  • if you cant afford to pay a living wage, you shouldnt be in business

  • If minimum wage is so great, why not just raise it to $200/hr?! Wouldn't it be great!?.. Can all of you here saying minimum wage is great explain to me what's wrong with this logic?

  • Aside from that, what would Beck know about minimum wage? Because his dad reaped profits from a successful bakery, on the backs of minimum wage workers, we're supposed to feel like this multi-millionaire mouthpiece is an authority on what it's like to live on next to nothing?

  • Apparently Glen doesn't know the difference between a 23.7% increase and a 31% increase. 6.75-5.15/6.75*100=23.7%

What a sensationist blowhard. No wonder he got kicked off the air. He flat out makes up statistics, hoping people are too busy stupidly nodding their heads, to actually fact check.

  • @Syne111 you are aware that (6.75-5.15)/5.15 is .3106 or 31% right? Because you did pass middle school math and you realize that a wage increase is (current-former)/FORMER right? Or are you maybe just a moron?

  • I've been listening to the left for years. I must say the left is wrong. I never listen to Glenn Beck. But what he's saying is right. What america needs right now is small business owners to employ. And min wage do hurt small business owners. I think we should let the free market take care of the min wage. The worst thing that could happen is very cheap labor for low pay. But then unions would have a come back in america. And we all know companies hate unions. So let's get rid of the min wage.

  • @jaybb789 I 100% agree with your last comment. your so confused you accidentally agreed with me. nice.

  • @clairishe

The minimum wage helps a lot of people. Whether they are more than are hurt is not easy to determine. The fact is, that not productivity, but supply & demand explains lot of the wages. If you have excess supply in unskilled labor, wages will go down sharply. Therefore, it is likely that a reasonable minimum wage actually increases overall wage payments, hence distributes income from the top to the workers. The increased spending could even make up for the employment losses.

  • @jaybb789 i was referring to sweat shops in all places. forced labor is slavery and is a seperate issue from sweat shops entirely. if someone builds a sweat shop and people willingly work there get the government out of there.

  • @jaybb789 was it even an american company or was it one of china's? i bet you don't even know. figure it out and get back to me

  • Only 8% of min wage workers support a family BECAUSE THEY ONLY HAVE MINIMUM WAGE. It's not some how magically the other way around Glen Beck.

  • @jaybb789 I am unemployed. ironic huh? maybe if you didn't blindly assume you knew shit maybe you'd realize your wrong sometimes. about my employment and about the minimum wage myth. do your retarded ass a favor and in the search bar type in "Milton Friedman Minimum Wage Myth" and get yourself just a little smarter. thanks.

  • @jaybb789 It's pretty funny that willzyx1980 won't address what you have said about the unemployed, the numbers on unemployment and food stamps. In addition if everyone is doing so well as he claims why are foreclosurers still continuing at alarming rates? He won't address any of those issues because they contradict the nonsense he is putting out. He is either a paid troll/mouthpeice or one of those thick headed sorts who can't understand anything until it affects them personally.

  • @jaybb789 I don't know whether you're illiterate or just don't understand statistics, but the report says the income SHARE of the poor is shrinking. That is completely different from claiming that the poor are getting poorer, which the report points out is actually untrue. I've already said this earlier, and the report states it clearly, so if you keep repeating your nonsense I just have to assume that you're either a troll or just stupid. Either way you aren't worth any more of my time.

  • @jaybb789 Wow what a great argument. "The facts don't match my prejudices so I'll just posit a corporate/government conspiracy." LOL you are such a joke.

  • @jaybb789 Wouldn't it be great if there was a way to see which of us is right? (Whether the bottom quintile has been getting richer or poorer over the past 30 years.) Oh wait, there is. There is plenty of data on this subject. I've looked at it; why haven't you? Are you afraid to be proven wrong? Afraid your pathetic anti-capitalist world view will come crashing down? Look at the census data (or just Google "mcgraw hill news flash re-thinking inequality trends") and educate yourself.

  • @jaybb789 That is incorrect. Over the last 30 years all five income quintiles have increased in wealth. The difference between the highest income quintile and the lowest has increased, but this is because the highest has gotten wealthier faster, not because the lowest has gotten poorer; it hasn't. Your "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer" story is factually wrong. There is simply no transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich; the poor have been getting richer. Look it up.

