.
@therockkkkher As for the thermostat it was replaced it one of my other videos before I did the flush. Its basically a spring valve the prevents the coolant from circulating through the radiator until the engine is up to operating temp. It helps the tolerances of the engine stay tight and almost makes the vehicle warm up faster.
Im a single mom and Im having to have mine flushed. This guy said he will do it but it would cost me $300 bucks. Is there a way I can do it myself or would I have to have help?....
@yooshiebaby Im guessing the odds are slim that you live in southeastern michigan. I would do it for free if you did.
Anyways $300 is a pretty steep price. $100 would be about average around here, depending on the vehicle and how busy the shop was. Keep shopping around.
No. Im from Texas and the guy was charging me 39.99 for an oxygen sensor and 39.99 for fluids to flush my radiator, but he was charging over 220+ in labor alone. You make it look easy in your video though, that's why I asked.
dude... ur the man, im a tech myself... and you explained this diy very well for the rookies. I wrk flat rate man and in a dealer i cant do 6 flushes.... in a car, customer is lucky if he gets one with extra water, then fill with coolant. On my car though, i would def. do 10 flushes if i had to, like you did... 5 stars
I would add that you can flush forward and backwards via the heater core lines. Being that a heater core is annoying to change. Granted you need to have some way of collecting what you flush. However it makes a great difference. I actually noticed that my Exp idles lower, temps are perfect. Just my opinion. That coolant was nasty.
Ive never flushed via the heater core lines before. Maybe if I end up doing it I will shoot a vid of it. I think im gunna flush the coolant one more time before I put some serious miles on the EX.
I used 1/2 one of the smaller CLR bottles. You only need 1 ounce per gallon I believe. Just eyeball it, its not that big of a deal if you add too much.
I wonder using the CLR on the first flush would of done the trick. Good tip. Im flushing my truck out this weekend. Probably flush out my sysem with a couple beers. Thanks for the vid.
Thanks so much for your effort in posting these video tutorials. I am very new to the automotive maintenance thing, and a video is worth a thousand pictures, or a million words, for that matter.
No problem man! Anything I can do to help. Today Im probably going to be doing a lift on the explorer, front torsion twist and rear shackles. Should be fun.
After getting stuck in the snow every time there is more than 2 inches with my 1 wheel drive ranger ill shell out the extra couple bucks in gas money for AWD. This explorer wont be my daily driver just my up north machine.
Ok so quick question how do you mix the clr and water or how do you put it in there i couldnt quite make sense of it

And why is it that u didn't plug a hose and let the water clean your system? Is that wrong? I am asking because I need to do this same work myself :)
Gontzzo 2 years ago
@Gontzzo There are many different ways to clean the system out. This is the method I prefer.
jlsparky7 2 years ago
u skip an step you should have let clean water run through it before dump radiator cleaner in it..

how do you get all the old coolant out of the engine/lines after you drain all the coolant out of the rad?
00freightshaker 2 years ago
The solution to pollution is dilution. By flushing with water after you run the cleaner through it gets almost all the old stuff out.

Our systems needs to be flushed with a few brews here and there. :-)
