Please correct me if I'm wrong but didn't medival japan adapt quite alot from the chinese? Including (but not limited to) the written language aka kanji since they only gradually began to develope their own written language (hiragana and katakana) during the heian period.
I think they also built their capital in refence to the chinese imperial capital. So it would not surprise me if they adopted cultural features including the music.