  • Too many fucking economic illiterates in the comment section

  • @dougman5000 there's no real enforcement of this anyway, though. under-the-table paid jobs continue anyway, since it continues to be profitable to employ people at X dollars < minimum wage, and there continue to be people who need those jobs to survive; these days a lot of "interns" floating around these days and a lot of "volunteers" who really don't have a choice about it... they all need a few months experience on their resumes just to file papers or flip burgers. I think that's worse.

  • Small bussiness would grow rapidly if huge multi-national companies, such as mcdonals, didnt not HOG the market, providing cheap "food" and UNDERCUTTING local small bussiness. Your argument is about job creation, but the fact is that the rise in multinational companies over the past 30 - 40years has seen a decline in jobs in the tertiary (retail) sector due to, oh my god, LESS COMPETITION! Bring back Mechanical Solidarity, its much more humane.

  • Many business claims that they are hurting financially, but the cost of their products and services cover more than the profits.

  • I like how these conservatives try and talk about small business. Hardcore capitalism kills small businesses.

  • When did Beck start bearing glasses? Did he have a nasty accident? If so I definitely need the youtube link.

  • The rich are not getting richer while the poor are getting poorer. The rich have gotten richer...but so have the poor. True, the rich have had a larger increase than the poor. But it is blatantly false and dishonest to say the poor are getting poorer. Economics is not a zero-sum game; everyone gains.

You can argue about the political or moral merits of the minimum wage, but you cannot argue against its economic implications. The minimum wage hurts the working poor.

  • @aleftynamedtony You can't live off $7 an hour, so how could you live on less?

  • Perhaps Glenn "greedy" Beck should live on minimum wage

  • This is such bullshit.

  • if we have minimum wage, we should have minimum grade in schools! that way no one has to work to get a better grade! oh yay! or we could average all the grades in a class and give everyone that grade! that way we're all equal! so if you work hard and get an A, it doesnt matter!

  • @bgsdfhugvufbgv We have a minimum grade. It's called F.

  • This has been sooo disproved... economic theory ≠ economic reality sometimes. Sorry Beck.

  • When I graduated High School in '75 the minimum wage was $1.65 per hour. Figuring for inflation that would be about $14.00 per hour in 2010. Now even proponents of a "Living Wage" don't ask for that much per hour. Yes, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Most of the people who whine about raising the minimum wage make triple the current minimum wage. Something to think about as the gap between "rich" and "poor" widens annually...

  • @randy95023 I complained about it at the time. I was a teenager working a fast food restaurant. I am currently a college student who makes ~ $14 an hour depending on how much I work for that current month when I coop, and I am still against the minimum wage.

  • @randy95023 Oh and in 1975 we had 11% inflation. You want that too?

  • @randy95023 What the hell kind of inflation calculator did you use to calculate that?

  • @randy95023

"The poor get poorer"? Are you kidding or are you really that ignorant?

  • @randy95023: The so-called "cost of living" is a fabricated entity which depends on the people's money and living standards, not the other way around. Businesses can't afford to not pay people enough to buy their products. You wanna know why the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer? Because the poor can't get jobs anymore.

The poor can't get jobs so the govt. pays for them to "live" so they can buy stuff from the rich so the govt. can collect and waste more taxes.

  • @randy95023 The question isn't for you to answer. It's between the employer & the worker

90% of the working in America gets paid MORE than minimum wage. Why do you think that is? Is it coz the employer feels guilty or is it coz the employer values the worker more?

Even a simpleton can predict whether employment will go up or down if we set it at your rate of $14/hr

Or why even stop at $14, lets set it at a million, so we can all be rich and there won't be any gap. Except we all will be poor.

  • You're absolutely correct on your last point. Income disparity between the elite and the poor is larger than its ever been in US history. This is happening NOT because of a lack of government oversight, but rather because government protects corporate interests.

However, you're wrong about the min wage; watch?v=7DS0XXFdyfI&feature=related

  • In "Fast Food" payroll accounts for about 28% of cost. Therefore you could raise wages by 10% and it would increase end product cost by 2.8%. Pay an extra nickel for that burger and fries and be happy that the kid behind the counter got a 10% pay increase. I'm for it and remember that the restaurant worker will spend that money right back into our economy which will help the other businesses in your community. We CAN afford to pay a dignified wage. Respect Labor!

