Very nice performance, but if you ever play this piece again, maybe try playing it a little slower? Just some kind advice. Although this was an outstanding performance!
Bravo!! Thank you for a wonderful performance, and from a Civic Orchestra! What a pleasant surprise. Kudos to your percussion section, particularly your timpanist.
Every time I listen to this piece I hear something new. Respighi even captured the sound of mosquitoes buzzing in the dawn twilight. ( f rom about :20 to :50 or so). Listen for the slightly discordant buzz of wings in the background.
The sun is just coming up; the carts and wagons of the farmers are leaving the city and returning to the latifundia; tramping up the road and into the city come the lead cohorts of the legion; behind them , all the way from Rome to Capua, hang the 6000 survivors of Sparticus' slave army, slowly dieing on their crosses as the triumphant legion of Crassus enters the city and ascends the Capitoline. The Servile War is over! Ave Imperator!
I can be perfectly fine before listening to this piece- but every time I find tears washing my face at the end. I'm swept away in it's emotional intensity- and Conductor Chung, you were absolutely brilliant and able to bring out the best in this composition. BRAVO!!
@clarinetto8: there is. I agree, it would be nice for it to be more prominent. We don't have a "real" organ in our otherwise beautiful facility. Hopefully someday soon! Thanks for watching!
Ahh... I did this in my high school band when I was young... such a beautiful rendition. Thank you for giving me a fresh memory of such a beautiful piece.
Other than the fact that the tempo is WAY too fast (those soldiers were marching, not double-timing!), this is a very good perfromance. Bright and blazing. And I LOVE the fact that the earliest trumpet tattoos were not muted (I hate when this is done!). :)
Close your eyes, disregard the pedigree of the orchestra and you could be almost be listening to one of the big 5. This finale of course is all about dynamics and (hopefully) the string section not being overpowered by the brass. Here the microphones were places perfectly for a good optimal balance unlike some other Pines of Rome recordings on YouTube.
Thanks for watching and for your comment!