  • but what's the value in giving teenagers higher wages? According to Dept of Labor, half of all min wage workers are under 25, i.e. they're students. About a quarter (estimate) are believed to be illegal immigrants. The remaining are a combination of supplemental income earners and yes, the very few Americans who support themselves on min wage. Does it make sense to raises prices for everyone so students can have higher wages?

  • What's the minimum wage for Texas now and days. I'm thinking about moving there.I have two kids to support and I live in New Jersey. I work at Wal - Mart now but I really need to know.

  • Yeah sure let the market dictate wages. Like during the 19th Century.

The effect of the labour movement has had as much to do with employee expectations over conditions as the free market.

  • why don't you move to Zimbabwe? I heard the government pays their citizens well there.

  • why don't you go work in a sweat shop in Malaysia?

  • @rdor011 In You make many incorrect assumptions. Your line of thinking goes something along the lines of, "During the eve of the industrial revolution most farm workers lived comfortable lives working on the fields before retiring to their cottages with their families. Those few industrial workers in the city lived in similar conditions with a few more services and it being a little more crowded." Then the big bad industrial revolution came and everyones wages were slashed and burned

  • @rdor011 and the average standard of living fell sharply." Nothing is further from the truth. Living conditions were more deplorable before the industrial revolution when most people were subsistence farmers. I can give you facts and figures if you want them, but it really isn't necessary because if living conditions were better on the farms than no one would be working in the factories.

  • They are not raising minimum wage... they are adjusting for inflation. $5.15/hr in 1997 with inflation is $8/hr in 2009. So we need to raise for inflation.

  • In 1997, making $5.15/hr BEFORE TAXES, you cannot even afford a one-bedroom apartment anywhere in AMERICA. You will be homeless, and among the "working-poor". And have to work 2 and 3-jobs to make ends meet. Goodbye to all your leisure-time, goodbye to sleep. The is what republicans want to perpetuate.

  • Why should we have a min wage to begin with? i mean what is the advantage of having a min wage to lower income workers?

  • if everyone in the economy was employed due to low wages, less crime will occur, productivity goes up,and guess what,!!prices of goods goes down!!

  • No you shmoe look at history, look at all the shante towns that existed in america's last gildid age.If your not making enuff money to support yourself from the job you'll steal/rob to make up the difference. If republicans were really worried about "job growth" they'd regulate inflated CEO's salaries/bonus's.Over compensation of a CEO is stunting job growth as well.1980 the top 1% had 8% of the countries wealth... Now they have 21%. And thats been during a 30 year wage freeze & tax breaks.OWNED.

  • So your idea for job growth is that govt should impliment a min wage and a max wage?

  • i rather stea (and have) than work for a low wage

  • Bullshit.... The only thing that min wage does is to bring other wages down to the same level... oh and feed the bonuses of the other fat cat greedy bastards.

  • Thats 100% wrong ALL wages goes up when the min wage goes up because other jobs that werent minimum wage jobs raise their wages to stay at a higher status. and 2 what fat cat's are getting bonus's for paying more? and if you mean senators or congressmen you obviously have NO idea how congress works. they get high paying jobs when they leave office and go work in an industry that they helped make a lot of money for when they were in office. Congressmen are 2 slick 4 str8 cash bribes. FOOL.

  • Well how does Min Wage actually help in your view?

  • the minimum hour wage in job fields in Denmark is about +/-100kr (~20US$)

the unemployment rate is about 5% and apparently DK has one of the highest job activity among teenagers.

I don't really have a point, but i guess you don't have to fear the collapse of the USA just by rising the minimum wages.

  • The prices for goods is incredible, and the government takes a ton of there money.

I guess that is the trade off not mentioned

rise in wages either raises the prices or destroys the job market. They choose prices because of laws there tax the goods to death anyway.

  • Denmarks standard of living is much higher than ours you asswipe.

  • Adjusted for inflation minimum wage peaked at 9.74 in 1967. Go ahead, whoever posted that video, adjust that for economic growth.

  • Glenn you are facist, the minimum wage was set at this level in 1997, how much has the economy grown in those ten years? The minimum wage should grow at least the amount % wise.

  • P.T., you are a fascist. There should never have been a minimum wage. Wages should be determined by employees and employers... and no one else. Government should never have been involved in setting wages in the first place. Any involvement in setting wages by government (or condoning such narcissistic, power-grabbing) is Fascism.

  • OMG! Glenn Beck finally gets something right! Although it is sad to see that he understands this concept and understands the concept that the american dollar is crashing, that is to say that the american dollar is losing value yearly, and yet he still cannot understand that the Federal Reserve leads to the need for americans to want to be paid more. Bring the value of the dollar up and Americans will no longer need a min wage.

  • never has it hurt job growth NEVER

  • Never has an arbitrary minimum wage law hurt job growth? Are you lying or just ignorant? If the government mandates that wages be paid higher than an individual's productivity warrants, how can that wage be paid? Such arbitrary laws are unsustainable and discriminatory.

  • If only 5% of the workforce makes min wage, and the national wage avg. is $16, and the libs gave you only $7.25, they didnt give you half of the national avg. Wake up libs, the democrates dont love you. YOU GOT SCREWED, HA

  • Liberals are mostly economically ignorant on this subject and their arguments are logically backward. The more power you give government to manage business in the economy, the more problems you will create.

    Glennn is right.

  • Hey, lets just eliminate the minimium wage and create a society of subservant lower class. That way the rich can hire more cheap labor people which makes them even richer. Just like in China. This guy is nothing more than a corporate mouthpiece.

  • @padraicbg I agree. We should eliminate the minimum wage and create more jobs. I agree with Friedman when he says that the minimum wage more accurately says that it is illegal to hire a person with low skills. (BTW I worked for minimum wage 3 years ago and I'm doing around 14 cooping) If you don't like it than become more skilled.

  • @padraicbg every job is voluntary. if you really can't find a job then make yourself one. if you can't do that then give up on life and quit bitching to the rest of us.

  • @padraicbg you know those people china actually like those "sweat shops"? why don't you stop being a snobby american your making the rest of us look bad.

  • @padraicbg Beck may very well be a corporate mouthpiece, but on this issue he's actually correct. Minimum wage is one of the biggest causes of unemployment there is. The minimum wage helps some people at the expense of a large number of other people. Walter E. Williams says it best: watch?v=7DS0XXFdyfI&feature=related

  • Liberals just don't understand the basic economics of why raising minimum wage doesn't help anyone!

  • Watch a vid of someone who is infavor of increasing the minimum wage...both sides right?

  • And Vidman, in regards to raising the minimum wage taking away incentives to "to work hard/study/get a good job" do you honestly believe a person is going to want to stay working in a shit minimum wage job just because he can get a decent wage?

  • There are many reasons why it can help as well. For example: Workers work harder when they feel they are getting a fair wage, also workers eat healthier and have more money for drugs(leagal ones). I don't think I need to mention the single mothers who have to live in near poverty and work 2 jobs because they can't make ends meet. Beck, as usaul, is right about half the story but refuses to mention the other side.

  • XarxesB- "I don't think I need to mention the single mothers who have to live in near poverty and work 2 jobs because they can't make ends meet."

I lived in Eastern Kentucky growing up- one of the poorest and uneducated areas in the U.S.- and knew very few single mothers that worked. They all just sat back and drew welfare. That's where the 8% GB talks about comes in.

  • Sure, you all make great points about not increasing the minimum wage. But is there no one among you who would speak for those who actually have to live off this shit wage? Beck mentions teenagers having the most minimum wage jobs with the assumption that they are just spending the money on junk (or worse). But what about those who are saving to put themselves through school so they can actually receive decent pay in the future? More...

  • Not so much... if you increase minimum wage, inflation will soon follow. Giving lower class workers more money will only be a temporary fix, the value of the dollars that they are recieving will decrease. Thus, it is not the be all, end all, life saver that pro-increase supporters believe.

  • I agree. But the sad truth is that someone has to do the minimum wage jobs and they have to be at very low pay or else there would be no incentive to work hard/study/get a good job. An increase is good in that there are people who can't live well off of minimum wage, but they also realize they dug themselves into that hole they're in.

  • Brshelton, you may be right about welfare in Kentucky, but we are not talking about welfare, we are talking about people who do work. Perhaps if they felt they could receive a decent wage there would be more incentive to work instead of just soaking up freebees?

  • rising mininum wage my ass. i got an ideal stay in school and get a better job!

  • And what if you're in school and don't have mommy or daddy to pay all your expenses for you, so you have to work to live?
